I would have posted about chapter 85 yesterday, but this it's the kind of thing where you want to have a translation.

[spoiler]Arguably Wrath survived the bombing, though I wonder if he saw it coming and let it happen. Sabotage would be a good excuse for him to disappear and (in?)conveniently return later on when it suited him.

[spoiler]It's the eyes that make the scene for me. Notably, this is the first time the armor has ever had anything but darkness in the eye holes. This leads me to ponder what it would be like if Al returned... in the armor. That'd be a cool plot twist.

Arakawa-san does a great job pleasing most shoujo and shonen manga oriented fans. Shoujo for the hetero pairing shipping. Shonen for the intelligent storyplot execution and nicely planned action.
I can only think of one group of fans who probably isn't too happy but I won't mention it here. XD

[spoiler]Grumman made this chapter for me. You devious man you. The rest was kinda ho-hum, though satisfying reading. I had kind of expected Al's possession to last a lot longer, so the tension felt a bit too flexible. Greed and Ling working together was also refreshing.

[spoiler]It's not Maria Ross, but Mustang and crew get a brief bit. Works for me.
Pride can eat other Homunculi, absorbing their abilities and lives, and also attributes. That he's consumed Gluttony, he has his instincts and enhanced sense of smell, and probably the Failed Gate (maybe). Also, it seems the one thing his shadows cannot pierce or cut is Greed's Ultimate Shield. I find this interesting.

This chapter (88) demonstrates everything that is right and good about FMA. There is plot and character development, yet also moments of awesome (Hohenheim, anyone?). Actual fight choreography combined with decent dialogue, both contained within decent pacing. Many manga could learn a great deal from it.

[spoiler]I didn't know she was. I've just always enjoyed her attitude about things, the way she meshed into the story, how the character itself ticks. She was my favorite side character back when she disappeared in volume 10, and knowing Arakawa's knack for looping things full-circle, I've been anticipating her return for a some time.
This chapter provided a lot more than just a character (re)introduction; I liked the political intrigue and the shift in focus from Edward's group to Roy's was welcome. But I've been waiting to see Maria Ross for three and a half years. That's a long time to build enthusiasm.[/spoiler]

Alright, I am officially caught up with the manga. Thank you Christmas break. Now, on to the obligatory lists.
My favorite characters:
1) Scar
[spoiler]From the very start I liked Scar. Sure, he was a homicidal maniac, but his overall awesomeness more than made up for his crimes. Now, he has slowly matured and turned his overdeveloped sense of vengeance on the bad guys. If I were to be any character, I would be him. [/spoiler]
2) Riza Hawkeye
She is the personification of the ultimate sidekick.
3) Pride
[spoiler]First, his identity completely caught me off guard. Second, he is by far the creepiest homunculus. Third, he has, in my estimation, the most unusual way of fighting (Gluttony comes close, however). Fourth, he seems to be extremely intelligent. He was able to pull one over on Al quite easily at least. Fifth, he seems to be very powerful. This is evidenced by Hohenheim not wanting to fight him for fear of the destruction of the village. If even Hohenheim can't beat Pride without significant collateral damage, Pride must be quite powerful. Finally, he is ruthless. I practically cheered when he ate Gluttony because that is exactly what I would have done. [/spoiler]
4) Major-General Armstrong
Her life philosophy makes her immune to bribery, threats against family, egotism, corruption, etc. In other words, she is one of the few good guys that has true integrity. [spoiler] I really want to see her fight Kimbley, because he seems to be herself gone to the dark side. In fact, I think it quite likely that she will, given that they both have mentioned their adherence to the survival of the fittest ideology. [/spoiler]
5) Wrath
For obvious reasons.
Least favorite characters:
1) Envy
[spoiler]Most likely this is a reaction to his popularity amongst the fangirls. Aside from that he is merely a errand boy in the grand scheme of things. He has no ambition, no fighting skills, and no intelligence. In later chapters, when his true form was revealed, my respect for him rose significantly (Fangirls, meet Envy. Yes, that is him with the human souls drooling out of his mouth). No one who looks like that can be totally worthless (or so I thought, Marcoh demolished him fairly easily). [/spoiler]
2) Kimbley.
For some reason he inspires in me an unexplainable dislike. This is being more or less retracted as I re-read the chapters including him. There are a lot worse villains out there (about three dozen from Bleach come to mind).
Lastly, one plot question:
[spoiler]What happened to Kimbley's second philosopher's stone? I remember that it got knocked out of his hand, fell dawn the mineshaft, and got picked up by one of the chimeras. Did anything happen to it after that? If not, someone has a really powerful ace-in-the-hole. [/spoiler]

He's frighteningly sane, which is actually a lot more compelling than making him just a pyromaniac nihilist in the Anime.

I had determined to wait until the series was released in America to read it all, and be patient for once, but when I saw that the next volume doesn't come out until May I broke down and found it online. Now I am up to Ch 91. Some things I'd like to say:

Ahh, chapter 92.
[spoiler]While my initial reaction was, "Good riddance," upon some reflection, I'd like to see Kimblee stick around for a while. They should get rid of his alchemy circles, though - burn them off or something. I wonder why they didn't bother to do this when they imprisoned him in the first place? It's like letting him walk into prison with a grenade launcher that never runs empty. That makes a lot of sense. I suppose Father had Wrath pull a few strings in order to keep him available as a powerful pawn - he seems to have planned this out pretty fully. But I digress. I wonder why Kimblee seemed surprised to hear that Al planned to save the day AND restore his and Ed's bodies. Do you suppose it was his selflessness or his optimism that was surprising? From the sequence of dialogue, the latter seems likely to me. I'm worried that Heinkel will end up losing, though - it's dangerous to get within melee range of a guy who can make bombs out of whatever he touches.
Al's fight with Pride was nothing short of concentrated awesome. Transforming your recently-severed limb into a sword mid-swing? Awesome. Re-transmuting said sword to whip around your enemy's guard - and connecting? Very awesome. Transmuting a fake flashbang to get your enemy to focus on your hand while you detonate a real one at your feet? Deviously awesome. I applaud Arakawa for making her alchemists fight like the scientist-soldiers they are. And of course, anything Al-centric makes me happy. Al is just that cool. I'm wondering why he handed his Stone off to Marcoh, however. I should probably review the last few chapters.
It's also good to see the Armstrongs fighting alongside each other. Of course, watching Olivier fight is always fun because her ruthless pragmatism translates well to combat. A bunch of soldiers were just taken out by the massive homunculus you're fighting? Hey, free grenades! Sloth being able to dash at ludicrous speed was pretty unexpected, although I admit I should have been looking for his gimmick, considering all of the homunculi have some sort of special power. Hopefully Alex will be able to stop Sloth and rescue his sister - and then maybe she'll give him some credit. XD[/spoiler]

[spoiler]While my initial reaction was, "Good riddance," upon some reflection, I'd like to see Kimblee stick around for a while. They should get rid of his alchemy circles, though - burn them off or something. I wonder why they didn't bother to do this when they imprisoned him in the first place? It's like letting him walk into prison with a grenade launcher that never runs empty. That makes a lot of sense. I suppose Father had Wrath pull a few strings in order to keep him available as a powerful pawn - he seems to have planned this out pretty fully. But I digress. I wonder why Kimblee seemed surprised to hear that Al planned to save the day AND restore his and Ed's bodies. Do you suppose it was his selflessness or his optimism that was surprising? From the sequence of dialogue, the latter seems likely to me. [spoiler]I don't know if it is possible for Heinkel to lose unless he tries to hold him hostage or something. His teeth are actually drawing blood on Kimbley's neck. Kimbley would have to move his hands together or make a bomb and detonate it in the quarter of a second that it takes Heinkel to bite down a little more. Even with a philosopher's stone I don't see how he could blow something up in time.[/spoiler]

[spoiler] Surprisingly, the two Armstrongs seem to be doing pretty badly. They have only killed him once (out of a supposedly fully charged philosopher's stone), yet they both have suffered fairly major (har har) injuries. Also, the super speed Sloth caught me by surprise as well. I had expected a, well, a more Sloth-like special ability.[/spoiler]

[spoiler]I agree. It doesn't make much sense, but he couldn't be a main bad guy if he wasn't allowed to keep them. Besides, the military is corrupt so who's to say it wasn't planned?[/spoiler]

Agreed on the rest. I enjoyed this chapter, but it seemed kind of short, as all the chapters do when you're reading them one at a time as apposed to one volume at a time. Oh well, I'm looking forward to reading more. I wish they'd release the volumes in America faster. grr...

[spoiler]I actually liked that Sloth is secretly the fastest Homunculus. The reason Sloth is one of the Cardinal Sins is because its a waste of your natural talents, so its actually sort of clever to give him an ambitious ability he just never uses.
I read the RAWs for this earlier, and I was actually pretty surprised by Al using the stone so freely, considering how hesitant he and Ed have been to use it previously (being, you know, the Philosophers Stone). So I liked Heinkel's little speech in the first couple pages. As for Kimbley, I imagine he's a bleak pragmatist, so saving the world and yourself is simply unthinkable. He has a useful habit of surviving near death states though, so I won't count him out till Heinkel actually finishes him off.
As a side note, I wonder how Scar would take Kimbley's death. He already spared Envy (who should not exist right now in my opinion, but I'll save that for another post), which is fairly different than what I had expected from him.
And of course, Alex Louis Armstrong. Yes.[/spoiler]
