Oh man...you can't possibly know just how much I LOVE FMA. It, too, is what really got me into anime (and manga, for that matter). I first got interested in it from a fanart on DeviantART, where Ed had wings and a sword. Intrigued, I went to watch the first episode...and found myself hooked after the first five minutes. I know the series back to front, almost, and I've written over 50 fanfics for it (and keep on getting more ideas). I've discovered that there will never be another anime that will live up to what FMA is, and what it means to me.
I also read the manga, and am a huge fan of that as well. I like the manga ever so slightly more, but that's mainly because I hate the anime ending with a passion, and I have high hopes for what Arakawa's going to do with her manga ending. Also, it's more detailed about people's pasts, and kind of just better storytelling all around. But I still love the anime; there are aspects of it that just can't be reached with the manga. Namely, the voice acting. Romi Paku ftw!
Anyway, here are my favorite characters:
Edward Elric
Alphonse Elric
Maes Hughes
Roy Mustang
Riza Hawkeye
Hohenheim (manga version much more than anime version)
My favorite episodes: 3, 6, 7, 9, 23, 25, 37, 38 (mainly for the river scene), and 42. Yes, I consider all of those my favorites.
You can find out things about the past that you never knew. And from what you've learned, you may see some things differently in the present. You're the one that changes. Not the past.

"There's a difference between maliciously offending somebody - on purpose - and somebody being offended by...truth. If you're offended by the
truth, that's your problem. I have no obligation to not offend you if I'm speaking the truth. The truth is
supposed to offend you; that's how you know you don't got it."
