I've finally got the disc. Even though none of the tracks grabbed me like "Fix You" or "Warning Sign", every song is good. This is a great album, overall.
I love how it wraps around. The first track opens with the exact same riffs that end the last track, as if it's supposed to just keep playing continuously.
Favorite tracks... hard to say. "Cemeteries of London" is just solid. "Lost" is like a flashback to my youth, I feel like I'm listening to a brand-new Beatles. Then they cut straight into "42", which starts out amazingly like something from Zeppelin (once it gets into the lyrics, they start sounding like Coldplay again, then end recapping a line from "Lost".)
The next few tracks are just more of the same old Coldplay. (Track 5 really should be two tracks, so I guess I mean 5 and 6) Nothing wrong with that, I just don't have anything to comment.
Now we're getting into the best tracks. "Viva la Vida" is pure gold. Good song, intriguing lyrics, genius arrangement. "Violet Hill" I'd already heard, so it's hard to rank against the others that I'm hearing fresh, but it has some of the most rocking guitar work I've heard from this band yet.
"Strawberry Swing" - Now here's what I was hoping for. Something new and unique. Many years ago, they had one of these in "Clocks", and made the mistake of trying to recreate it on one track of "X&Y". This time, they found something new and fresh, instead. I think I might vote this my favorite.
One thing about it though. I was struck by how it sounded like Yuki Kajiura could have written it. Something about the instrumentation, I think, maybe the use of string and guitar chords as the principle rhythm element.
"Death and all his friends" The beginning didn't grab me the way Coldplay songs normally do, but overall it's a great piece.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.
