My aunt and uncle's dog

Postby Sheenar » Sun May 04, 2008 6:01 am

I got a phone call from my aunt last night and she told me that on Friday their dog Tia saw a squirrel in the window and my uncle let her out to go chase it (they always do this) --but apparently, the squirrel was on a post on the fence and she hit/bit/interacted somehow with the barbed wire. They didn't see what happened. They just found her outside, their other dog Mercy standing over her--she was having seizures and had blood on her face and mouth.
They took her to the vet and she was given meds to stop the seizures--she had a big hematoma in her mouth and is paralyzed--she can't sit up and she can't bark. She can't control her bladder or bowel movements. She has another vet appointment on Monday. They've been told to keep her crated and quiet until then.
This is upsetting for our family--Tia is 7-8 years old and is a much-loved member of the family. I just hope she doesn't have to be put down...she's such a sweet dog.
Please be in prayer not only for Tia, but for my aunt, uncle, and cousin. As stated in my previous prayer request for them, my aunt and uncle are struggling with health issues and with trying to get an aide for my cousin--and now this happened to Tia. Please be praying for them. They are dealing with so much.

Thank you.

Update: My aunt and uncle took Tia to the vet and the vet couldn't find anything obviously broken--she's puzzled as to what's causing all this. So for now my aunt and uncle are just keeping her quiet and crated and diapered. My uncle sat outside with her a little bit the other day. We're just all upset and concerned about her--we have no idea what happened or what's wrong.

Please be in prayer for my aunt, uncle, and cousin (and Tia too, of course).

Aw, that really is too bad. I'll pray, but something tells me this dog's condition was not a result of barbed wire. I can't see that happening to a dog as a result of being scratched. There must be some internal complaint.

Hope the dog gets well. We have three dogs here, and I know how attached you can be and how upsetting it is when you lose a dear pet. :waah!:

Update: I got an email from my aunt:

We took Tia to see a doggie Neurologist in Houston today. This article explains what happened to Tia (essentially she had a stroke). The stroke she had was in her neck (cervical) and caused her to lose the ability to have balance, know where her body is in space, to have some loss of feeling, and left her with ataxia. This is apparently common in Minature Pinchers. All 4 limbs are affected, her right side is much worse than her left. She does not have control over her body, and is not able to tell us when she needs to go potty. She has lost 5 lbs since her collapse 2 weeks ago. She is very frustrated and obviously does not understand what has happened to her.

We also saw a physical therapist who showed us how to help Tia have the best chance of recovery with physical therapy. The best outcome is that she may be able to walk, but it won't be pretty, and she will need lots of help.

Poor Tia. If worse comes to worse, maybe you should have her put down. It might be the best thing for the dog.

Update: Tia is doing much, much better --she can now run around, bark, and control her bowel and bladder. She seems to be back to her old self.

Thank you guys for your prayers!

It's good to see that she's starting to improve. :)
I pray that Tia gets better real soon!:thumb:
