Favorite Anime Soundtracks

Postby Elycien » Fri May 09, 2008 2:25 pm

Getting sidetracked on another thread made me think of this. What's your favorite anime soundtrack? I'm a big soundtrack fan - most of what I listen to regularly is a soundtrack from some movie or anime - so I'm pretty critical. XDD

Personally, I think Miyazaki's movies are always scored incredibly well. Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away are about tied in that respect (well, in most things) for me. Hisaishi ranks as one of my favorite composers, period - his themes are always gorgeous and interesting to listen to, and I love the slightly Asian melodies he brings into his scores, even the ones like Howl's which are set in a more European environment. X3 It's really beautiful.

I also really, really love the Fullmetal Alchemist soundtrack. <333 It's gorgeous, and the anime wouldn't have been half as good without it. I actually bought all three discs of it because I enjoyed it so much ^__^ Especially the "Bratja" theme.

Oooh and I actually really enjoyed the soundtrack to Naruto - that series would have been quite poor without it. I don't think Naruto's as well-done as it could have been (please no offense to fans, because I do love Naruto) but the music is usually pretty good. FMA's better, but I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that Naruto was synthesized and FMA was for the most part actually orchestrated, so that comes as no surprise. Still, there are a few really outstanding tracks in Naruto's score, synthesized or not.

The FMA soundtrack is definitely one of my favorites--I own the 3rd disc.

Also, Gunslinger Girl has really beautiful music.

I really loved the music from Last Exile. I don't own any soundtracks unfortunately.

Castle in the Sky has a good soundtrack.

So does Giant Robo the Animation: The Day the Earth Stood Still.

The Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo soundtracks both have my fancy.

Cowboy Bebop (including Blue and Vitaminless), Haibane Renmei (specifically, Haneone and the hard-to-find Puchinone) are my top favorites.

Also like Witch Hunter Robin and Paranoia Agent.

Am hoping to get The Girl Who Leapt Through Time soundtrack soon.

Pretty much anything by Yoko Kanno. XD Cowboy Bebop and Turn A Gundam are some of the ones by her that I listen to regularly.

I like the music in Big O, too. Also, some of the stuff by Yuki Kajiura.

I would say my favorites are Baccano! and Paprika. XD Castle in the Sky has a gorgeous soundtrack too, and I also love the music in AirTV and Full Moon wo Sagashite. I agree that Haibane Renmei has a good soundtrack, and lastly, Honey & Clover's soundtrack is gorgeous. XD

Haibane Renmei — of course
Azumanga Daioh — better than the anime, in my opinion
Denno Coil — the best series and OST since Haibane Renmei
Spice and Wolf — I quickly lost interest in the show, but the imitation early music soundtrack is very listenable (it's playing right now)
Oh! Edo Rocket — nearly every number is a rip-off of a swing original (e.g., "Matsuri" sounds a lot like "In the Mood"), but it's still fun listening
... and Macross Plus, and Noir, and Cowboy Bebop, and Someday's Dreamers, and ...

Castle In The Sky. All-time favorite. It is the most awesome one tops. I still need to get the Japanese version though. I got the american version first because I think it sounded better.

Well, I like ALMOST all soundtracks, but then again I love music in general.

My favorites would have to be:
Initial D:(not really background music, but the music they race to and the intros/endings are really nice)
FLCL: I actually did buy a few soundtracks to this, the music is really well done, and its all by one band too. The Pillows I think.
Death Note: Its pretty good, I dont like all of it, but most of it is good.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The music was outstanding I thought. Some of the best music I've heard in an anime, especially as far as orchestrated goes.
Excel Saga: I'll admit, I am disappointed by it now that I bought the soundtrack, but still, the music tends to go really well with the setting of the scene at the time.

Easy to figure this out. I just have to list the soundtracks I bought CDs for!

Ah... okay, that's too many. I'll attempt to hold it down to the top five. If I can figure out which those are.

I shall use the standard of 'best for the anime they go to' instead of 'best music' or this list would be different in some places.

FLCL - easily the best match of music to anime ever. (and all opinions stated here are opinions after all. If you don't like mine, get your own!)

Noir - this show would still have been good, but not awesome, without the incredible Kajiura soundtrack.

GITS:SAC - Yoko Kanno at her best. I really do like other stuff mentioned in previous posts, too. I just like this one the best.

Paprika - Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant. I wish Kon had been using this guy when he did 'Perfect Blue', because the soundtrack there actually detracted from a very good movie. He found the right man for 'Paprika'. In many places, 'Perfect Blue' desperately needed the degree of eerieness that Hirasaw brought to the table.

Madlax - I was no where near as happy with the anime as I was with Noir (creator of Noir was trying to repeat the magic) but the soundtrack was wonderful.

Honorable Mentions to:
Oh, My Goddess (TV) - especially first season.

And one many of you may have never heard of: Dominion Tank Police. I know this ancient OVA wouldn't normally be mentioned in the same breath as the rest of these, but I thought the soundtrack was very good (with the exception of the very pathetic OP). And I own the DVDs but not the soundtrack in this one case (I don't know if it was ever available, frankly.)

I have others I could mention, but I set the bar at five, and I'm already up to seven.
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

Maokun: Ninjas or Pirates? (Vikings are not a valid answer, sorry)

EricTheFred: Vikings are always a valid answer.

I must certainly agree with your favorites listed here... I must say that ANYTHING from Yuki Kajiura is going to be full of 'WIN' and again with Yoko Kanno... one of my all time favorites would definitely be the Macross Perfect Collection... I'm old school... Oh! And Akira... heheh... great stuff. :)

My current favorites are any of the Yuu Yuu Hakusho soundtracks---I started by getting the Sai-kyou collection (and was really worried I wouldn't like the seiyuu's singing, but now I have all of them on my playlist!).

But also, the one I play every night now, is the Cyborg 009 CD, Super Best. It's got a lyrics booklet in black and white, and the 20 tracks feature a great range of ballads and up-tempo numbers. Wish I knew whether it was from the original 1960s series, the update, or any of the movies.
