Code Geass on Adult Swim

Postby rocklobster » Sun Apr 27, 2008 4:55 pm

This week marks the beginning of Adult Swim's broadcast of Sunrise's Code Geass. I just saw the first ep today and it was a great start. So what did you folks think of it?

I already seen it before it even got pick up over here and I don't care for it.

If you take this show seriously, then you are going to set yourself up for a let down, do to the fact that this show is purposefully over the top.

I feel that the people that haven't seen this series will have a let down by the end of it, because
Because there is not ending to it. It ends on a cliff hanger and you just have to hope that the the 2rd season gets pick up.
So, to offer a dissenting opinion, I actually liked it. It requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, it's downright ridiculous in some places, and the characters are frighteningly pretty-boy sexy-girl to the point that it makes the saner of us want to drive our heads into the wall.

Basically, the series is very over-the-top and melodramatic, and it definitely caters to fans like no other (I mean, the characters are designed by CLAMP, queens of fan-service, for crying out loud). It does try to pass off as this crack-philosophical commentary on war and racism, but it's more pulp fiction than anything deep. I personally am of the opinion that it is possible for a viewer to take something meaningful out of the series, but then again, I said the same thing of The Melancholy of Suzumiya-Freaking-Haruhi so I must be on crack =P

Some people say it's kind of racist; I don't buy that accusation because I feel that both sides are portrayed positively and negatively.

I describe it as Gundam Seed drawn by CLAMP with a severely watered-down version of Yagami Light from Death Note as the male lead. I have been shot for this description, but while it is in jest, I think that you can gauge your opinion on these elements to determine if you'll like the series.

I have seen a couple of episodes, but not the ending.
I did know that it carried on in the second season.
Too bad the second season hasn't arrived on America yet.Don't know if in Japan it's finished.

The first ep of the 25 ep second season aired April 6 of this year in Japan.

So, its going to be some time, before it reaches America.

Um, I tried watching it last night, but due to me being tired, I fell asleep. Im sorry, I mean I really tried to stay awake, but it just put me to sleep. Its really weird because I was wide awake for Bleach and DN. Oh well I'll guess I'll try next weeks episode.

animedude, AS has the video on their site until the end of the week, you could probably catch on there..(I did)

I'm holding any real opinion off right now. I agree it seemed like an E7 meets Gundam seed. I'll probably stick with it though.

XD It's cool though, I like him a lot.

I predict this series will be flashback intensive.

I understand this show brought together some of the best in the anime business and that makes me wonder if I that made me set my expectations too high.

I saw about two thirds of the first season before I site I was watching fansubs on deleted the episodes (presumably, because the dub was about to arive) Code Geass has a compelling, but it's really not told as well as it could be. It caters to WAY too many stereotypical anime clichés that it would be find avoiding.

I'm gonna keep watchng, though. I'm already in way too deep to not see what happens next.

It was superior to Death Note.
Unlike Death Note I was really blown away by Code Geass and thought it had some really solid acting, especially the ever reliable trio of Johnny Yong Bosch,Yuri Lowenthal and Kate Higgins as the three main characters.
I also found out that Michelle Ruff is the VA for Lelouch's sister Euphemia.
So that is something else to look forward to.That and of course the Knightmare mecha.
In short it was fun!!!!

ML, I'd really prefer that you stay on topic in this thread and keep comparisons to Death Note (honestly, please drop it) and bunny suits out of this thread. Feel free to talk about the show all you like, but do stay on the actual topic, please.

Off topic:

I am not referring to your opinion on which show is better, ML, that's your opinion]always bring it up to bash it unnecessarily. That's what I was referring to. You can have an opinion, but bashing something is never well-accepted nor particularly on topic, especially in this thread.

Lastly, calling me a moron is probably not in your best interests. Further conversation on this subject will be taken to PM.

Please, guys, don't start sniping at each other...
We are all brothers and sisters in Christ. Let's treat each other with respect and leave room for grace. Please.

No offense, I watched last night's episode...and I was turned off (at the beginning credits). I don't know, I guess it was the style (not to be picky or anything). I continued to watch about 5-10 min of it, then picked up a book while my sister watched it. Then we fell asleep.

The thing is, it reminds me of too many anime shows I watched.

The pronunciation is geh-sh, like guest with the 'sh' on the end, or gi-sh (the 'i' is 'I'), both monosyllabic. I'm surprised the spelled it with two 's', I've always seen it geas, but the two s make more sense since the ending sound is a 'sh'. Also, there is a slight difference in Irish versus Scottish pronunciation.

W-whoa, really?! That's totally not how they say it in the Japanese. It's romanized as "giasu."

I guess the dubbers took some artistic liberties? =D Or are the Japanese to blame? XD (But geass isn't a real word, right?)

Heck yes it is real. XD It's an ancient word that is part of British folklore (I have an interest in such things so I thought it was funny when I heard that they were going to make an anime about 'geas' when I first heard about it). It's a type of spell or curse that forces the person under it to obey the person who invoked it. There is also a difference in how the ancient versus modern words are pronounced, but I went with the modern version.

Wikipedia article for Geis

As for the Gaelic-Japanese-English translation, it just got mangled. XD Did you see the romanji for the French name Lelouch Lamperouge ? It's Rurūshu Ranperūji. Not even close! XD
