Magnet + Monitor = Pretty Colours!

Postby RidleyofZebes » Sun Feb 24, 2008 7:06 pm

Yeah, I know it was dumb... but I did it.

Problem is now, how to get it to go away.

I've already turned the monitor off at the button and let it reset, and I've been degaussing it every 15 mins. There's still this small light-purple patch in the middle of the screen.

I forgot everything I was told about how to fix something like this... :eh:

Help me...?:sniffle:

Approved method.

Things that you can easily do yourself, without special equipment, are dangerous for the monitor and likely to make the problem worse.
Good luck, hopefully someone else can prove me wrong.

...and one more thing.
You might want to lay off the "degaussing it every 15 mins". The internal coil is not meant for more than occasional use, so they tend to be cheaply made and will fry if overused.

I remember doing that years and years ago with an old Commodore monitor we have. If I remember right, I think I just ended up unplugging it from the wall altogether and left it overnight. That did the trick for me; hopefully it helps with you. :)

[Quick edit: Use Valkaiser's method if mine doesn't work. ^_^; ]

Yeah... I remember doing it with a speaker magnet when I was younger to our TV. I used that TV for, oh, 10 years after that with that smudge on it. The smudge dulled over time, but you could always still see it.

The self degausser will burn itself up if used too much. It gets hot. They make external degaussers, which you can use to do it yourself, but they are marginally better than the internal one-allbeit they can be used over and over.

*sigh...* It's still there. Now, it's just a small, faint, purple smudge in the middle of the screen, but hopefully won't cause too many problems.

Does leaving it plugged into a surge strip with the switch turned off count, or do I need to just unplug it entirely?

Run the magnet over to where your hard drive is. That should take care of the monitor.

Not funny.

Have you tried the electric drill and a magnet option? Be careful not to drill a hole in the monitor, though.

That would probably be all right, as long as the monitor isn't getting any power to it. Hope it works. ^_^

Dude, remind me to never let you moderate Anime Angels' Techno-Nerds forum. ;)
