Unless you have some concept of visualization in your mind, yes, the death note would be useless to you.
Mave wrote:Question: Does the Death Note work for someone who can only visualize the target when he was young? Ok, I want to kill Dude A coz as a kid, he bullied the crud out of me. I haven't seen Dude A for ages but I know his name. Can I still kill him if I remember his younger face and wrote his name down?

No, you need to visualize what they currently look like.

And as for writing down Satan's name, I was under the impression that the death note only took effect on beings on our plane of existance. Satan, being an archtypal heavenly being on the level of, say, angels, would be beyond our reach, even if we knew his name and face.

Unless a blind person acquired shinigami eyes . . . if that's possible.

That makes sense. IIRC, you can't kill shinigami with the Death Note, and they're somewhat like angels/demons of death . . .

The funny thing is that just a few nights ago, I had a dream that I had won a Death Note in some contest. In the dream, I assumed it was just a plain notebook that was made to look like a Death Note as a promotion for the series. I never acquired it before I woke up . . .

I would also burn it. No human being should have such power, except for Jesus [who already does].

Besides, if I'm going to defend the ones I love, I'd rather not have to see the attacker's face clearly, know their name and how to spell it, and then have to write it down and wait 40 seconds. I'd rather have a compact single-action .40 caliber handgun with +P hollowpoints in an easily accessible, discreet holster, thanks. It's considerably more practical.

Asking is certainly fair, but I think I will ask we leave the Dr. McNinja tangent alone from this point. Amusing, yes, but it distracts for everyone who doesn't understand the references.

Didn't they usually phrase this like a "trading" of eyes? If so, would that blind person acquire an ability to see in a normal sense as well?

How to Use: XXI says [from deathnote7.com ~ mind the popups]: Those with the eye power of the shinigami will have the eyesight of over 3.6 in the human measurement, regardless of their original eyesight. Ergo, a blind person could use the Death Note if they traded half their remaining lifespan for shinigami eyes.

I'd probably mistakenly take it and give it to a cage full of gerbils, then laugh when I realized what I did.

Seriously? It would all depend on it's power source. For example:

If it were demonic in nature, I'd take it and bury it in dung then burn it like the filth it is.

If it were divine in nature, I'd still not use it and I'd put it in a safety deposit box. However, given the way our wonderful and wise God is, I'd say He'd be very unlikely to allow the creation of or create such a thing. Which leads me back to example one. The remaining questions are: How would one decipher its true nature? What would the true rules be for such an item given our theological bend on things? If a Christian, well meaning or not, used such a book, what would happen to their immortal soul? Given the potential answers for that last question, would you still use it should you be given the choice when you have an incredibly hard decision? If you didn't have to worry about your soul, and knew that somebody (who is saved) was dying of a fatal illness with absolutely no hope ... would you spare them the suffering and kill them or would you hold back on using the book - instead you opt to pray and medicate the sick person in spite of the grim prognosis? I still would not use it, even if I had no spiritual consequences.

Quite a gravedig. heh.

I can see myself attempting to rid the world of evil, and in the end going crazy. With that much power, I doubt I'd be able to stop myself, quite frankly.

And I meant that completely seriously.

To be completely honest (albeit in a purely joking manner), intention to make the series revolve around Misa would be a good indicator of soullessness to me. ^_~ Ugh, Misa . . .

I personally wouldn't use it --I'd destroy it.

But I came across this on the Internet and I think it applies.

Think what Scar would do with the Death Note.

This is a scary thought... the FMA series would be over rather quickly...:eh:

So if you ever find a/the Death Note, don't give it to me...

Question: can it be used on organisms besides humans, like animals?

A Death Note requires both a victim's face and name to be clear in mind.

A Winchester '73 does not.

In any case, I don't think animals have distinct names or facial features, so probably not. Good thinking though.

A side question that I've been pondering is under what circumstance would it be OK to use the Death Note?

Exodus 20:13 has the most famous verse dealing with the topic "Thou shalt not kill." However, it is clearly not a blank statement saying that under no circumstance should one ever take the life of another. This commandment is aimed more along the lines of murder - the taking of a life without just cause.

Indeed, the Bible goes on to not only use capital punishment for certain crimes but also allows for individuals to avenge the wrongful death of a kinsman. The former can be explained away as the right of a government and not an individual but the latter is much more like vigilante justice.

So is it ever OK to use the Death Note? If so, under what circumstance?

Although, it would be very tempting... I don't think I wouldn't be able to kill anyone u_u

Come on guys.. you know me better then that ^ ^

But, if it were to be used for different things. Like, getting rid of world hunger or something like that. Yeah, I'd use it get rid of that, but still.. would that be going to far o.o?

I know, I went off topic :P

How do you use the Death Note to get rid of world hunger? Kill everyone who's starving?

Nah seriously, as much as I'd like to say I'd never use it, I know I would, and I doubt that anyone here wouldn't at least try it once, even if just to see if it's real ("the Death Note has that strange ability that would make anyone want to try it out."). Of course, I think that humans can still resist it EVENTUALLY-- the Death Note pilot chapter had a happy ending, after all.
