That would be a meganekko obsession. Moe is kinda difficult to describe in brief -- it lacks any real concrete definition, yet is very recognizable. Wikipedia it if you really want an understanding of what moe is.

"-People who try to cosplay as characters that you know they wouldn't look good as (I went to the cosplay labs and saw many girls dressed up as characters like Jack Sparrow, Luffy, and whatnot...it can get pretty freaky on there O.O)"

Aw, I think that's kind of mean -_-; Not everyone can be an attractive beauty, and cosplay can be fun, it shouldn't be exclusive just for people who can look good in it.

Partially agreed, but at the same time, 300 pound women should not cosplay as Sakura from Naruto. That's just wrong.

Or Sakura from Cardcaptor Sakura. That's even MORE wrong.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here, just because I'm evil like that.

Sure, they aren't quite photogenic, but where do you draw the line? Certain fans aren't allowed to participate in fan activities just because of their size? An anorexic 90-pound 5'6" woman might consider an average-sized 140 pound woman disgustingly obese. Some cosplay queens get angry when more mortal souls without perfect skin-- the occasional pimple-- try to dress up as beautiful women. In the end, many anime characters are generally so outlandishly attractive that flesh-and-bone humans can't ever do them justice anyway. We could say that anyone above the age of 12 or 13 is too old and wrinkled to pull off either Sakura anyway (15 for timeskip Sakura).

I say this because I really want to try to cosplay, but I know I'm not very attractive. I just want to do it for fun, not to be a runway star.

Cosplay queens scare me =D

minakichan: If you want to cosplay, then I suggest poking around the cosplay.com forums. There are plenty of threads about cosplaying to fit your body type, and I find a good handful of the people there are quite supportive. It isn't about being perfect or pretty, but I think picking a costume that will flatter you and who you are does a LOT to make you look good, regardless of your own personal opinion of yourself. I think a lot of people catch flak for cosplaying characters that don't suit them, not because they aren't attractive, but because they don't know what will work for them and don't want to put effort into finding out.

One of the BEST Queen Serenity cosplayers I've seen was a girl who was a bit on the heavy side, but she tailored her costume to fit her and bring out her best qualities, and I admire her a lot. On the flip side, some of the most ill-suited cosplayers I've seen were 'skinny'/'pretty' girls who didn't know what they were doing and chose to cosplay characters with outfits that they just looked silly in.

Ultimately, it ISN'T about "cosplay queens" or trying to be "outlandishly attractive". It's about knowing yourself and playing to your strengths.

What, by the way, is a furry? I heard that word in an episode of Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged and have no idea what it means. I'm afraid to go looking/surfing for the answer, because I really don't want to pull up something bad.

The fans that scare me are the ones that apparently have no brain..."Is that a dog?" "No, it's a child cosplaying as a dog! Of course she's a dog!!" Or the ones that do a lot of screaming "Doggie! Doggie!!" --these were about 14-17 year olds. The sign on Pebbles' pack says "Do not pet or distract. Working Service Dog" --can't these people read?!?
Sorry, but it's hard to enjoy yourself at a con when you're being harassed/swamped by teenagers every 5.7 seconds...

Alright, you make a very good point, Debitt, and that's very interesting, I'm going to check it out! And no worries, AsianBlossom, I know you didn't mean to be mean ^^. Haha, true, I think Man-Faye may be a line-crosser, especially considering that he frightens young children (and not-so-young non-children). But I think some crossplay-- when we're talking girl-to-pretty boy-- is OK. I don't have a reason for that though, so it might just be social norms affecting the way I think -_-; (Or it could just be me making excuses, because the character I want to cosplay is a girl who disguises herself as a guy XD)

Sheenar: Furries are animals that are in a humanoid shape. They can also refer to people who like furries. Sometimes furries are pretty harmless-- think Disney-esque cats and dogs dressed in human clothes and walking on 2 legs. Furry fan culture can go into the, er, sexual sides of things, and that's when it gets a little... yeah, I won't go into it any more.

While I had the....uhm, infinite honor of seeing both Man-Faye and Man-Tifa in close quarters *shudders*, that doesn't mean that crossplay, either way, is inherently frightening. :|

Rabid Yaoi Fangirls... need I say more?

And to counter something that was mentioned earlier, I think most guys in general dislike yaoi (no matter their preference). The fact that most of the plots are stupid, the characters are unrealistic, and it's usually written by women for women contribute to that a lot.

Another one that I didn't realized scared me until I went to a anime convention: great big burly guys dressed up as "cute" little girls with short skirts. OMGosh the PAIN my eyeballs went through!

That's crazy. First episodes are almost never indicative of the quality of a series, as they are usually just trying to establish a setting and characters. Even my favorite anime of all time has the most boring first episode ever.

I think anyone who looks for subtext of any kind in any type of anime or any other type of show can be scary. Then also the types who take it to the extreme of seriousness and turn it into some sort of religion. And finally the people who push your buttons simply because you don't agree with them.
