What kinds of fans scare you the most?

The real heart of CAA; discuss specific series, issues, and things related to anime here.

Postby Debitt » Sat Dec 08, 2007 9:43 am

No particular brand of fan scares me. Sure I roll my eyes at some of them. Sure I rant about some of them when I'm not in mixed company. But being openly 'scared' of people at conventions, for example, just gives stupid people power over what should be an enjoyable time. At any rate, I find it to be counterproductive on numerous levels.

Ah, so that's what an Otakukin is. I used to be one back in middle school (very freaky; don't *ever* fall into that trap).

What proably bothers me the most is that all of these fans are giving anime a bad name. Non-anime fans see the phycho, yaoi-crazed fangirls and assume that all fans are like that *and* that anime is nothing but gay/lesbian porn.

I get annoyed by people who think that the Japanese representation of American politics/culture/attitudes in anime is somehow a factual representation; a pure, genuine, insightful uninhibited and uncensored commentary on the reality of the nature of the US supposedly so often obfuscated by a government conspiracy and we who disagree with them are too narrow-minded, brain-washed, or just plain dumb to recognize it.

Ok, so the KH2 ending was a little, well... But it still doesn't absolutely confirm anything!

No, it doesn't, but it was vague enough that yaoi fans could latch onto it fairly well. XD

The Japanese Culture fans...well...I would be considered one of them, but I don't think when I go to Japan they're going to treat me like God. I mean, I haven't risen from the dead, I didn't create the earth, and I'm mostly just lowly and strange.

However, I will state that it did help me finally pick a major for college and enhance my desire to become a professor. Why? Because it made me want to study Japanese culture with a critical eye.

As for what type of fans scare me?

Yaoi fangirls WITH PADDLES. Not only that, but working security around these types of people REALLY gets tough.

What do I fear?.....

1. People who try to make up their own different love stories (as in different then how the story goes) to a series whether it be a fanfic or amv and then call it something like Shadamy or Tails X Cream, it's just really disturbing....
2. Immature fans of any series (the most annoying being the ones from Sonic X and Naruto...as in the really immature ones)
3. The people who claim that the characters in an anime series are there REAL FRIENDS.....It's sad, but I see this in amv tributes it seems all the time....

--Non-canon Yaoi Fangirls.
--Yaoi Fangirls that decide to write a non-canon, badly spelled and badly punctuated fanfiction.
--Anyone that decides to write a non-canon, badly spelled and badly punctuated fanfiction.
--Furries (the serious ones).

--Other Elitists (i.e., "You haven't heard of [obscure anime title]? And you call yourself an anime fan?)

There are probably more. XD But that's all that comes to mind at the moment. XD

They sell "I <3 Yaoi" and "I <3 Yuri" paddles at conventions. They're glossy and wooden. I've seen them used on several occasions to actually hit other congoers, which was an unfortunate sight indeed.

EDIT: With those incidents in mind, I boggle at the fact that con security still allows those things, while they make a big deal about props that are harmless.

No fan really scares me, but there is one type that I find rather irritating.

The mindless obsession fan. These have a tendency to have a blind devotion to something, whether it be a particular show or just anime in general. They tend to take it personally when you dislike their chosen obsession. They also have such blind love for the chosen object that it will be proclaimed as the "best" without any real reference to any other medium (Or in some cases, exposure to the same medium from their own country).

Yaoi fans will latch on to anything.

Even stuff that isn't there. My point was that unfortunately KHII set itself up so that any SoraxRiku pairings could be considered canon.

That's why I hate yaoi, yuri, and hentai fanatics. They make us other anime fans look like jerks who watch porn all the time.

I'm not really scared of Wapanese, Japanophiles, etc more than I am scared of people who worship voice actors or J-pop/rock/hop artists. They're real people, jerks.

But moe fans...MOE FANS...oh gosh. They say that "ELFEN LIED IS TEH BEST ANIME EVAR!!! LUCY LOOKS SO HAWT!"

Really, those fans are just scary. Especially when they...cosplay as their favorite character.

Moe fans are the guys who like girls with glasses, right? At this point, that is my understanding of them.

I can't stand:
-Yaoi/Yuri/Hentai fanatics (haven't met any, but if they're obsessed with it, it seems that they would need to "go home and rethink their li[ves].")
-People who try to cosplay as characters that you know they wouldn't look good as (I went to the cosplay labs and saw many girls dressed up as characters like Jack Sparrow, Luffy, and whatnot...it can get pretty freaky on there O.O)
-People who treat you like you're stupid or make you feel like you're stupid for not watching Naruto or Inuyasha (it's just not my thing!!)
-People who bombard you with a series, even if you already like it ("POKEMON!!! POKEMON!!!" shouted the crazed teen at a youth shack night...I almost poured my Sprite on his head because he practically shoved his face in my face. I didn't because he started choking on some paper he had in his mouth...don't ask...)
-People who think they're better than you because they know more about the Japanese culture than you do.
RESPECT THE UNBORN AND CHOOSE LIFE...your mother did.

I for one can't stand fans of any series where they introduce you to a series, and the first 4 episodes are really blah. Then they say "Oh, don't worry! It gets really good after episode 15!". COME ON! If I'm not interested by episode 4, what's the point of sticking around watching lame episodes until I get to the good part? If I'm gonna keep watching an anime from beginning to end, it has to hook me by (at the most) the first 4 episodes.
