Main Character: Male or Female?

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

I don't play enough video games to really answer. Technically, I'm wasting internet by answering. >.>

But when I did play video games, I liked the smaller, more mobile characters (like Ditty Kong!) regardless of gender.

That picture is clearly photoshoped as no mortal being could defeat the Master Chief, and definatly NOT with a crowbar.

And no that is not fixed. Master Chief owns all shooter heroes. XD

It was particularly bad in Gunbound with the higher level players. o_O; -- amusingly, there was nothing in the default female Gunbound sprite that would really define it as female, outside of the red uniform and longer hair. It's almost sad what levels people would sink to in MMOs. =[

Speaking of shooter heros, it is sad that I just found out that Samus was a girl like, a couple months ago? v,_v... I always remember her as being a popular Smash Bros choice, and always thought shooter+armor=male, but apparently no...

Heh. Not necessarily sad, but certainly surprising. Samus really demonstrates for me the irrelevancy of a character's gender in a game without plot.

In a non-online context, it really does not matter to me... though I do have a slight preference to women characters since... well, women are pretty.

In MMOs or multiplayer matches (like FPS games), I always chose a male avatar just because I felt that in a social context I should represent myself accurately to a certain degree. And I do not enjoy dealing with gender confusion conversations.

I can understand if someone wants to play as a different gender just for doing something different.... But who would in their right mind would actually enjoy the confu-

I voted for males because it would be improper for me to say that if, as in a third-person perspective game, I have to look at someone's backside for hours on end, I would rather look at something more *ahem* interesting, and because I hate feminism. Anyway...

In MMO's I can go either way. I play males and females. In fighting games I usually choose males, because I prefer power over speed.

Happened a lot in FlyFF. That and equipment was cheaper for a female.

....You pretend your a girl.

Well the fact that your lying in it of its self makes you more of a woman, good job!

I have to be a male in everyday life so at least when I'm playing games I get to be closer to a female than almost any other legal/moral way.

Unless the girl looks stupider than the boy does. cough Pokemon diamond/pearl cough

All this discussion about female leads and no mention of Alis Landale?

(Perhaps Spoony Bard knows of whom I speak).

The main character and heroine of the original Phantasy Star. Back in an era where female leads were unheard of, Alis was quite a great and mighty character. I exaggerate. However! Alis did not succumb to the trap of many other female leads, especially in these modern times. She wasn't a sex symbol and she was quite, um. Good.

On another topic, in an MMO or that (if I even bother to play one) I always play as a male. Because being female is like, um.... awkward? I has a beard, yes.

For me, it doesn't matter. As long as the games good, I'll play it.

It actually sort of makes me mad whenever someone won't play a video game because of the main character's gender. Take Valkyrie Profile, for example. A lot of people I know wouldn't even consider playing such a great game for the petty reason that the main character's a girl.

Interesting question. Personally I don't mind playing either male or female characters in a game and if there are differences in the story depending on gender I usually play through as both. While this is true for all games I play I have noticed that the majority of my City of Heroes/Villains characters are female. Haven't figured that one out.
