Sorry about the mess this weekend

Postby Straylight » Mon Mar 15, 2004 5:01 am

Apologise for the downtime on Sunday.

Our hosts are currently trying to migrate all their webhosting accounts onto new, faster servers. They were performing a server move on Sunday which took a lot more time than expected due to technical complications. The migration unfortunately failed. Our hosting providers will attempt to move the data again in a week's time.

Next weekend also coincides with the final release date of vBulletin (our forum software), so there will also be an upgrade during this time, unless that release is delayed (which I think is unlikely). We are currently discussing the addition of many exciting new features to the forums, which will be included with the upgrade.

Feel free to discuss or ask questions in this thread.

Glad to be back up, though not in optimal condition. It's rare I log on and find that I have very little to catch up on here. In a way, however, a bit refreshing.

Hey Straylight,

No need to apologize, from my side. Maintenance, upgrades and stuff like this are important and we're glad to have you handle it. ;)

The downtime this weekend didn't affect me that much, because I was on the road going back to school for most of the day. :eyeroll:

New features...sounds good.

May we get a hint at what some of these new features may be? Or are we only allowed to speculate until they are implimented?

And do not worry about the downtime - stuff happens! Besides, it was for a good cause. Faster servers, better load times, etc. etc. It is all for the sake making the CAA an even better place to be! :thumb:

Though I have to say I didn't know what to do yesterday, I think I checked to see if there was any progress every 5 mintues for 6 hours. But I have to say I'm just glad CAA is back up and downtime is something everyone has to go though. Whatever needs to be done :thumb:
"Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
and things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art; to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul."

Sure!

The three biggest mods in discussion are a Flash based arcade system with high-score tables, a "pokemon" type game where you raise pets and fight other member's pets, and a big modification to the admin backend which will make moderation easier. There are a few smaller tweaks, like quick reply on PMs, and a feature that allows users to search for similar threads before they post a new one... none of this is confirmed yet though.

LOL!! All this time I've been wondering when kaldris is gonna get past '2 percent' and you've been playing pokemon! Oh gosh thats funny....

Do you think there would be room for Java games in the arcade? I made a couple a long time ago but haven't found much use for my Java skills as of late (programming 3D stuff like Starsheep is more fun in a lot of ways and I got bored of applets). I would be honored if I could help out by making CAA games :D Actually flash is often better but I don't have software for making that stuff, unfortunately :shady:

Bear in mind that all these mods come from vbulletin.org -- which is kinda like a semi-open source database of vbulletin modifications. I didn't make any of them.

Now that we have that out the way, the arcade system only supports flash games, and modding it for Java stuff would be complex at best. I've decided that the pokemon type game will probably not be installed during the upgrade, because it's a bit buggy at the moment. Might be back later though, when the author patches up his code and removes some of the cheating exploits.

Would it operate properly for any flash game, or just for a select few designated by vbulletin? Because I think that could be rather interesting. It'd be interesting to have a CAA high score on certain games...

Existing flash games can be modded so that they fit into the system, but you need to have a copy of the source code so that you can find out what the score variable is. There are about 20 games available for this thing because lots of people have helped modify games in this way.

Go Charlizard! GOOOOOOOO! (Sorry, I haven't actually watched Pokemon... Ever. Except for one episode and I rarely admit to that. ^_^]

[size=84]Those all sound like really cool ideas! Fun fun fun, especially the raising pets and having them interact with others - very NeoPets-ish. :thumb:

As if straylight would make a site that didn't run on firebird

I dunno... somehow I'm not sure I can see gladiator battles / dog fight scenarios being totally christian. Still sounds pretty cool though, if you pull it off :)

Well, if we don't attempt to put a Christian message in it, it would be just a game. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable controlling angels/heavenly guardians, etc. Not that I'll have time to play it anyway.
