Ah, that's interesting. They decided to call him "Kira" after all. XD That's cool. And I'm still impressed with the voices thus far. XD

Also.
So at this point from what Ryuk said its a race to find out each other's identity. And then the one whose identity is found out first they are going to die.
Also I doubt I should of used a spoiler, but thats in case anyone here either has not read the manga or has seen past the second episode.

I seem to finding this show even more interesting with each passing episode.

L sure is a crafty guy! These two are definitely evenly matched.

Ah yes, episode 2. When distaste for Light Yagami began.

Food for thought from someone who's polished off the series: each of the central characters can be seen as a metaphor for justice. And one person mirrors "True justice" in the series, with every other character being, by degrees, a perversion of this ideal.

And you'll all have some fun figuring out who's who.

That's an interesting thought. Personally, I agree everyone represents varying points on a continuum, but I wouldn't say that continuum includes what I'd call justice.
Are you thinking of L as "true justice"?
Gotta finish the anime when I can, on vol 11 of the manga, and just finished the 2nd Live-Action movie... AWSOME ending to that :) Exactly what I wanted:
Light got screwed over by L (who LIVED... until after he was caught...) and got what he had coming and had caused others to suffer... Ahh The irony...

Interesting. Who then? Personally, I would argue that the definition of justice is that your ends justify your means, but that's getting off the theoretical end. My first thought was L because he puts his ends (ie justice) before everything else, including human mores.

You could also make a case for Ryuk. I don't think that's who you mean, but think about it.

Soichiro Yagami.

He assumes innocence until proven guilty. He is tireless in his pursuit of justice. He is self-sacrificing. He obeys and is subject to the laws he defends and upholds, which he holds as universal; in the beginning, Kira only strikes down the filthiest of criminals. Plenty of people would write this off as good riddance to bad garbage. Soichiro recognizes evil for evil, even when committed against the refuse and darkness of humanity. Kira is not a vigilante, he is a murderer, and his growing influence over humanity will not change the character of his crimes.

And most importantly, Soichiro is human.
That comes with an implication that "true justice" is somewhat naive and often does not prevail.
Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 1 Corinthians 20-21

Well, true justice doesn't necessarily have the best success tally.
Soichiro death could even be symbolic of the losing sight of what justice is in the pursuit of other matters.
As for naivety, I'd rather associate that with innocence until proven guilty, although this character was also left out of the loop a fair bit.

The audience has a sort of God's point of view, and divine justice always prevails- Everyone ultimately got their just deserts. This can be construed as a moral of the story

"Proof" doesn't do much in my book. One look at the O.J. Simpson case tells us that. Also, proof can be manipulated to suit a particular agenda. See the following website for case studies of the sort of evils that comes from the manipulation:

Also on the recent topic:
Ah, for some reason he was completely off my radar in thinking about potential candidates. While I don't completely agree, I do think he represents a purer form of justice than most other characters. At the very least he upholds his definition of justice, which is more than can be said for some.
In an effort to be somewhat more on topic: I should probably drop by Adult Swim's website at some point to hear the English voices. It wouldn't hurt to see L's introduction again.

I love the Internet. Everyone is so quick to shoot you down. With smiley faces tacked on even.

:P

Actually, it never occured to me either till I read a comment somewhere that the author had said as much in some kind of interview or questionnaire. And the more I thought about it, the more it made sense, comparatively speaking. "Purer form of" is probably the best label for it.

But yes, Divine justice for the win.

Ah, he actually stated it? That explains why thinking about the series with that framework makes so much sense (disagree though we may about specifics).
In that case, what are we to make of his death mid-series? Is that symbolic of Light moving away from this ideal? At the time I expected the absence of his father to cause a major shift, but I don't recall one.
On a slightly related note, this has to be longest thread I ever created!

Does anyone have a quick/mini Death Note review? Just looking out for the main stuff like the sexual things, cursing and such. I'm not upsetted easily with demon/spirits (if there are any in this show) so you don't have to go into those details.
But, if anyone has watched Death Note before, and is willing to post something (or mail me about it), then please do so! =D Thanks for the help!

Mostly, there's just a lot of violence....moderate cursing...not too much
One almost sexual situation --won't go any further --nothing inappropriate happens

No nudity so far.

This is all through ep. 2. I haven't seen 3 yet, so I don't know that far.

Death Note is rated OT more for concept than for content. There's really nothing that should put it above PG-13 except for the idea of a teenage mass-murderer.

Still doesn't stop pre-teen kids from thinking Light is really cool and worth emulating. That's what I'm really afraid of-- there's already tons of middle schoolers threatening their classmates that they'll write names in their cosplay notebooks. Stick this series on Adult Swim, and any preconceptions mainstream adults have about anime are going to get a LOT worse.
