Mononoke anime

Postby Maledicte » Fri Oct 26, 2007 12:01 am

I just heard about this today: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mononoke_%28anime%29

I'm totally craving it, and the series it branched off of, called Ayakashi. Mononoke is about a traveling medicine seller (who for some reason looks like an elf) who goes around Japan exorsising mononoke, or vengeful spirits (yeah, what an original concept, haha). It's interesting because the Medicine Seller has to find out the underlying cause of the spirit's existence and reason for attacking, leading to mystery-novel type endings where the detective gets everyone together to confess and solves the mystery (there's a term for that, but I forget).

What's REALLY interesting is the animation style. Imagine Gankutsuou with Gustav Klimt's paintings with a bit of The Thief and the Cobbler on the side, and that's what you've got.

I can't wait until this is licensed!

Sounds interesting. I'll have to look out for it.

I was previewing the first episode. I can't stand the art style. It is too flat, as if depth doesn't exist. I just can't think in 2D.

I've seen the first five episodes so far. It's one of the more interesting recent series. The art is distinctive (I've got some screen captures here) and may take some getting used to; it reminds me of both Yellow Submarine and Sidney Sime. Mononoke is not for children: the first arc involves prostitution and abortion; the second, human sacrifice and incest. You don't actually see much that's potentially offensive — the storytelling is as stylized as the art, and some events are depicted symbolically. I can't give it a general recommendation, but it is of interest to thoughtful viewers.

Yikes. It looks harder to view than Gankutsuo.
K. Ayato: What happens if you press the small red button?

*Explosion goes off in the movie*

mechana2015: Does that answer your question?

K. Ayato: Perfectly.
