I would say no, because they change their name from Pioneer to Genon in 2003.

The history on why they change their name started with this.

Dentsu Incorporated (which is one of the largest advertising agency brands in the world) acquisition Pioneer company and its overseas markets in July of 2003, but the company of Geneon started on Oct 1 of 2003.

Dentsu wanted the Pioneer name on all of the electronics since the Pioneer name is well known, but they wanted a new name for the multimedia production arm of Pioneer Corporation and it was change to Geneon Entertainment.

Though the finality of things is still up in the air, Geneon Entertainment has sent out information to retailers regarding their 4th quarter plans. According to the information, Geneon will be shipping all releases they have in the queue for street dates through 11/05/2007. All orders placed after this coming Friday is non-returnable. As of 12/31/2007, they will be shutting down, apparently completely as AnimeNation is listing everything past 11/11/2007 as canceled. Plans for beyond 12/31/2007 are still up in the air but what little is being said indicates that they're intending to focus on their own properties in a similar way to Kadokawa Pictures USA is doing things.

This sounds to be word on things for the moment.

Oh snap...Good thing I finished my "Chobits" collection last week and don't have any "Pioneer/Genon" titles.

Is it safe to say that "Geneon" will no longer exist by this time next year?

No word of Hellsing Ultimate yet. Odds are it's gone as well, I'm not sure it even had a street date for the next volume. I see no reason why it would be exclulded from the same fate.

Is it safe to say that "Geneon" will no longer exist by this time next year?
It's a safe bet that they will cease to exist before 2008.

Licensed by Geneon that aren't seeing release:
- Nanoha
- Guardian of the Sacred Spirit
- Familiar of Zero
- Shana OVA

They can after the contract is up, that is if Geneon just goes a head and ends the contrack and I don't see that happening any time soon.

Just becasue of this news, doesn't mean that Geneon is done. As reported on AoD, they may do what Kadokawa Pictures USA type licensing organization does.

Go and get a contract with a dubbing company to do the dub, and then have a contract for one of the anime companies like Fun or ADV to handle the prouction, marketing and sales.

So far, this has work for Kadokawa Pictures USA licensing organization.

So, in this case, the V/A that did the voice for one volume Pre-Geneon anime character may not be the same V/A that does the voice post-Geneon?

(Example: Let's say if Mona Marshall played Minoru on Chobits for the first 5 volumes. Geneon hires ADV to complete the production. Would ADV be able to say "Meh, let's toss her and get Tiffany Grant in that role instead"?)

Or are V/A's signed to a contract?

They would be under contract from the dubbing company. They would only deal with one company that deals with the dubbing and one for the sells and marketing.

They only cancel DVD Sales and distribution and laid off much of its own sales and marketing teams earlier this month. There is no talks of Geneon being closed for now.

This is what Dentsu wanted all along. They wanted to let go of the employees of the DVD sales and distribution. They really want to contract their anime releases out to other groups.

If you were wondering about Bandai Visual's fate:

Anime News Network wrote:Following Geneon USA's decision to cease all sales and distribution activities, Bandai Visual USA has announced that its new and existing releases will be sold primarily through the company's dot-anime.us website. Geneon has been distributing Bandai Visual USA's DVDs until now. Bandai Visual USA is also working to develop an alternative arrangement for distribution to retailers, but until that is confirmed, product supply to both brick-and-mortar and online stores is likely to be delayed.

He was talking about Bandai Visual, not Bandai Entertainment, the latter of which is releasing Eureka 7. They are two seperate companies. Bandai Entertainment has nothing to do with this mess.

This is all probably temporary.

I don't know why the deal with ADV fell through, but it was obviously a last second decision. The deal was most likely locked in or Geneon would not have released its staff.

Chances are, things will get back on track once Geneon finds another partner, which shouldn't take too long.

I think you all need to check some sources on this...like AnimeNewsNetwork and Ask John at AnimeNation and TRSI.

Geneon USA is for all practical purposes gone. They cease operations at 5 pm Friday September 28. The only DVDs yet to be released from them are those scheduled to be released prior to November 6th (meaning they're already manufactured). If you're collecting a series that has volumes scheduled for release after November 6th, you'd better hope that another company picks up the rights.

Yeah, and if anyone wants anything else in Geneon's library, they should probably order it soon. Although, I can't imagine some of Geneon's more popular titles(like Samurai Champloo) remaining OOP for very long.

Yeah, Genon has close their practical purposes and all.

But from some of the anime insider people, believe that Dentsu Incorporated will do a Kadokawa Pictures USA type licensing and just stick Genon on the side.

Which it looks like Dentsu Incorporated wanted the whole time.

I feel that they would love to deal with a company that does its own dubbing and they could kill two birds with one stone.

Well, I guess THIS is the time to buy/order online Geneon titles before they disappear! I'm just glad I picked up all my Chobits and Haibane, and even then they already discontinued their Sailor Moon and Fushigi Yuugi (boxsets) ages ago, so lucky to have those too :) For what it's worth with their super expensive DVDs, they looked nice with their mini posters and double-sided DVD covers. Oh well, the world just became a little less expansive concerning DVDs (although SOME stores still amazingly up the prices on anime period... yeesh!)

Too bad for some collectors trying to pick up series like Rozen Maiden that just halts after vol 1 of season 2 :/

Just reported on ANN.

Dentsu Posts Extraordinary Income and Extraordinary Losses, etc.
Sep 27 2007

Dentsu Inc. (President & COO: Tatsuyoshi Takashima; Head Office: Tokyo; Capital: 58,967.1 million yen) announced today that it will post extraordinary income and extraordinary losses, etc. in its financial results for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2008, as follows.

1. Loss due to business downsizing of Geneon Entertainment (USA) Inc.

Dentsu's subsidiary, Geneon Entertainment (USA) Inc., which undertakes animation related business in North America, has decided to downsize its scope of business and increase business efficiency. As a consequence, Dentsu will post extraordinary losses, etc. of 4.7 billion yen on a consolidated basis and 5.1 billion yen on a non-consolidated basis in its financial results for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2008.

2. Loss due to withdrawal from business of D&T partnership

Dentsu has decided to withdraw from the business of the D&T partnership between Dentsu and Tohokushinsha Film Corporation (a joint sales business for broadcasting rights in Japan to foreign movies and TV programs). As a consequence, Dentsu will post an extraordinary loss of 7.2 billion yen on both a consolidated and a non-consolidated basis in its financial results for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2008.

3. Additional contribution of securities to the employee retirement benefit trust

In order to enhance the adequacy of its reserves of assets for retirement benefit obligations, Dentsu has decided to make an additional contribution of certain shares held by Dentsu to the employee retirement benefit trust. As a consequence, a gain on contribution of securities to the employee retirement benefit trust of approximately 7.3 billion yen (amount of contribution of stock holding trust: approximately 8.3 billion yen) is scheduled to be posted as extraordinary income in the financial results for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2008.

(No. 65 - 2007) 1/2

4. Impact on Financial Results

Impact on Dentsu's financial results for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2008 is expected due to the posting of the above mentioned extraordinary income and extraordinary losses, etc, but the outlook for financial results is now being assessed. Dentsu will announce amendments to such outlook if necessary, when the assessment of the outlook for financial results is completed.
