Touhou Shmups

Postby Ingemar » Sun Sep 16, 2007 11:15 am

A popular series of vertical scrolling shoot-em-ups by ZUN. Except, instead of controlling a ship, you are controlling a girl, and shoot other girls.

I know that sounds extremely perverted, but there really is no H material in the games themselves (however, the rule 34 applies to the doujins, of course).

Famous for both music and extremely insane hard to dodge bullet patterns. Many people have a hard enough time trying to finish with no continues on Easy difficulty.

There are ten official games so far. Here is an example from number 7, "Perfect Cherry Blossom." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvVcjaUV1Sc

I've been obsessed with the Touhou games since the release of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (TH06). I work my way up VERY slowly in these games, but I love them to death.

So far I've managed to beat TH06 on Hard difficulty without continues with Reimu A, and on Normal in all other configurations.

I've completed Perfect Cherry Blossom (TH07) on Normal with all configurations. Currently working on Sakuya A for Hard difficulty. (<3 Sakuya)

Completed Imperishable Night (TH08) with all configurations on Normal EXCEPT for the Youmu/Yuyuko combo, which I will get back to at some point ...

Not terribly impressed with Phantasmagoria of Flower View (TH09), and don't really play it much except for the VS. multiplayer mode on occasion.

Shoot the Bullet (TH09.5) is pretty fun for a quick dose of gaming, but I haven't really given it a serious attempt.

Mountain of Faith (TH10) lacks a lot of elements that make a Touhou game ... well ... a Touhou game -- at least in my mind. It's not that it's a bad game, indeed it's the hardest one yet and quite well made, but it just doesn't have the same feel as the other games, so I have trouble caring. It's also a major step back in playable characters, having gone from TH08's 8 characters (TH09 has 12, IIRC), to having only Reimu and Marisa, which bugs me because I like Sakuya a lot. :p

There's a lot of amazing fan art from the Touhou games, though (as expected from any universe where every character is female) there's a lot of 'bad' material out there too.

[Yes, I'm aware there is one male in the Touhou universe, but he doesn't exist in the games]

Edit: I just realized I was listening to Touhou remixes as I was viewing this thread...

Edit again: And now I've gone and changed my avatar.

I've only started playing Touhou games less than a month ago. I started playing Perfect Cherry Blossom at Hard difficulty.

After I was done throwing random objects at my computer screen, I decided to backtrack by playing Embodiment of Scarlet Devil on Normal.

The article on a certain satirical parody encyclopedia may have been ironic, but it does look like most of the fanart out there is better than the in-game art. I remember the first Touhou pic I saw, knowing it was a Touhou pic was that one... with Reimu... with her arms up (it was a demotivational poster). I think I'll just leave it at that.

They're quite good. You can find them at nearly any anime convention, or import them. Either way, if you enjoy SHMUPS and ridiculous challenges, they're great.

There's yet another way you can get them, but I don't want to soil any virgin minds.

AGAIN! despite my language to the contrary, there is no H or ero material in the games themselves. Just wanted to reiterate.

Physical disk media. Problem is, you have to import it or go to one of the Comikets (and I doubt you would fly overseas just to attend a con but I might be underestimating you).

There of course, is another way but I don't wanna get into massive trouble.

And gamepad? I USE ARROW KEYS LIKE A MAN. even though all the characters, without exception, are cute girls

Oh..I don't have an avvie or a banner yet...

Anyways, thanks to Ingemer I've started playing The Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil. I DEFINITELY need a game-pad, and this game reminds me of why I'm a very light PC gamer. XD

But either way, it's really fun and I plan to keep going with it. Avvies and banners will come in due time.

For a gamepad, I strongly recommend the Xbox 360 controller. Easy installation, nice ergonomic design, and more PC games are making it their gamepad of choice and supporting it.

Now I will withdraw and let you Touhou fans go at it.
Find me on Steam, PlayStation Network (OmegaAmen), Backloggery, Twitter, and Twitch.tv

I am also in the Christian gaming group, Tribe of Judah in the Christian Gamers Alliance.

And it's not a PS2 clone controller. Although, I've heard there are modders who sell everything from Famicon to Dreamcast controllers that can be connected through a USB port.

And the Earth sized original Xbox controller scared me. But then again, the 360 is a lot more smooth.

I'll have to decide soon.

If you want a change of pace try also Immaterial and Missing Power. The demo is free (duh) and available for download; you can't play story mode in its entirety but you can play as most of the characters and there's even a patch for netplay.

it's a fighting game, btw
