I've always thought they were kind of ridiculous and figured it was cultural. I always picture the directors shoving a microphone at some character and demand them to sing. Like, Orochimaru. XD

Hey... when reading this, I'm picturing 'the director' as Haruhi Suzumiya, forcing Michuru to sing her theme song for Episode 0.

They're a little silly, but they still make me smile. And I'm in love with some of them, like This Light I See from Bleach. XD; Hitsugaya can sure belt it.

It's more promotional than anything else for the series, manga and radio programs surrounding certain titles. It also provides musical material for the VAs to use while on tour promoting their series.

Each character had their own CD with about 3 tracks--an original version, an instrumental version and maybe a remix. I remember (and love) the Character song Davis (Daisuke) V/A did called "Goggleboy".
The only American V/A that I recall that did anything like that was Vic (You guys KNOW I can't Spell his Last Name) rendention of "Brothers" from "Fullmetal Alchemist". I got it in my car now, and it really soothes the nerves when stuck in traffic. [/color][/SIZE][/font]

Woah, ridiculous, that's a bit harsh. Maybe I am saying that because I love character songs myself, but honestly speaking though, it is a bit of a promotional thing, especially that a good number of seiyuus are J-pop artists themselves.
Excuse my blinking, just got too many shifts this week.
