Air(TV) Dub

Postby Radical Dreamer » Tue Aug 21, 2007 12:15 pm

So! My Air vol. 1 DVD came in the mail today! I just watched the first episode, and I am VERY impressed by the voice acting so far. Most of the characters all sound relatively similar to the original roles, and the ones that don't sound similar (namely, Kano and Haruko) sound just as good as the original. Haruko's VA especially seems to have taken the role and made it her own, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how she handles later episodes in the series.

Anyways, who else has seen it so far, and what do you all think of it? :D Discuss!

So. Very. Impressed. I mean Vic Mignogna, Luci Christian and Monica Rial (three of my fave VAs) are perfect in the roles. Luci Christian does an excellent job as Haruko! I am glad to say that Air TV's dub is one of the best in recent years.

I saw episode 1 in the August edition of NewType, and I have to say, I'm quite impressed! I may invest in Vol. 1 when I finish my Chobits collection. The V/A's they picked were really well done!

Normally when I hear Vic (Insert Cool Yet Impossible To Spell In My Current Half-Asleep State Last Name Here) plays a character, I wind up thinking "Hmmm, where's Al?" His voice is very distinct and he sounds almost the same with every character he plays--except this one! He plays the lead role quite well! Also, I nearly fell out of bed laughing when I found out that Tiffany "Asuka" Grant played the little dog "Potato". She barks quite well!

When I have money I'll have to but this one. I have been looking forward to animes only to have the English voice acting feel like chewing aluminum foil.

Well, most of the time, when an anime's dub sounds less than acceptable, I'll just watch the sub instead. But in this case, I actually don't mind watching the dub at all. I still like the sub, but I can tell they put a lot of work into making the dub a good one. :D

Yeah. Wow. All I can say about this so far, is that I LOVE the characters so far (I've seen 2 episodes). Vic does a great job in this role, and I pray the Lord continues to use and bless him. As for the rest of the vocal cast, they are fantastic. They are the reason I already feel like I know (and love) the characters in the series. Also, they are transparent.

Transparency is the mark of an effective voiceover artist, in my mind. Meaning, that you never think to yourself "that's Vic Mignogna playing a drifter," or "that's Monica Rial playing an overly sweet-but-clueless girl," or, "that's Luci Christian playing a drunken-but-tenderhearted mother." Incidentally, I didn't realize Vic, Monica, or Luci were their characters until quite a long way into the first episode, and Luci until the second episode. Considering I watch Anime Network a lot, and these three have been in so many ADV productions that I've watched, I typically recognize them almost instantly.

Maybe that's more reflective of the typecasting going on, rather than their acting abilities (which I don't mean to question in any way - the are all wonderful). Still, I think all three of them really did something wonderful with this series, and I dare say that I'm just witnessing them be even better at their craft than ever. They are setting the standard here, no question.

Congrats again to Vic Mignogna for pulling in the Mecha trophy for best male voice actor at the 1st annual American Anime Awards. As an aside, congrats also to the rest of the award-winning FMA cast that made that story so real for me - it will always be a part of me. Great job guys. [End VO Fandom]

I don't know...I wasn't too moved with Tiffany Grant's portrayal of Potato...I just didn't get her motivation...it felt so dry...when she said "Piku! Piku!" it felt like she was pushing it too hard...it should flow naturally...

(Just kidding!) V/A cast is great!

While she does do a fine job with that role (XD), I do wonder why they chose to dub over Potato's lines in the first place. He doesn't say anything different in the sub, so I have to wonder why it was even necessary. After all, they left Pikachu's voice in place while dubbing Pokemon, so I wonder if it had something to do with copyrights?

Or maybe they just wanted to give Tiffany Grant another job! Personally, I think her and Vic (Insert Cooly Yet Difficult To Spell Last Name Here) are in competition for who can take on the most roles before the end of 2007. :thumb:

Vic AND Monica. Wow, I generally don't even give the dub a chance, but this is going to have to be one of those exceptions. I look forward to hearing/seeing it!
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.
