While I hope Madara turns out to be connected in some way to characters we know (instead of a random new antagonist) I somewhat doubt he's Obito.

If logic doesn't hold true in Naruto Universe, would it be possible for someone to have that eye without anyone knowing it (even Itachi or Sasuke)? Maybe it's that Magnolia Swirl mask that blocks detection.....I can't wait for the explanation of the face.

I don't think Obito is Madara. The Kyuubi said he hadn't seen eyes that evil since Madara, which leads me to believe that Madara is older than that.

366 is out. Civil war in the Hidden Rain, with Akatsuki's leader apparantly heading one of the sides...Jiraiya is heading off to investigate.

Meanwhile, Itachi apparantly only wanted to talk with Naruto, but I can't tell if he said anything notable or not due to sudden scene switching. Maybe we will finally find out what motivates Itachi.

I'm all for seeing other countries, but otherwise this chapter wasn't particularly notable (is it just me, or are all the chapters after the week off a bit short?). If Itachi and Sasuke fight I'll be irked.

That's my theory. We've been led to believe that Madara is ancient, and I wonder if perhaps he could have kept himself "alive" by possessing other Uchihas, this time it's Obito.

Because really. Tobi as Obito makes a lot of sense, but Tobi as Madara does not. Tobi as Obito as Madara... on the other hand... has a kind of twisted logic to it.

I was quite surprised to see Madara revealed that way, actually. Of course I'd wondered, but... ^_^ Heheheh, it's an odd coincidence, too. Someone mentioned this possiblity as a joke on another Naruto forum I lurk frequently. Everyone laughed the idea off as ridiculous and impossible.

So I now wholeheartedly believe that nothing is ridiculous and impossible in the Naruto-verse. XD Gotta love this fandom.

I don't see how Tobi as Obito makes any sense. The Naruto universe goes by the 3-man teams. In Kakashi Gaiden Kakashi was the Sasuke, and Obito was the Naruto, I don't see how he'd go from being a nice little ninja to being at the top of a huge conspiracy as evil as it is. I'm against the Tobi = Obito theory.

Also, in 367 Naruto's parents were revealed.

Comments about 367:

-So, Naruto is the son of Namikaze Minato(AKA the Fourth Hokage) and a red-headed tomboy from the ex-Whirlpool country named Uzumaki Kushina. The former is likely one of the most unsurprising plot twists ever, but it's good that Kishimoto finally confirmed it.
Interesting that Naruto has Dad's looks and Mom's personality/fighting style...

-Kakashi as Hokage? Coming from two sannin, that's quite an endorsement.

-"Beware of ROOT," huh? Maybe they will finally be used now, instead of being a hanging plot thread that came out of nowhere.

-I'm now kind of worried about Jiraiya's future well-being...

You beat me to posting! Darn.

I read somewhere that the esteemed manga-ka said in an interview that until the idea of using Tsunade came up, he was going to use Kakashi as the next Hokage.

I agree. For example, what is Sai up to anyway? And Jiraya better watch himself, could get ugly. And I hope the female Akatsuki does something other than stand there or just get hurt/killed/totally annihilated to make the bad guy fight harder.

Comments about 369:

-So, no more civil war, Akatsuki (or at least Pein) has completely taken over the Hidden Rain. Pein has a brutal policy and completely slaughtered anyone who had even the slightest potential of opposing him...
-Jiraiya looked understandably stunned at this. The former leader was apparantly a really strong guy named "Salamander" Hanzou who once faced down Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru at the same time and also gave them the title of "Sannin." Ouch.

I thought that was effective as well. My assumption had been that Jiraiya and company had just gotten those titles over time, but being given them is rather different. It would have been more effective if Hanzou had been vaunted as a legendary shinobi the entire series (like the 4th Hokage), but it still works.

Hmm.

I didn't like the way the Sanin were named myself. To me it just seemed as though the manga-ka was scrambling for a way to give Hanzou weight and credibility in a single chapter. Perhaps he is a character in the "Jiraya" folk tale?

I'm also surprised Jiraya would have such limited information on a whole country. Isn't intelligence gathering a shinobi strength? But I split hairs.

I like the attention to detail and design for the rain country and its capitol. I like the ambiance. Also Konan has a nifty ability; she's not just a fancy bullseye!

Oh, definitely. I still prefer it to a generic and essentially meaningless declaration of power.

Good question. Unless this is annotated, I do not see one:

Indeed. I can hope, but Naruto has a bad track record as far as female characters mattering.

It's true, it did feel like a way of hyping up Pein, but I echo UC's reply.

I believe it was stated that Pein killed anyone who could send accurate information to other countries.

Indeed. I can hope, but Naruto has a bad track record as far as female characters mattering.

But, recall that Temari (who was initially an antagonist) and Tayuya of the Sound Five were quite strong so I'm going to (hopefully) assume this Akatsuki member will be the same way.

I thought I remembered something from a previous chapter regarding a 'reliable source', but I couldn't find it. Carry on.

The connection to the former leader of the Rain does give more meaning to Jiraya's line in to Tsunade in 366 when he says, "I'm one of the Leaf's Legendary Sanin. You know what that means, right?"

Temari is a good example. Tayuya, however, appears and is immediately defeated. There is a difference between being powerful and actually mattering.

Exactly what bad theories are you thinking of? The only theory that mildly irritates me is that Tobi is actually a bad boy. (Yeah I see that banner floating somewhere in CAA....)

I still can't get over the image of Pain-sama as a psychotic older Naruto. It's the eyes.

(Yeah, I haven't quite wrapped my mind around it either. Hence the humorous nature of my banner. ("bad boy + heart = ???) While I expected there be more to him than meets the eye, didn't quite expect that. We'll just have to see, I suppose. Next chapter looks promising for some exposition.)

372:

So, I guess it's flashback time.
Looks like Pain and Konan were part of a trio of Rain Village orphans that Jiraiya took under his wing. I find this explanation interesting as it's different than what people were expecting(that at least one of them was a teammate of the Fourth).

Now, what happened to Rain Village kid number three?

I am a bit disappointed by this flashback. This entire arc feels unusually new, as they're entering a new country with entirely different history and shinobi.

Bouncing from the Bleach thread, databooks: I actually haven't looked over the stats as carefully as I did some others, due to lack of coherent raws. My main interest was seeing how current generation fighters compare to their parents and other Jounin. Note that the Third Hokage is maxed except for strength, and if we presume that deteriorated due to age, at one time he was the theoretical perfect shinobi. When new databooks come out, I'll be curious to see if the stat system changes, given how much stronger new villains seem.

Instantly generated answer of the moment: he is the Fourth Hokage.

Wow, no commentary here at all? I think this chapter has fuel for discussion, though it still feels like this stuff is being invented on the spot. Apparently there's a Granddaddy Ninja out there with his own eye technique. Considering the Sharingan's powers, if this one is "superior by far" it must be able to do anything.

More immediately, how Jiraiya fairs in this battle will determine the overall power formula of the series. At least I would assume things won't be inflated much past Pain.

While I do feel Kishimoto keeps inventing on the spot so it'll take him longer to end the series, at least he's doing a decent job of tying his ideas together.

I find it interesting that God was brought up in this chapter. I never expected anything of that nature to show up in Naruto. It's probably there for that "added interesting development" but it'll be interesting to see if the concept goes any father than that.

Concerning this "Sage of the six paths," I'm wondering if these "six paths" were the precursors to the five elemental styles of ninjutsu. But then what would the sixth one be?

Meanwhile, concerning the absence of Yahiko, I'm going to speculate and say something happened to him sometime after Jiraiya left and it drove the other two over the edge.

Yeah, although it's been a bit, from what I remember about them:
-Jounin (Kakashi, Gai, Kurenai, Asuma, Shizune) have better stats than special jounin(Anko, Ibiki), which makes sense.

-They didn't give stats for the Sannin which was irritating, considering they gave stats for like Dan.

-I remember thinking Hinata looked the worst statistically of the genin.

-Gaara (and his siblings), Haku, and Neji all had really good stats compared to others in the same age range, which can also be expected.

-Since when has "knowledge of hand signs" or whatever have any sort of effect in the series. That category felt odd to me.

Well, I thought the first image of Pain was similar to Naruto and for a split second, I did wonder whether Yahiko looks like Juugo. But I decided not to make a serious comparison because Naruto has so many characters, I've come to accept overlap in features.

I eh, don't really have much of an opinion of this amazing eye power/technique until I see how the battle goes. I can't remember what happened: Is Pain a shapeshifter or did he take over someone's body?

(And normally I'd agree with you about Juugo, but Kishi has been very good about making his kid characters look significantly like their adult counterparts, so I'm thinking that's too big a coincidence.)

That seems logical. Hopefully it will be something more complex that ties into Akatsuki's motives.

He seems to have a room full of bodies on beds; he lay down on an empty one and got up with another body. Given what he says, I think he hints they're different bodies for different purposes.

Eh, I find it so-so I guess. If he manages to pull off some good moves I won't be complaining that much, but I didn't really find it that impressive.

I'm more curious about that prophecy thing right now. They seem so sure that it is referring to Pain. How do we know it's not referring to Naruto? Just a thought I had.

Since it was said before that the Rin'nengan has the ability to save or destroy the world, I think it's safe to say that the prophecy was talking about Nagato; however, it'd be a bit of a surprise if it was talking about Naruto(don't think that's too likely though).

Maybe this question was brought up before and it's a bit off topic, but do you think Naruto will become Hokage? Not necessarily after Tsunade, but any time at all?
