Ah okay, thanks for the info. I understand about the meandering pace. Kino's Journey is like that, so I have no problem waiting for the next book to be released. I'll just have to keep an eye on this series' progress.

Well, I really don't know what to recommend. You liked none of those you listed? That's a pretty decent listing of (mostly) shonen action titles. Anything else I might recommend would be similar to those. Shonen action titles like these are rarely ever going to seriously focus on romance, focusing mostly on action/adventure/fighting.

If romance is such a big deal to you, there might be something shojo you could try, but I'm not familiar enough with it to suggest anything.

Well, the ultimate good "Romance" manga, to my mind, is "Kare Kano", but that doesn't fit the "Romance + Action" bill you're looking to fit.

For some reason, your parents rejected InuYasha, my favorite mixture of these two genres (I fully understand the other three cases). I wouldn't want another parent questioning my decisions concerning my sons, so I'll just accept that. It would be good to know what concerned them, though, because it would help in making suggestions.

For other Action+Romance titles, I will go ahead and suggest the following (with the understanding that some of these may have elements that your parents could reject them over):

Sakura Taisen.
Angelic Layer
Full Metal Panic (this is an unrelated, older manga than Fullmetal Alchemist)
Her Majesty's Dog
Cheeky Angel

The last one is one of my favorites, but I would consider it the most likely for some parents to reject, because the main character is a boy who was magically changed into a girl (a fact that only he and his best friend know. Everyone else's memories have been effected by the magic and think 'she's' just a tomboy.) Obviously, some parents will disapprove of this premise.

Another item. I haven't tried the Otogi Zoshi manga yet, but I loved the Otogi Zoshi anime. I think it should appeal to a "Rurouni Kenshin" fan.

My only guess was that they were trying to steer it to the audience more likely to enjoy it. I didn't see anything in it that I would be concerned about my pre-teen seeing, but I doubt he would like the book much.

hitokori, my suggestion would be Whistle! it's a perfectly clean soccer manga that boasts a great cast of characters, well-drawn artwork, loads of soccer action, sweet character development, and a fairly direct and simple storyline.

Well I'm almost done with Death Note and I need a new manga. It can't be that violent, about as violent as Death Note or Rurouni Kenshin. Also it can't have too much fanservice. About the level of Strawberry 100%.

Here are manga I like that I have completed:

Bobobo-Bobobobo (20 volumes)
Cowa (1-shot)
Full Metal Panic Overload (5 volumes)
Azumanga Daioh (4 volumes)
Kingdom Hearts and KH: Chain of Memories
Spiral: Suiri No Kizuna (26 volumes)

Manga I am almost done with:

Death Note (8 out of 12 volumes)

Ongoing manga I'm reading:

Pani Poni
Strawberry 100%

Manga I do not like:

Cromartie High School (Too weird for me, the anime is better)
Le Chevalier D'Eon (So. Very. Slow.)

What I'll be reviewing in the future:

A variety of suggestions that seem suitable for you:

Action:
Bleach
Sakura Taisen
The first Full Metal Panic series
The .Hack series
Real Bout High School (a little fan-servicey, but not too bad)

Comedy:
Yotsuba& (same creator as Azumanga Daioh)
Sgt Frog. (I like this one. Right in there with Pani Poni)
Dr. Slump. (I find it too juvenile, but my kids like it.)
Comic Party (pushes fan-service, but to a similar level to Ichigo 100%)
May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May He cause His face to shine upon you.
May He lift up His countenance and grant you peace.

Maokun: Ninjas or Pirates? (Vikings are not a valid answer, sorry)

EricTheFred: Vikings are always a valid answer.

Mmmm, not sure why, this goes on the comedic side, but I recommend Nodame Cantible. It's a newly translated manga that seems pretty clean and something I definitely want to look into. It has that Honey and Clover feel.

Okay CAAers, I think I've had enough Shojo manga for a while, and I'm looking for a different genera.

I'm looking for something surreal with a strong plot and equally strong characters. I'm not into action very much, but I don't mind some of it. And of course the general content concerns. (No blood, I can take some language, perverse scenes, ect)

I haven't read very much, so even a list of basics would be very helpful.

Alexander, if you're looking for strong plot and strong characters, i highly recommend Naoki Urasawa's Monster. it is a horror/mystery/suspense series that will literally hook you. the only problem i can name is that there are bloody/violent images. perverse scenes may become a problem as well. you could check out MSP's Monster anime review (i'm recommending the manga) for some backup info...

http://www.christiananime.net/reviews_anime.php?display=197

other possible series you could check out are:

Fullmetal Alchemist - some blood, but definitely worth reading

Mushishi - pretty much clean in all areas, good story and characters

Great Teacher Onizuka - very funny and original with a lovable cast of strong characters, contains a moderately high dosage of crude/sexual humor, fan service, and language

Hajime no Ippo - a boxing manga that dishes out a near-perfect combination of humor, action, and character development. there are some perverse/suggestive situations and crude humor; and the series itself is incredibly long (70+ volumes).

I'm afraid I'm going to have to backstab your suggestion there, Jon Jinn. Naoki Urasawa is indeed a master story teller, but knowing Alexander, if I can speak on his behalf, violence is a major turn off for him. For similar reasons, I also need to side-step FullMetal Alchemist.

Mushishi should be a solid option, though.

"God the great Creator of all things doth uphold, direct, dispose, and govern all creatures, actions, and things, from the greatest even to the least, by His most wise and holy providence, according to His infallible foreknowledge and the free and immutable counsel of His own will, to the praise of the glory of His wisdom, power, justice, goodness, and mercy."

"The very One from Whom we need to be saved, is the One Who has saved us."

"All of Christian life is ceaseless worship of God the Father, through the mediatorship of God the Son, by the indwelling power of God the Spirit, doing what God commands in Scripture, not doing what God forbids in Scripture, in culturally contextualized ways, for the furtherance of the Gospel, when both gathered for adoration, and scattered for action, in joyous response to God's glorious grace."
- Mark Driscoll

"Believers do not pray with the view of informing God about things unknown to Him, or of exciting Him to do His duty, or of urging Him as though He were reluctant. On the contrary, they pray in order that they may arouse themselves to seek Him, that they may exercise their faith in meditating on His promises, that they may relieve themselves from their anxieties by pouring them into His bosom; in a word, that they may declare that from Him alone they hope and expect, both for themselves and for others, all good things."
- Martin Luther

"I have to tell you first that I am ready to die. I have put my affairs in order. Your supreme weapon is killing. My supreme weapon is dying, because when you kill me, people all over Romania will read my books and believe on the God that I preach - even more than they do now."

I will second Mushi-shi, and I'm going to add 'xxxHolic'. When blood or gore is suggested, it is strictly surreal. The story is strongly based in Japanese folklore, but with some very fresh twists.

I would have recommended 'Ghost Hunt', but it fails for the same reason as Monster. It is less bloody, as such scenes are few and far between, but they are pretty graphic when shown.

Sadly, Mushi-Shi and xxxHolic are rarities in Japanese superjnatural stuff. You might be interested in Dokebi Bride, a Manhwa (Korean comic), but note that this series is more Shojo than ghost story.

XD

*note to self, BE MORE DESCRIPTIVE*

Sorry if my perception of surreal is off, but when I use it, I mean Alice in Wonderland or The Little Prince type of surreal. Not supernatural. XD

But I suppose I'll just make it simple. I'm just looking for a manga with a good flow in characters and story. Content advised again. Give me whatever you can think of. XD

P.S. And no Fish, I don't mind. I actually don't mind violence as long as it's not excessive. But thanks for the clarification.

Wow. When did this get picked up? I never heard about a licensing deal. Who ended up buying it?
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

The violence in Monster and FullMetal Alchemist isn't particularly excessive, just rather detailed, the later getting some mileage out of the fact that some of it's characters can regenerate back from death.

Well, I'm going to stick to xxxHolic, then. Characters are probably its strongest point, and it is definitely surreal. The story does actually seem to be leading somewhere, too (incomplete series, so this remains to be seen)

In a more comedic bent, 'Oh, My Goddess' is Shojo, but has the characteristics you are looking for, as well. It has been around so long, it has had many story lines open and close, characters grow and change, etc. etc.

Well, now that I've finally found this thread... ^^;

My favorite genres are fantasy and sci-fi... I like all types, though these days my favorite sci-fi has been "steampunk" type or Star Trek-ish. Haha, I don't know genre names. X3 I also enjoy slice-of-life type titles like Yotsuba, and romantic/shoujo comedy like Ouran. I like both serious and light manga, but I don't like titles that are too depressing.

I'm pretty tolerant as far as violence and religious/magical content go, but I dislike sexual content and nudity. (I can handle some mild innuendo or non-detailed nudity, though, like Furuba or Kindaichi.) As for swearing, I don't really care as long as it's not over-the-top. H and D don't bother me much, S gets on my nerves a little more, and too much F will stop me reading.

There's one series in particular - Elemental Gelade - that I'd like some feedback on. The story sounded like something I'd like, and the few pages I read seemed interesting, but I just want to know how it is with content-wise before I get myself into it... how would you guys rate it?

... Oh yeah. I'd rather not get myself into the super-long titles like Naruto - I already read one and it was annoying to get caught up, so I'd rather not do it again. xD

Manga I've enjoyed:
-Azumanga Daioh
-Yotsuba&!
-Angelic Layer
-Fruits Basket
-Fullmetal Alchemist
-Naruto
-The Kindaichi Case Files

Anime I've enjoyed (besides the anime of the titles above):
-Haruhi Suzumiya
-Ouran High School Host Club
-Anything by Miyazaki
