The Lantern Chronicles

You wake up in a cave. You can’t remember anything. You are holding a simple lantern made of glass and wood. It glows softly with a faint colored light. You are in a small room. A single brazier is burning on the wall, showing you that there is only one exit. A single tunnel disappears into the blackness. Only one way to go.

Our characters have no memory of who they were before they came to this place. The Substratum is an underground world that is cut off from the "surface.â€

Rules (subject to change)

- Please be serious about the RP. Don’t join just to goof off. Please, by all means, have fun, but be mature.
-
- No cursing is allowed at all. You can say something like “he cursed about the rain’ and I don’t mind if you use terms like “crapâ€

Q&A
Mister Frodo asked me some good questions about the RP, and I thought it was worth putting them here along with my answers so you can look over them. If any further questions are asked, I will put them here as well.

1. Do the surface dwellers know about Substratum?
I can't say much without giving part of the plot away, but the general populace does not know about Substratum, no.

2. Are there cities in Substratum?
They aren't exactly cities, more like provinces or territories. Substratum is fairly large, about the size of a mid-sized State. More about this will be explained in the RP.

3. Do people have jobs in Substratum?
Yes. Many people do.

4. Why does Tory have an empty lantern?
I can't tell you that. There's a good reason though, trust me.

5. Is the Arbiter a good or bad king?
Hmm, I would say he's pretty much neutral. He looks out for the best interests of the population, but he isn't particularly kind. You'll get a chance to see for yourself how he is during the RP

6. Are the majority of Substratum's residents hostile?
I would say the majority is not hostile, no. They understand that in order to coexist with each other there should be a certain level of peace. Most everyone is wary of each other, however. And there is a certain sect that operates under the unfounded belief that destroying another person's essence adds lifespan to one's own essence. Meaning they'll live longer.

7. Do the Newcomers to Substratum know about the surface world?
No. The newcomers know nothing, except how to do stuff like eat and breathe.

I really wish you would make this open to the public. I'd really like to join. But, you said not to ask for an invite, so I won't. But it looks really interesting.

I hope this RPG goes well! I'll be reading it!

Yes, I got invited! Thank you so much, Felix! I'll try my hardest not to mess this up. If I do anything wrong, I'm really, really sorry. I'm going to create my character now. If you think there's enough space later, once more people have joined this RPG and you have a better count of how many characters there will be, I might create a second character. But, here's my guy!

Picked Name: Clydd

Age: 15

Gender: Male

Essence Color: Blue

Position: Newcomer

Appearance: The following are the various parts of his appearance

Hair: Brown (his hair is short and ruffled)

Eyes: Brown-green

Skin: White

Clothes: Pants and a long-sleeved shirt.

Height: 5' 10"

Build: Medium (in other words, he's not fat, but he's not skinny either)

Personality: Clydd tries to be a good person, but, like all humans, he's sinful. His first instinct is to care about himself, but he's trying to put others in front of him. He attempts to befriend most people he meets. He carries his lantern with him for now, as he has no place to stay at the moment. He accepts where he is, but is curious about The Arbiter, and would like to meet the King. He is determined to survive. He is also very skilled at problem solving, able to look at things from a logical perspective and figure them out.

All right, that's my character! I'm really looking forward to this RPG. If I did anything wrong, you can point it out, and I'll go back and fix it. Anyway, thank you for inviting me, and I do think you have a good reason for not making this RPG open to the public. Can't wait till it starts!

Awesome job on your character. I really like him.
So... Accepted!
Don't sweat it, I'm sure you won't mess anything up! Just have fun and do your best. I'm not too picky, haha.

The limit is 2 characters right now, so feel free to make a second one.

Glad to have you on board, Mister Frodo!

So by my understanding, when a character wakes up in said room, they're wearing some kind of simple tunic-ish clothing (or maybe 'loin cloth' would be more fitting) and their lantern and nothing else? Just wondering.

Not neccessarily. They would be wearing whatever they would normally wear. It's just coincidence that the two characters shown so far are wearing simple clothing.
Our characters used to live on the surface, so I suppose whatever they wore there, they would be wearing when they wake up.

Hope that helps.

Ah, okay. See, I was assuming that the characters would be stripped of their belongings and given just enough to get by. Glad I asked XD

Well belongings, yeah. The only item they have on them when they awaken is their lantern. Their clothes could be anything, however, within reason that is.

I have a few questions regarding Substratum and was hoping you could answer them. Just some things that I've been wondering.

1. Do the surface dwellers know about Substratum?

2. Are there cities in Substratum?

3. Do people have jobs in Substratum?

4. Why does Tory have an empty lantern?

5. Is the Arbiter a good or bad king?

6. Are the majority of Substratum's residents hostile?

7. Do the Newcomers to Substratum know about the surface world?

I hope you can answer these at your earliest convenience. I think I may go and make a second character soon, but for now, I would be happy if you could answer my questions.

Thank you!

Helluuuuuu Hobo. I'm just posting to let you know I shall be joining this lovely plot outline-tale-adventure-mysterious-story-roleplay-thingie-majig. But. . . . Uh, I still have eleven days left on my fast, so I won't be able to just jump in right away. But I'm going to make a character. Because I can. *glomps you and runs*

And you better be on AIM today! . . . afternoon-ish.

I'm glad you have questions! I'll probably go back now and add this to my main info.

Let's see here...

1. I can't say much without giving part of the plot away, but the general populace does not know about Substratum, no.

2. They aren't exactly cities, more like provinces or territories. Substratum is fairly large, about the size of a mid-sized State. More about this will be explained in the RP.

3. Yes. Many people do.

And there is a certain sect that operates under the unfounded belief that destroying another person's essence adds lifespan to one's own essence. Meaning they'll live longer.

7. No. The newcomers know nothing, except how to do stuff like eat and breathe.

Okay, I hope that answers some of your questions. Glad to see you're joining, Danya!

Just droppin' off me bios. Tell me if there's anything wrong, or I need to change anything.

__________

Picked Name: Keriah (Ker-ee-uh)

Age: Looks to be mid twenties-ish

Gender: Female

Essence Color: A silver-blue. She's noticed that it's the same color as her eyes.

Position: Newcomer

Appearance: Jet black, soft, billowy waves of hair that fall just past her shoulders. Cappuccino colored complexion (as in she's black, not just sorta tanned) that pronounces her long, black eyelashes, making her comprehending, analyzing eyes pop. Her face is long and elegant, with small, yet expressive eyebrows, thin lips, and a straight nose. She has a slightly muscular, slim build, is about 5'7", and her posture is somewhat guarded, as if she doesn't want anyone getting too close to her bubble of personal space. She dons a white fitted t-shirt, brown worn leather pants, sturdy boots, white bandages wrapped around both hands, all the way up to her elbows, and a necklace with some sort of green stone in the shape of a maple leaf.

Personality: Logical and left brained. She's somewhat of a whiz when it comes to anything devoted to that side of the brain, and can also read emotions better then most people for some odd reason. She's a bit quick to judge, and is a very cold person, unless otherwise inclined. (As usual all of this is subject change in the RP, because my characters hardly ever come out exactly the way I planned.)

__________

Picked Name: Spry (Spr"I")

Age: 18

Gender: Male

Essence Color: Bright Green.

Position: Newcomer

Appearance: Fiery hair that he leaves in a messy, I-just-got-out-of-bed fashion, when not topped by his brown leather, beat up, turned around army hat. He also has side burns and a soul patch/chin beard. Deep, laughing, red-ish brown eyes. His face is kind, and seems to always have a smile of some sort (be it one of glee or mischief). He has sharp edges to his jaw, and his forehead and nose jut out slightly from the rest of his face. His skin is tan, and his body build is muscular, his posture erect and active. He wears a green long-sleeved shirt with a hood, and a black tunic over that; His khaki colored, beat up pants meet down at his sandle clad feet. He wears a leather cord necklace and a black wrist cuff. Has three piercings in his left ear.

Personality: Active; Nimble; Agile; Energetic; Brisk. He may come off as annoying to some people because of his cheery, witty, and at times mischievous nature, but underneath all the sugary, sweet foam, is warm, inviting cappuccino. . . . . Okay that made no sense. Let me re-phrase. Underneath all his antics he's a really caring, understanding sorta' guy. Don't talk to him when he's grumpy though, because he might unintentionally snap at you. (Again, subject to change)

Vunderful, darling, vunderful. I see nothing wrong to speak of. Well done ol' gel! You're accepted, good job on the characters. I like Spry.

Anyway, I'm going to be making a few very minor changes to the plot and a couple of characters. I'll be sure to let you know exactly what I change. It won't be anything major.

Hmm, you can scrap one later if you want. Heck, you can scrap both of them if you so desire, but that is not my wish, since I like both of them ^^ Good job.
My one minor gripe is as I said over IM:
The surface world is not Earth. It's quite a bit different than Earth, so there wouldn't be things like Shakespear or Math homework. But then again, I suppose the characters could have come from anywhere in the universe, so it's always possible.
I'd say you can keep them the way they are, since their past probably won't have much effect on their future. And I like the way you used it for their names.
Anyway, you're accepted ^^/

Picked Name: Rhen

Age: 19

Gender: male

Essence Color: green

Position: Newcomer

Appearance: Black, somewhat disheveled hair that goes just over his ears, green eyes, green shirt, black pants. He's of an average height and build. Not weak looking, but not very muscular or strong looking either.

Personality: Not going to say anything, '
cause I always get myself into trouble trying to stay in character when I do this, so I'll let Rhen kinda develop himself.

Alrighty, guys. I'm back from my week at camp, and just about ready to get this started. I'm still waiting on a couple people, but by the time this gets approved they should be ready. If not I'll just hold off on jumping in a little longer because I don't want people to get behind.

Also, the RP is no longer invite only. Anyone can join, they just have to get my stamp of approval first. MWAHAHahahahaha... ...ahem.

So I'm gonna go ahead and submit this for approval. I had a few more ideas while I was at camp, and I think it's going to be pretty fun. I hope you guys like it, too, and thanks to those of you who joined! ^^/

Name: Te-Mira
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Essence Color: Multi-colored. Sometimes it's one color that switches one by one. Other times the colors swirl around eachother all at once as the flame.
Position: Newcomer
Appearance:
Hair: is black, very full, and shoulder length.
Eyes: A deep color, based on the light they seem either; dark navy blue or deep purple.
Body Build: Scrawny but tall. 5’10
Atire: A very long, nilon, shirt that stretches a bit below the middle of her upper legs. The shirt has a black nouveau butterfly pattern on the front, and back, behind a faded green back round. Long black pants would compliment the shirt if they weren’t covered in dust. She also has no shoes.
Personality: Does what makes her feel good, cares mostly about herself. But when Te-Mira finds something that she’s passionate about, she’ll even let herself be inconvenienced to succeed.

ooc: I'll make the other character soon Dan.

silver_wolf, thanks joining! It would be nice if you could add a little more under the appearance category, like her hairstyle or what kind of clothes she would wear.
Other than that minor thing, you're accepted!

you really think i should? i mean, i dunno... i'd have to think up a new character 'n everything... and keep up with what's going on... and then i'd have to try to stick to keeping in character 'n everything... and then i'd have to...

oh what the heck?!?!

here ya go! ^^

Picked Name: Gemma
Age: Early teens (10-14-ish)
Gender: Female
Essence Color: A golden burgundy
Position: Newcomer
Appearance:
Eyes: She has deep reddish-brown eyes. The shade of her eyes change with her emotions. For instance, if she’s been crying, they’re brighter than usual.
Hair: Gemma has mid-back length, jet-black hair. One of the few possessions she had with her when woke up in this Substratum place was a tiny star hair-clip with a silver jewel in it (whether or not its real, who can tell?).
Attire: Gem woke up wearing no shoes at all; not even sandals so obviously she's gonna keep an open eye for something to slip on her feet (she has really big feet for her size). She also wears black slacks that were a bit tattered at the bottom. She wonders why they’re so worn, but quickly disregards that because she can’t remember anything anyway. Along with the slacks is a reddish-brown rope-type-thing with a clasp that is apparently supposed to be a belt. She has a black silky-like-fabric blouse-type-shirt with a metallic tint, which is long sleeved and goes a few inches past her waist. Aside from the jeweled hair-clip, the only other jewelry on her is a slender, silver chain on her neck.
Skin tone: Not pale, but not dark. Like… a rich sun-tan color.
Height:5’5â€
