Petshop of Horrors

Does anyone like this manga? I checked out the first book from my library. There was a lot of... blood, but that's why it's a horror, right? What do you guys think about it?

I LOVE Petshop of Horrors! I have the anime, and I have the first four volumes of the manga.

Yes, it is horror. It's not horror in the traditional sense, though. The storylines tend to deal with some kind of lesson of human existance - everyone (who survives) an encounter with Count D and his strange pets learns some kind of lesson about life.

There's blood, particularly in a few of the storylines.

Also... yaoi.. I wouldn't say full-on yaoi, but there is a definite shounen-ai element. There is a tension between Officer Leon Orcott and Count D that's rather difficult to put into words. They have a mutal facination with one another, but Leon is definitely straight. Count D, however... we don't really know. (Then again, we don't even really know if he is human).

I do give you a HEAVY warning for Volume 3. There is a storyline in there, "Dessert" which involves Count D having a relationship with a man, that leads to... interesting stuff going on in Count D's shop. I'm not sure if it's true yaoi/shounen-ai, though, as the man kind of turns out not to be human, and D wanted him as an addition to his shop... still... um... if you are easily offended, don't read it. Not only is that particular story especially creepy (it involves cannibalism), it also is the closest PSoH gets to full-on yaoi... and it's pretty close.

Just some warnings. The manga is something that I personally like (mythical animals and a creepy feel), but it's not something I think the Admins at CAA would ever officially recommend.

I actually accidentally skipped over number 3...>>;; Oh well, I'm not missing anything, am I?

I've fallen in love with Petshop of Horros. It's such a nice deviation from the normal manga series, and the art is truly droolworthy~ ^^

It's basically about a man named Count D who runs a petshop in Chinatown (can't remember which city...NY, right?) that sells exotic/dangerous/more often than not mythical creatures to people. The only catch is that there's a contract that comes with the pet, and if any part of it is broken, the results can be disastrous.

Another reason I realized I really enjoy this manga is that, even if it isn't Christian, many of the stories show us SO MUCH about human Nature. The ones with P-chan and the killer bunnies come to mind...

The Chinatown of PSoH is actually in New York! Hahah. I think the manga author either purpousefully made up a fictional "Chinatown", or they got their directions wrong.

Anyway... Volume 3, if you get it... get it for the Teddy Bear story. "Devil". That was a really good, thought provoking story. It's about an old woman, teddy bears, and Nazis... I'm not sure I can explain it further without really spoiling it, but.. man... that was a GREAT story.

Now, the story I was talking about, "Dessert" (about at Totestu, mythical Chinese beast), I actually liked it BECAUSE it was so creepy. I didn't find it quite as thought-provoking as "Devil", but I personally rather liked it. I'd warn most away from that particular story, though... beause it was the creepiest story in there so far, and I can see where it would be very off-putting - with both the cannibal theme and the sexuality.

But, I wouldn't throw out Volume 3 if you are a fan just for that... The other stories in it were neat... "Diamonde", "Desire" (especially good story), and "Devil" (WOW!).

Just.. be warned about "Dessert".

Actually there isn't just a "Chinatown" in California...they're all over the place. I haven't been to NY, so I can't say if there's one there, too, but there are Chinatowns in LA, San Francisco, and...Seattle, I think it was.

Back on topic: ...maybe I'll, uhhh, read volume 3 at the bookstore or something. ^^; I like creepy, but I'm not sure if it's one I'd want to keep.

One more thing, what's the difference between yaoi and shonen-ai?

Shounen ai translates boy love. As in, boys hugging/kissing/being not dirty. Yaoi is a more extreme form of boy love...as in....doing married couple things. >>; Yaoi is an acronym for something but I can't and would care not to remember.
