Theory - CAA people don't like PC games

Have a video game or or VG review? This is the place to to discuss it! We also accept discussions of board games and the like, but SHHH! Don't tell anyone, OK?

I have official software that lets me play the NES Castlevaina/Contra (Castlevaina/Contra collection) and some Genesis games (SEGA smash pack) on PC. I have some older games like Doom/Doom II, Starcraft, and Warcraft. I like games like Nethack (a dungeon hacking RPG, it has nothing to do with the internet or computer hacking, which is a good thing) which use text based graphics, but are very complex (not to mention the fact that many of these text based RPGs are freeware, Nethack included). My PC collection is very unusual, but I like both console and PC games, so I play some console games on PC (official lincensed store bought ones).

pc rpgs are lacking , there is no question. I've played through baulders gate games a few times and the other AD&D stuff. Paperback novels based on this have charicter development, these dont. the casts of your back up charicters have bland little cleche backstorys, its really just an excuse for all the D&D nerds to live out their fantasys and join a silly crusaid to kill some undead, or whatever.
The pc interface dosn't add even a snootch more realism to charicters or enviroments. A game were you make up your own charicter at this point on the time line can never compair to a pre made storyline. It just cant. And i know there are lots of more games like ..... um ..... summoner (ok game but its still kind of boreing) Nox, Diablo.... dont get me started there, aside from being a little more then slightly evil, all it basicly boils down too is demonic pokemon. Were you go and collect all the best equipment.
Were does the pc shine in games? it was already said FPS'ers and RTS games. you want to talk about unreal tourniment or warcraft games then you definatly are in the right. but not rpgs. Morrow wind..... (trys not to vomit) Just watching video clips from it, i felt my soul being sucked out through my eyes. I think i have better things to do then bleeding my lifeforce out in front of my computer thank you.

That's all fine and good unless you're running a 466Mhz Celeron with a 32MB Radeon (without any T&L Shading so many new games won't run well or at all, i.e. - NOLF2).

Even some older games have problems on my system, I've got Emperor: Battle for Dune and can't play it. Smaller maps are fine, but as more stuff is in play the game slows way down (1st time I got to the last battle, but last time I loaded, after a video driver update I couldn't play more than a few maps).

I've still got plenty to play on it, including a load of Theif/Theif2 missions on a CD around here and a few other games that I haven't started yet (or finished), but I'll never see anything as cool as Project Gothem Racing or Morrowind run on my PC.

it's possible to get a 800Mhz system for less than of an X-Box. and it'll run most games.

i can remember myself crying of joy after getting a 32Mb TNT2 for my 233Mhz to play Diablo 2. the day i was SO happy that at least it didn't have 10fps anymore... now i had 40fps! i was so happy...

well, it all matters by tweaking stuff. today the computers are so much better in management field than in the old days where you had to work with himem.sys and emm386.exe with edit.exe or edit.com files :P stupid Gates for making the memory limit of 640Kb...

I'd still have to replace much of the rest of the system, this being the main reason I've gone the route of the Console system till I get ready to buy a whole new system.

My Radeon is a PCI (no APG slot in my current system), so we're talking $60-100 for a decent card, I currently only have a 4GB HD (which is usually 3/4 full without any large games installed), so I'd have to throw down another $60-100 for a new HD... and so on... (memory, case, etc)

Nope, next time I'm doing some research, buying pieces and making the system myself (no pre-fab store-bought junk for me), this way I can pick-and-choose my components, and if I do it right, I should have a decent upgrade path in the future.

Till then, I'm having plenty of fun playing Halo, Project Gothem Racing, JSRF, etc.

Where do you count those of us who play old console games on our PC? :) I've got a four year old computer and no money so i'm limited to freeware, shareware, abandonware, and demos. I play with my Catecumen and Mechwarior 3 demos quite a bit, and some day will spend the three hours to download a few other demos i've found on the net.

I forgot about a couple of text Christian games i found that i am still trying to get out of th fisrt rooms in

I've done the demo run a few times.... usually when I'm broke and wore out my other games I'll start pulling out the old demo disks (ones I got with old PC Gamer mags, those nice Incite disks... searching through other CD games, thanks Edios :D).

In fact, that's how I found the Theif series.

What also helps is that I've got an EB nearby which has lots of used PC games.... I've found quite a few older PC gems for under $5.... Theif Gold for instance I found in the store a week after I played the demo off an Edios disk and realised how awesome the game was. The package was a whole $2.99, talk about killer.

Some of my other gems I've gotten that way where:

Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight - $0.99
Outcast - $2.99
Nocturne - $4.99

There are a few others that where a bit more or I got on sale for almost as cheap. Several of my cheap games where around the $10 mark.

I very seldom a the time would pay more than $15 or so for a game, I simply didn't have the money for it.

Along those lines, thrift stores sometimes will get some older software in, and they usually sell them pretty cheap too.

i guess i'm those kind of people who likes latest games, fast. except when i'm broke right now, which then i can't buy anything, so i go back to old games. gees, i cannot believe how many hours i spent playing SimCity2000 since i first saw it when i was so little. and Lemmings. oh, the memories.

yes, i used to play console too. i wouldn't mind getting a console. but since i already have an established game machine, i don't think i'll be spending anything to get a whole new console.

Can you imagine trying to play some of the upper levels of lemmings with a CONSOLE?!? That would suck. I guess there are some times where a PC really is required...

games on PC look sweeter than on console.

...if you have a good enough computer to make it look good.

that and i cannot stand anything under 800x600 on a BIG screen. even if it's small, i'd prefer clearer, high refresh rate of a computer.

and PCs don't have much games as consoles? please. only 10% of games actually on PC are on shelves. the rest are all long lost, forgotten, but it just so happens some are really, really good. even now, Tyrian beats any space-shooter game i have ever encountered in my life.

I think gaming is impractical in any case ^_^ ::ducks::

Well, for one, games are bloody expensive. In the case of PCs, video cards are also a pretty penny.

In both cases, you have to upgrade often, but especially with consoles. >:[ I dunno about anyone else but I can't afford to spend some $1000 every year on just games. By the time the console price gets to be reasonable, they freaking put out a new one! I'll stick to my old NES and SNES games thank you.

BTW, I don't give a flip about graphics ^^; 2D is just peachy for me.

oops made a new thread by accident

Postby Bobtheduck » Sun Nov 02, 2003 10:14 pm

Nooo! I wrote up a nice sized reply to this and it never made it here! what happened?

ok... found it... I accidentally clicked "New post" instead of "Reply" so the message is here, read it there and respond here, didn't mean to make a new thread...

Oh, and the high resolution monitors always make me tired... Even 1024x768 (what I'm at) makes me tired... It hurts my eyes... TV doesn't hurt my eyes... I dont' know why...

change you refresh rate. it should be higher than 75Hz, or else it'll kill your eyes. hey, if i see anything at 60Hz it'll kill me too.

so go to Display Properties, go to Advanced, Settings, then click Monitor tab, and choose your refresh rate. mine is 85Hz, and it's much better than 60Hz.
