This was brought up the other day in conversation, so I'm asking you all...IYO, what is the saddest song ever written?

This one is a bit sad and VERY deep. Johnny Cash's 'hurt' gets my vote. *Can't think of much more really*

I'd vote for "Say Goodbye" from Skillet. It doesn't sound sad, but if you read the lyrics, yeah.

What would you do by City High. The lyrics aren't exactly clean per se, but there isn't any cursing or stuff. It's just incredibly depressing to listen to. :1

Project 86's From December, Snow Patrol's Run and Chasing Cars top my list, but the saddest musical number would have to be Marty O'Donnell's Unforgotten from the Halo 2 Soundtrack (the longer version is on Vol. 2).

'Amy in the White Coat' by Bright Eyes is really sad... but that's just because I can relate a bit.
A lot of Bright Eyes stuff is amazingly deep and sad. the song, "It's Okay, We can Still be Friends," is like...pure emotion. You can even hear the singer sort of degrading to nothing...you can tell he's deeply sad.

The Sky is Crying, by Elmore James. At the very least, the saddest blues song ever- which makes it the saddest song ever.
Actually, that's a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song, which Cash pulls off very well. But Trent Reznor's lyrics are very deep and heartfelt. As messed up as they guy is, his stuff is music in the truest sense- a raw, poetic expression of his true feelings.

I think the Johnny Cash version of Hurt feels more sad than NIN... NIN version has a totally different feel to it and while it is depressing it sounds more like someone on drugs while Cash's version sounds like some old guy at the end of his rope looking back over his life and that worldly stuff mean nothing. Don't care much for the NIN original at all... Johnny Cash's version, IMO rocks.
