Best rivalry in sports?

Postby Saint Kevin » Sat Feb 14, 2004 10:36 pm

What do you guys think is the best rivalry in sports?

I cast my vote for the Detroit Red Wings vs. Colorado Avalanche. Man I hope those two meet in the Western Conference Finals.

In the NBA, during the Magic Johnson and Larry Bird era, the Boston Celtics and L.A. Lakers had a great rivalry.

In College Basketball, I would go with Duke vs. North Carolina.

In MLB, I am guessing the Yankees and the Red Sox will always have a rivalry.

In hockey, yeah, I agree with Saint Kevin. They always seem to have great teams every year, a prerequisite for a great rivalry.

I'll let others chime in.

Texas A&M and University of Texas (Aggies n' Longhorns)...that rivalry is bitter down here. The two biggest universities in Texas go against each other neck to neck on everything. Heck it got to the point where kids from Dobie High School (who had longhorn colors-orange and white) wouldn't talk to kids at my school with Aggie colors (maroon and white), which was pretty retarded. So that gets my vote.

Also, the Houston Astros and the Chicago Cubs. What baseball fan hasn't heard of this one?

The Leafs and the Habs. It's as old as the NHL.

Also, the Toronto Argonauts and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Yeah, I'll 2nd Ashley's nomination. It is so bad that sometimes I think I'll just go for Baylor or Texas Tech.

I don't these these rivalries are ever gonna subside. Especially the Sox and Yankees after last year. In a somewhat related note, how would you like to be that Cubs fan that cost his team a trip to the Series? Man, I feel sorry for that guy.

British football (soccer) is dreadful for this kinda stuff -- there have been many post-match riots between supporters of opposite teams. Some people take football too seriously. Things are improving though...

I cannot believe I did not see this until now. I was born and raised in Florida for most of my life... as a big Gator fan.... I'll let the "evil gators" comment slide.

However, Shinja is right. That is a very intense rivalry.

But there is another rivalry I think is worth mentioning in collegiate sports: Michigan vs. Ohio State.

I could swear that song was "hail to the victors." Oh well. The 'Skins are gonna be really good next year, especially now that they got Portis from the Broncos and have Joe Gibbs as their head coach. Scary.

Football: My college against your college any day.

In Alabama, the college football rivals are Auburn vs. Alabama.

Broncos and Raiders is pretty big here in Denver.

How could they be, they're always in the Stanley Cup Playoffs?

Nevermind, I just looked it up that they haven't won a cup. They haven't even been able to get to the finals since Scotty Bowman coached them in 1970. I guess since neither of us were even born then, I could see your lack of enthusiasm. I really feel sorry for the Blues now that I just found that out. :(

There is one more sports rivalry I should mention before I graduate.

The Georgia Tech vs. Georgia rivalry has also been fierce for a very, very long time. I never got into it, however.

Hmm...just a little bit of gravedigging going on. Well, in light of the recent turn of events in the NBA finals, I guess I could throw the Pistons vs. Lakers into the mix of the best rivalries since they've faced each other in the finals three times now.

BTW, the Lakers won the finals over Detroit in '88, lost to Detroit in '90, and lost again this year. So, in a finals versus record, that's Detroit 2 - Lakers 1. Go Pistons, further proof that defense wins championships (even in today's NBA).
