Right now a Bible study group of which I am a part is reading through the fasting chapter of Richard Foster's Celebration of Discipline. It has been helpful. One thing that it has encouraged me to do is fast for a week, or even a month. Unfortunately, my mother will not allow me to fast for longer than a week, so I guess that that will be my limit for now. And she wants me to wait till the summer... Anyway, his book is a practical teaching on fasting.

I hope you'll be careful not to hurt yourself. Once I fasted for three days (not fun), however, a week sounds a little... strenuous. I'd suggest making a commitment on a daily basis, rather than by-the-week, (e.g. check if you're feeling energetic enough to continue a day or two into the fast, and then deciding if you feel you can continue on for another day or not.) I'm certain no one would want you pushing yourself farther than is healthy! :)

The mid-month fast was good, and God ended up helping me with a few questions I'd been wondering about.

Well, I guess I'm posting to re-affirm my +1 to the membership count, since so many people seem to have mysteriously vanished. =(

[Aside] Dot Hack Item King? Very impressive! :thumb: After all the work it took to get through the last dungeon, I couldn't even bring myself to 'try' for the items list. =\

Hello all from one of the many who seemed to have mysteriously vanished.

Just want to let you know that I'm still bopping around, mostly in the wallpaper forum. But must confessed that I haven't really met the fasting thing since I signed up for this.

I'm gonna try to do it this coming 1st of the month. So please keep me in your prayers that I actually do this for the Him & not to just say I did it.

All best wishes,
~Dove~

Well, I don't fast much either. Seems like the last two times I fasted, I have gotten sick shortly thereafter. Might be coincidence, but I probably live what some would call a life of significant stress, so maybe fasting is not a great idea right now for me.

Yes...the .Hack Item King award. 800 things to find. Those last 2 were the worst, because for a while it seemed like I could only get them from story-line trades that were long gone. Some help from diverse folks on the web led to where to find them (again). The actual award is rather goofy, considering it is the hardest thing in the game to do. I wonder if the designers figured no one would try it? Well, off-topic enough. PM me if you need to know more, Lionheart.

Well, I'd like to hear from those who fasted on the first. How did things go?

I find Lent to be a good time for fasting-type activities. I often give up a certain food item or such for the duration of the Lenten season. I say this not to brag, but rather to encourage others to pursue this rewarding curbing of the Flesh and time of contemplation.

Hello all from one of the many who seemed to have mysteriously vanished.
That would be me as well.

Much has happened eversince my absence but never mind that, I'm back. I'm quite rusty in praying and fasting but I suppose that's a very good reason why I should come back.

I've considered fasting during Lent and have two things in mind. Eventhough I haven't done too well in the beginning, I've decided not to give up and to continue trying my best from today onwards.

Good to see everyone here holding the fortress through prayer!

I'm not really well known around here but since were all technically supposed to be brothers and sisters I guess I'll toss my hat into the fray. I'll start reading the boards and praying for people tonight.

Welcome, warriorking500 and Kai Robin! It is good to have you with us.

Since I was unable to fast on the 15th, I am fasting today and tomorrow. I have not fasted for two days in a row in the past, so I hope that this goes well. So far it has.

Welcome Kia Robin & thanks for joining!

Well, I didn't fast on the 15th, kinda forgot till the end of the day. But I'm figuring to just stick to 1 day a month for now.

I think the only thing I have been fasting from in Lent is CAA. Raven (daughter) has taken up a new sport (archery) and with that on top of a more hectic schedule (wife has a new job), all I want to do when I get home is crash.

I've got some serious Prayer Thread catch-up to do.

Well, as my posts here too often begin: It's been such a long time since I have been on CAA!

Anyway, now that summer is here fasting will be more convenient. I am looking forward to fasting on June 1.

Well, how did things go?

I fasted from food again and took extra time to read my Bible. It wasn't particularly special, but was good. I am looking into doing an extended fast sometime this summer.

Already the 15th approaches. I'll be at a camp on that date... should I fast on the 15th anyway, or should I fast before I go?

Well, I have decided to fast for an entire week. I have never fasted for this long before. Actually, I was hoping to fast for longer, but it wouldn't have worked in my schedule. Anyway, I have been slowly modifying my diet to ease into the fast. Then I won't eat from the 20th to the 27th. Prayers are appreciated.

Well, God has been "reminding" me that I need to pray more. And this seems like the best site to encourgage formal, frequent prayer, so I'm back, hopefully for a long term.

So, AnnaMae...did you survive the week long fast? And how exactly was that supposed to work? No food or what? Thus by discussion about survival.

I wanted to go for only water, but my mom insisted that I drink juice as well (you know how mothers worry). I wasn't hungry all week, which defied my expectations; sure there were occasions when I wanted food, but it wasn't real--painful--hunger. I was kind hoping to experience dire hunger...

The spiritual aspect was a bit of a letdown also, actually. Devotional books and classical works promise that when you fast God will draw near to you, etc. That didn't happen for me. Such is the story of my spiritual journey, so in retrospect I am not surprised. Virtually all of the Christian pop culture, ancient writings, and people in my life have grand ideas about what God will do in my life if I meet certain qualifications (which I do), but those things never happen. God doesn't follow the "rules" in his dealings with me, which I wouldn't mind except that many of the "rules" are desirable to me.

But I didn't mean to summon a raincloud or anything. Fasting is still an admirable discipline that I recommend to everyone.

Perhaps you might want to read the new book out that is Mother Theresa's diary. She spent something like 50 years trying to draw closer to God with little success.

God, of course, can "get close" to us anytime he wants whether we are fasting or not. I think that the best mindset for such endeavors is to not expect anything. Be open to whatever happens, even if that is nothing. Sometimes you have to do some things (fasting, prayer, etc.) because you should, not because you are expecting something out of it. A sense of duty, as it were. Sounds like you have that figured out.

I've heard about that book, and am considering reading it (the question will be how far up on my priority list of books I will put it). I heard, actually, that Mother Theresa didn't want her diaries published after she died but people did anyway. Interesting ethical question there, then, as to whether or not to read it...

Oh, I suppose since I am going on word of mouth and have not read it personally, I get to face the same question. Of course, lately after I get home from work all I want to read is manga.
