Most disappointing anime you've watched

Akira was a tad overated, but still I like it on some level.

The most dissapointing anime I've seen was the first Ghost in the Shell movie. Great atmosphere and interesting ideas, but not really "much".

Ghost in the Shell: Innocence Project- As much as I liked the first GITS movie, the latest offering was simply tedious. Great animation and music though.

Otogi Zoshi- This actually started off very well. Unfortunately, the show went off the rails in the third volume.

Otaku No Video- Not completely an anime, since it also contains live action. Supposedly a classic spoof on otakus, but in the end it just comes off as wretched and insulting.

Tsubasa- "gotta catch 'em all!"
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

Final Fantasy Unlimited - poor plot, reused animation ("I've chosen the correct sand for you")

Last Exile - I completely fell in love with this series, but in the end it just crashed and burned like a vanship with no claudia fluid. Why all the plot holes? Why the rushed ending and seemingly incomplete ending? It has actually bothered me for days and I've scoured fansites and wikipedia for answers and for some type of closure. You broke my heart, Last Exile. T_T

Hmm, and I was thinking of watching that next, sometime soon.

Angelic Layer. A show I can say with some certainty I wasn't "Technically" disappointed with because that would presume I had expectations of it to begin with. Beyond Pokemon, I've never been able to understand these Animes centering around specific sports events or whathaveyou. All these people pay, fill stadiums to the brink, to watch dolls fight. Religiously, almost. Granted, I'm noticing an eerie similarity to American Football, but that's besides the point. The only real saving grace is that one creepy lab coat dude, and personally, that's not enough.

7 pages worth of disappointing anime... Good grief. Do you guys like talking about stuff you dislike that much?

Anyway, the major one that really comes to mind that I've seen a lot of is Martian Successor Nadeisco. The transitions between humour and drama felt strange and awkward at best. And really, Full Metal Panic pulled this off better.

I liked Shaman King until it went off into filler-land and suffered a severe drop in quality.

I'm not really sure what my opinion on Escaflowne is. I keep hearing about how great it is, but I wasn't that impressed when I rented some of the DVDs. I don't know. It might not be my kind of show, even though I generally like fantasy.

And I'm inclined to agree with Fish and Chips about Akira, even though I've never seen any of it.

I actually enjoyed Akira, now that everyone mentions it.

Also, I neglected to mention a perpectual disapointment of mine: any.hack anime.

Actually, Fish and Chips, the ending isn't all that anti-climatic. I thought it did a good job of resolving things. I'd tell you more, but I don't like to spoil things when I like a show this much.

Ditto, ditto, and uh, ditto! I also felt this way about Betterman. It had a similarly intriguing start and a 'beyond confusing' ending.

S-Cry-Ed was a MAJOR LEAGUE Dissapointment! I mean, the V/A's were brilliant, the animation was GREAT...but the plot and the dialogue made me nauseous!

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one! It's not like I had really high expectations from that anime, but I thought that it would be much cooler than it actually was.

Oh yeah, forgot about that series. Yeah, I was really hyped because the VHS cover said something like "Voted Best Anime of the Year by some magazine!" And I really liked the first couple of episodes. Until they killed off the coolest character and then...it was just boring. :\

Exactly! S-Cry-Ed was just a bunch of yelling, screaming, and the plot was very confusing. The main character, Kazuma, was just so annoying and didn't evolve as a character. Even up to the last episode...he was exactly the same! Complete letdown!

Final Fantasy Unlimited- The fighting is sooooo boring, all the main guy does is pop in, put three.... pill things into his huge gun.... arm thing and blow the giant monster to smitherens. Either that, or he will stand in one place and shoot at it.... that's it, just shoot at it. No moving around, or aiming at different body parts, he just shoots at it, without moving at all. Yeah, dumb. Not to mention the plot is dumb, and the villains the dude, supposedly destroyed, keep coming back out of now where. The plot was interesting, but only for 2 episodes.

Naruto- I never particularly enjoyed Naruto, it was extrememly hyped where I live, so much so many where claiming it as the greatest anime ever. Needless to say, I was disappointed. I won't delve into it, since almost everyone here has already covered it. Though, Rock Lee is a pretty cool character, none the less.

And that's about it. Unfortunately, I haven't taken any real big chances with anime. I mostly go with stuff that I've read in manga format and liked. When I do, most of the time, I find that I really enjoy the anime. (Read or Die T.V., Scrapped Princess, Record of Lodoss War etc.)

Just out of curiosity, has there been a specifically "anime you thought would stick but turned out great" thread lately? That'd be a nice antidote to our rampant bad vibes.

Naruto- I like the manga and look forward to reading it. But the anime... I swear they took for episodes of talking and thinking before they actually fought Zabuza and Haku.

One Piece- Horrid VAs and the animation is kinda... bleh... Manga is way better.

Steam Boy- Animation is awesome but... dang.

Advent Children- ...I don't think I'll ever get over it.

Wolf's Rain - there was a point about midway through this series where I seriously thought it was the best anime I'd ever seen. Then came the..
pointless cop-out reset button ending that I might have actually been able to stand if it weren't for the fact that Blue, the best character in the entire cast, didn't come back...
...and it was dead to me.

Fullmetal Alchemist - I watched about 40-45 episodes of this, I believe, before I realized that I hated it. All that time the hype, and the undeniable buildup of suspense and drama had been carrying me along. Then I realized that I found the protagonists insufferable, all the characters I actually liked were dead or shuffled off into the background, and the plotline was one contrived twist mysticism-enshrouded fate after another. So I looked up spoilers to satisfy the invest of curiosity I'd regrettably put into the show and see if it would redeem itself in the home stretch - and I thought the ending was the dumbest thing I'd ever heard. And I now consider this the most overhyped anime of the decade.

Avenger - When I read about this in Newtype, I thought it looked really interesting. Unique concept and setting, intriguing characters. So someone gave it to me as a gift for Christmas of 2005, and I discovered that the concept and setting are barely utilized, the characters hardly develop beyond the little bio paragraphs in the Newtype article, and despite the fact that the plot theoretically revolves around gladiatorial combat, the fight scenes are dull.

I thought of another one...

X/1999...

Something so epic that it was just... unecessarily bloody in some parts, and then it like, so looked like it was going to have this giant amazing ending, when in reality it fell apart right when the credits hit :/ One of the worst endings I ever seen :/ Yeah, they tried to cram everything CLAMP had at the time into one movie but yeesh! Much too pessimistic and death everything, might as well be something that Shakespeare wrote :/

I'm not sure if this counts but the ending of Last Exile disapointed me, the show was really awesome then it just seemed like the rushed the ending and left a lot of things unexplained. (this is just my oppinion so please fans don't hurt me)

I'm going to put IMO on Most disappointing anime you've watched.

This is going to be a long list.

Blue Gender-

When I first started watching it. I thought this anime wasn't bad and then as it drag on, it got wrost. I kept watching it to see the ending and it was a very bad ending.

Gundam 0083-

I felt that this Gundam UC storyline anime was overhype. Lt. Burning and Anavel Gato were the only people that I cared for in anime and I did love the music in it.

But, I couldn't stand Nina Purpleton and how she acted. Kou Uraki bug me, because he had no backbone from start to finish.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam-

Gundam meets street Fighter. Nuff Said!

Oh! Super Milk-chan-

IMO, this show wasn't funny at all.

Tenchi in Tokyo-

The story started out good and then the writers must have got bored. The only cast members that I cared about was Ryoko and Sakuya.

Inu Yasha-

I tried to watch this and I just didn't care for it.

Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke-

I watch those two movies and I didn't like them and didn't understand all the hype about those two movies.

Immortal Grand Prix tv series-

I love the six min eps that was showed on CN. When I watch the tv series and saw that they made into a mech racing anime. I just couldn't bare to watch it anymore.

Trigun-

I just didn't like this show. I didn't like how it went from comedy in the first half of the series and then it went all drama at the end.

I know that Tenchi has a mix of both comedy and drama, but the writers mix both in well. I just felt that they didn't mix the comedy and drama all that well in Trigun

Outlaw Star-

What can I say about this show, I feel in love with it at first. Then I waited for the ending and it give more questions then answers. I was very disappointed with the ending.

Vision of Escaflowne: A Girl in Gaea (the movie)-

Being a fan of Escaflowne the series, I had to get this anime and watch it.

Escaflowne the movie is the most disappointing anime that I have watched.

They took a series that I love and turn it into a 98 minutes sad, dark and creepy movie.

I couldn't stand the character design of David Bowie, uh, I mean Folken in the movie.

The only good thing about the movie was the music and a little better mecha design of Escaflowne in the movie.

One Piece, Bobobobo, Ghost in the Shell:SAC(I love the movies but the show ugh! was a bore), Inuyasha(why is it that this creator did so well on Ranma 1/2 and Maison Ikkoku that she make a Dragonball Z like show that is so boring and repetitive), Naruto, but only the fillers, the rest of the series I love especially Naruto Shippuuden, Tsubasa Chronicles

I agree with that somewhat. But I hated Sakuya. And the villains were... weird.

Trigun: can't exactly say why. It was a little weird for me. I haven't seen it in a while, so I can't go into further detail

Paranoia Agent: It was really weird! I didn't like it at all. The whole idea of a kid going around hitting people with a bat was odd enough, but then he somehow knew who was having problems and attacked only them. That was weirder...

Nominated Victims of the following categories:

#1) "It's the BEST Anime in the universe...not." The Over-Hyped Award: Akira & Ghost in the Shell movie
Don't get me wrong; the animation and storyplot for both titles were quite good.....it's just that my expectations were way higher when I picked them up.

#2) "Huh??!! That's IT?!!" The Bizarre Ending Award: sCRYed, X/1999 the Movie
I actually found the animation, characters and storyplot of sCRYed entertaining enough to the point of sitting through a marathon. But, I couldn't believe the ending. As for X/1999 movie, I was flabbergasted at how ridiculously easy someone was defeated.

3) "Ehhh....I don't get it." The Guessing Game Award:
Utena The Movie & Evangelion (in general)
Haha...I don't have a problem admitting that I'm not smart enough to figure out what exactly happens in a title sometimes. These titles are not bad but sometimes I feel I spend too much time trying to figure out the “Who? What? Where? Why?â€
