Favorite LIVE action Directors

Postby The Doctor » Mon Feb 12, 2007 8:25 pm

Who are your favorite LIVE action directors?

Mine are:

M. Night Shymalan, Robert Rodriguez, James Cameron, Robert Zemeckis, Robby Henson (he directed the Christian film "The Visitation", based on Frank Peretti's novel. Quite good, say for the ending.), and Michael Landon.

Yours?

M. Night Shamaylanaysnan may be an exceptionally good director. But he is certainly a terrible writer. =p

As for my favorites, I have quite a few:

Stanley Kubrick, Park Chan-Wook, Kim Ji-Woon, Kang Je-Gyu, Bong Joon-Ho, Orson Welles, Park Chan-Wook, Akira Kurosawa, Alfred Hitchcock, Park Chan-Wook, Penny Marshall, Steven Spielberg, Billy Wilder, Park Chan-Wook, Park Chan-Wook, and Park Chan-Wook.

Oh, and Park Chan-Wook. XD

Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek 2, 4 and 6!)

Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek 3, 4, and 6)

Cecil B. Demille (The Ten Commandments)

Robert Wise (Star Trek: The Motion Picture -- Yeah, the movie wasn't that good, but he still rocks in my book!)

Stanley Kubrick (Even though Clockwork Orange freaked me out!)

Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: First Contact)

Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Eat Drink Man Woman)

I'm not too familiar with that many directors. I know a few of the most famous ones, like George Lucas, Peter Jackson, Ron Howard, Alfred Hitchcock, etc., but I don't feel like I've seen enough of a variety of movies from any of them to say that any of them are my "favorite" (well, maybe Hitchcock). I will say, though, that judging by the two movies I have seen directed by him, Christopher Nolan certainly has my attention.

I forgot to mention Werner Herzog; he's a difficult and at times truly weird director, but his movies range from interesting to unforgetable. Two of his Amazon epics, Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre: the wrath of God (a very disturbing movie) are must sees, but also deliberately slow.

Steven Spielberg. So varied. The man did E.T, Jaws, The Color Purple and Schindler's list...what a repertoire.

Alfred Hitchcock. A master with a distinctive profile, to boot. Plus he even had his own TV show. (wait, so did Spielberg...Animaniacs.)

Christopher Nolan. I've only seen Batman Begins and The Prestige, but daaaang.

Gurinder Chadha. Also only seen two of her movies--Bhaji on the Beach and Bend It Like Beckham. Really good at balancing comedy, romance, drama, and racial issues. (in England. Wheee!)

Akira Kurosawa. 'Nuff said.

Shame on you ML for not listing Nickholas Meyer! He was the man who brought Star Trek back to life!

Need I remind you, that if we didn't have Nick Meyer, we wouldn't have KHAAAAAANNNNNN!!!!!!!!
