Most disappointing anime you've watched

Postby rocklobster » Thu Feb 15, 2007 6:42 pm

For me it was these:
  • Ninja Scroll--I don't think I need to explain.
  • Super Milk-chan--I could feel my brain cells wailing in agony
  • Soultaker--I really tried to like it but, in the end, I couldn't.

There was this one anime, I forgot the title, but it had mamoru in it. It seemed like it had potential. The only problem was that the main girl was just so clueless that it became a pain to watch it. She didn't even know when she was in danger. ><

I believe that's called Paranoia Agent

Black Cat. I had REAAALLY high expectations for it since the manga is my second fav, but they butchered it.

Disclaimer: No offense intended towards any fans of the following shows!

Mar and Prince of Tennis were both pretty sub-par, in my opinion. I dunno... I started watching them when they simultaneously debuted on Toonami, so I suppose you could blame their mediocrity on the dub version... Then again, these titles seem to be aimed at a younger audience, so I just might not find them mature enough for my tastes.

Another one that I found utterly atrocious was Blue Gender. I could barely get through the first episode. There are too many disagreeable aspects for me to mention.

The show is called Kage Kara Mamoru. I saw a few eps. of this one a while back, and I also thought it could've been a better ninja/comedy title.

I had high expectations for Comic Party, but it didn't really hold up when I actually watched the first volume. It was pretty boring and not knowing the fan-comic or anime convention lingo probably led me to feel this way about the series.

Stratos 4 was a title that I thought was going to be a cool, rocket girls in space type of anime. Unfortunately the fanservice towards the end really ruined the series for me.

Ghost in the Shell (any of it): The animation is gorgeous and the opening themes are amazingly cool, but I'm sorry. The show is just too darn boring. XD

ONE: This OVA that I found. The animation was nice, it seemed clean enough, etc. But again, the boredom was killing me. XD SO slow.

Naruto: I had heard lots about it. I checked it out subbed the night before it aired on TV. Not my cup o' tea, really.

Tsubasa: For the same reasons I disliked the manga (besides the lack of clarity in artwork). Tooo sloooowww.

Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch: I was really enjoying this one quite a bit, until those two antagonists were added in (Me-Me and She-She, I think their names were). In spite of the fact that they were the "bad guys", they still really just didn't sit well with me at all. If the series ever got licensed, though, I'd probably still buy a few of the DVDs with episodes that came prior to their entrance. They just kind of ruined the latter parts for me (even though the latter part of season one does have its highlights).

That's all I can think of for now, but if I find more, I'll be sure to post 'em! :)

1. Prince of Tennis: Now I realize there are droves of fans of this show but...in my opinion...it was just plain boring from the get go.

2. One Piece: I just dislike the show. It's not even because of 4Kids. I just don't like it.

3. InuYasha: I got so much hype about it from certain friends of mine...and then...don't get me wrong, it's good. It's just not all that.

Rune Soldier. After skimming 8 or so episodes, I can safely say my favorite part of the show was the opening with the cleric chorus in the conveniently out of place radio station. Not much else, really. Fan service and silly episodic-ness kinda ruined it for me.

Also, the original Hellsing adaptation. I'd read the Manga and heard the Anime was different, but that didn't bother me. What did was, well...most everything else I saw and/or read about it. The first duel between Alucard and Anderson was so watered down, and did the Vatican even have anything to do with the plot beyond a few episodes? Good thing the OVAs came along to rescue the series.

Geneshaft. I admit it's a guilty pleasure sort of deal where I like the show, but it's really not good at all. There are some amazing segments in the show, but the overall quality just isn't there.

Amon Saga was terrible in every respect. Derivitative of every sword and sorcercy type fantasy, rubbish animation, story, boring characters - the list goes on. The box said the duration was 75 mins but it was 43 mins instead. Although that was more a blessing in disguise!

Akira was not good. Yes, it was well-done in terms of the animation quality and complex story, but the graphic violence was over the top (and not necessary) and I didn't sympathise with anyone character.

Akira:
This was around the time I was reading Anime Invasion/Inside alot. Every issue was "Akira this, Akira that, Akira is teh bestest anime evaaaa!!" Tried it for myself and thought "What the heck? o_0"

Blood the Last Vampire:
It was pretty good through it, but just... ended way too soon where it should've continued on at least an hour longer :/ It was really good up until it ended :/

Cat Soup:
...I thought it would be amusing to watch but oh my gosh, I want that hr and a half of my life back T_T

Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door:
This was around this time where forums were all "Bebop this, bebop that" so I tried out the movie cause it was available for rent and it was ok, but not super amusing...

Whisper of the Heart:
I know there's lots of fans on here, and it's a title I really tried to like, but I just couldn't...

Saishuu Heiki Kanojo:
Just didn't satisfy myself from where I personally wanted it to go. I was expecting some REALLY grest stuff from this, but some stuff turned me off from liking it less and less, and then the ending just killed it for me. I reccomend the live-action movie of it though^^

DearS:
Cute characters with sort of fanservicey clothes in some pics. I wasn't expecting it to be as bad as it was :/

Lupin III: The Secret of the Twilight Gemenai:
This is when I learned that Lupin 3 that's not directed by Miyazaki, isn't that great :/ (He also directed 2 episodes of the second season, which were still available to rent on VHS, so I gave them a go while they were still at the store^^ This was where the Castle in the Sky robot first appeared^^)

I think it's the taint of nostalgia. For a lot of people, their first anime title was Akira, and it was like nothing they'd ever seen in animation (er, unless they saw Heavy Metal, but anyway). So they kind of hold it in higher regard than it deserves, because it was their exposure to the medium. The same is also true of Ninja Scroll...although I personally feel Ninja Scroll is at least an above average movie, unlike Akira.

Anyway.

To answer the question, a few titles come to mind...

Air - Yeah, I know, there are a lot of fans of this on CAA. I actually absolutely loved the series...until the Summer Arc started. Then I went, "What the crap happened to this anime?" It was downhill from there for me. Meh. At least the theme song ruled.

Nuku Nuku DASH! - I was a fan of the original Nuku Nuku, so I was eager to get my hands on this series. I watched it and thought "Okay, so it's a retelling rather than a sequel...I can live with this." Three episodes later I couldn't take another minute of it. Way too boring and unoriginal.

Final Fantasy Unlimited - I saw the first episode via a promotional DVD from Newtype. I loved it. I started watching the DVDs. After about the middle of the second DVD I completely lost interest. Just wasn't that good. Though I do wish I'd gotten to see Mog.

Aishiteruze Baby - Eh. Yeah. Started out cute, but not enough was going on to captivate me. Once that emo girl showed up I was through.

Ghost in the Shell: SAC - It wasn't bad. But it certainly wasn't good enough to make me love it. Or even continue watching it. One episode and I was done.

Sailor Moon SuperS - I love Sailor Moon. I'm a huge fan. Great show. But SuperS is the weakest link of the chain. No Outer Senshi, too much focus on the pink brat, and contrived plots to ensure that Chibiusa/Usagi were always at the same place so they could transform together made this saga the worst of the bunch. Also this season started the trend of disposing of the supporting characters. A few good episodes in the bunch, but as far as I'm concerned all it is is a lead-in to the superior Stars.

Naruto - 'Nuff said.

If you're referring to Paranoia Agent...

I think I'm going to cry. =\ I <3 Paranoia Agent.

And the Akira movie doesn't do justice to the 6 volume Manga. Trust me on this. The Manga was incredible. The movie, while well animated, was disappointing.

And I loved Cat Soup XD Surrealism is totally my thing.

I'm sorry to say that I whole heartedly agree with you (And me being a huge Prince of Tennis fan) The dub butchered the original anime (Whereas the sub is incredible) I just wish they could've done better. Atleast the manga is really good XD

I'm a fan, but I can definitely see your point. It's billed as an action show and it really isn't. It's a political intrigue drama. If you want regular action, you will not find it here. They mostly just talk.

For me, the most disappoint anime was Escaflowne.
I thought it a good enough anime up until the 18th or 19th episode or so. I can't remember exactly where. But at that point, it seemed like the series was wrapping up nicely and I figure one or two more episodes would od it. Then I realized there were like two DVD's left to watch. What were they going to do to fill the time? Completely wreck the series, that's what. My friends and I added a new phrase to our lexicon:

Escaflwneing the Ending - Mangling the ending of a show so badly that it leaves you wondering if the show's creators ever put any thought into the resolution of the climax until after production of those episodes had already begun.

Also, I felt FLCL was a bit of a disappointment to me. Granted it was a good series and I did like it, but I didn't find it funny at all, which was a huge let down after I had heard so many people say it was the funniest thing they had ever seen.

Giant Robo. Man that show sucked.

Also Grave of the Fireflies was pretty funny but the dramatic parts fell flat.

And the End of Evangelion would've been better if it were more like the last two episodes of the anime. 90 minutes of crayon drawings and recycled sequences of people sitting in chairs.

You have a weird sense of humor, Josh. GOTF is not supposed to be funny. Anyone who can find kids starving to death funny really is sad.

For me.

Shamanic Princess: The DVD said "A must for all CLAMP fans" and the reviews I read raved about how amazing it was, then I actually watched it and thought it was just ok. It grew on me more as time went on, but initially I wasn't a big fan.

Blood the Last Vampire: The first time I saw it I thought it was waaaaaay too short and the story was too simple.

Akira: Most overrated anime ever! *explodes* ^^

Evangelion: I started reading the manga first and it spoiled me, it was just so much better than the anime.

Geneshaft is better if you've read Brave New World. As for FLCL, I share your disappointment. Man, I wish people wouldn't hype this one so much. :bang: (especially CN) :mutter:

Last night I watched the forst four episodes of Angelic Layer. I was pretty disappointed. I loved the manga because it is was so cute and clean, but while the anime kept alot of the cuteness it was not very clean.
When I was certain he was going to kill me, my mind went blank, and I didn't have any hope anymore. And the only thing I could do was scream my lungs out. I felt so helpless, I couldn't even bring myself to believe someone might save me. Then you showed up, Al. And I realized that if we don't take care of each other, then no one else will. So I'll do anything in my power to get our bodies back, even if it means being the military's lapdog. And we'll just have to hope our powers are good enough to help us rise above our own limits. Cause we're not gods. We're humans. Tiny, insignificant humans who couldn't even save a little girl.
