Sushi and Tempura

Postby Kenchii » Sat Feb 28, 2004 6:29 pm

I havn't seen a thread yet on Japanese food yet, so here it is! Personally I love sushi (handrolls, rolls; california, shrip, penn. rolls) tempura, and tempura ice cream. What really brought me into liking these foods are really the culture of Japan that I love, and my friends. About 7 of my friends I live around are Japanese, or half-Japanese American, and they love sushi. They brought me in to the new taste back 3 years ago, and I love it! I never cared much for fish, but sushi I love! Otherthen sushi, I love sticky rice balls, and other snacks/delights my friends mom makes ^.^;; Do you like Japanese food? and what kind? :)

I like vegetable sushi a bit; California rolls aren't half bad either. Tempura ice cream is the best! Actually, my favorite asian food has to be Filipino egg rolls. Those things are awesome. Beyond awesome, even.

Unlike most anime fans I know, however, I'm not enamored of Japanese culture. I don't even have any Japanese friends (asian, yes, japanese no). I like Japenese food--bits of it anyway--yes, but I also like all kinds of food from around the world. But I'm going on a tangent now...

Here's a question to tack on: where do you get your Japanese (or asian food in general) kick? For me it's Ichibon, this great Japanese restaraunt and sushi bar not far from here on the coast.

(Kenchii I hope you don't mind me broadening the topic a little bit...feel free to ignore me and go back to strictly Japanese food only  )

I kinda like japanese food,.
what I like is crab cakes, sushi with soy sauce and japanese horse radish (forgot the name for it) and takuyaki.

what I don't like is... tempura ice cream?? kinda sounds nasty.

EDIT: I posted almost the same time as ash, so to answer her question...
I get my asian food from the filipino store two miles away from my house, a twenty minute drive if theres no traffic.

I can't get enough of tempura icecream! Humm I get my Japanese food from a couple places. PK Center is a small Japanese corner-store I go to for snacks for school, and nori to munch on, Ichii is a expensive resturant where I eat tempura ice cream and other dishes, and my Publix has some sushi rolls too. (which I am eatting now! )

I'll answer your question anyway, ^^;;
well, I like Chinese food; chicken and rice w/ brown sause, sticky-rice, eggrolls, baby ribs, and the fourtian cookies!

There's a take out place not far from my apartment I plan to patronise a lot more since they have some very nice o-bento specials for good prices. (The interesting part is that this particular Japanese restaurant is run by a family of Koreans, but the cooking seems totally authentic.)

Augusta, Georgia, has a really good Japanese resturaunt, but since I don't live near there, I get most my Japanese food at home-- it's cheaper that way too. There are probably tons of Japanese resturants that I haven't even heard of in my state yet. There are mostly Chinese resturants where I live. I will eat almost any food from Japan except for Tofu and anything that isn't the muscle part of the animal. Salmon Teriyaki has to be my fav.

I like regular fried ice cream I get from Mexican restaurants, but have never tried the tempura kind. As far as I know, I've never had a piece of sushi I didn't like. Every once in a while, I have some Japanese fast food from the little Japanese place at my school's food court (Wok n' Roll). I've tried their teriyaki and yakitori chicken a couple times, and am getting much better at using chopsticks since I began eating there. I have yet to try their sushi though, I'm pretty broke, so it's usually a treat for me to ever eat any sushi.

i like sushi, but sashimi i love better, especially salmon and sea urchins. for more filling courses, a good big bowl of ramen or a bento with gyudon are great for me.

the Philippines has about a gazillion Japanese restaurants and my dad was saying that you couldn't find cheaper Japanese food anywhere else, even in Japan, lol, so we do get to eat a lot.

Lucky you Swordskill, wish I could get some cheap Japanese food. Then again, I guess I could make it a point to eat lots of it if I ever get to visit your country.

Oh, I forgot ... gyoza is a major failing of mine. Yum. I love those things, especially when fried just right. *licks lips*
