Windows XP Start-up Issue

Postby Myoti » Sun Jan 28, 2007 1:57 pm

When my parent's computer boots up, it says:

Stupid Computer wrote:The following file is missing or corrupt: C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
The following file is missing or corrupt: C:\WINDOWS\DBLBUFF.SYS
The following file is missing or corrupt: C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS

Type the name of the Command Interpreter(e.g.,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM)
C>

From what I can tell, I think I need to find a way to restore the boot-up files or such, but I'm not sure how. I have the Windows XP installation CD, but I've had no success yet in fixing it (and, obviously, I'd like to avoid having to wipe it down).

Suggestions?

This is going to sound like an odd question at first until I explain, but are you sure that it's Windows XP that they run, and not some other version of Windows? None of the three files mentioned even exist in the Windows folder on my XP drive, and only one even exists anywhere on the drive. But all three exist in the Windows folder of my 98 drive.

If you're not sure, then assuming the command prompt works, enter winver (or ver if that doesn't work) and it'll tell you what version it is. Depending on what you come up with, I might be able to help you then. :)

That's something I expected; they upgraded from a 98 to XP, so what they have NOW is XP. It seems odd that a problem with an old version would become such a big deal, though.
