Final Fantasy 3 (famicom)

Postby Bobtheduck » Thu Jan 22, 2004 1:18 am

The last FF not released in the US, who's played it, er, in a questionable method... Or who knows Japanese and has played it on the Famicom disk drive? Either way, it's worth discussing, and it's the last game yet to be released here officially.

I personally thought it was ok. It was the only one of the Famicom games I came close to beating, but I got stuck in the mountains with that jumping ship... I came soo close... It's rediculous how many forms of transportation there are in that game. It introduced moogles to the series, and Class Changing. It also was the first game to remove the "attacking the empty space" thing in the first two games... (man, was that annoying getting a lucky hit with your first character, and the rest of them attack the empty space where the monster used to be) Some of the innovations people associate with the Super Nintendo games really started on FF2 and FF3 (the real FF2 and FF3) on Famicom. Anyhow... Just thought I'd see if I was the only one here who's played this... I hope it gets a US release...

I didn't really like this game... but it was better than a lot of NES games. By the way, emulation of this game is now perfectly legal, in case you were worried. Character changing is okay... I probably would have enjoyed the game had I done a bit more of it (I've basically just started it). But for some reason I didn't enjoy combat in this game, which means that levelling up was annoying.

The combat in 3 was essentially the same in 4 and in 5 and it 6 and in 7... The only games to really stray from it were 2, 8, and 10 (haven't played 9, so can't say one way or the other) It wasn't active time, but that's the only difference between the battle in 3 and the battle in 4.

Anyhow, while the plots in 2 and 3 are improved over 1, it still gets somewhat repetitive and isn't quite as epic as 4... 3 was the first game to get really creative witht the landscapes, though... I love the floating world in 3...

If we should play 1 and 2 to see where everthing started, we should play 3 as well... a lot of final fantasy trademarks began in 3. Not only that, but the chirpy "Have you ever seen me playing in the sunshine" song is in it! Ok, so most of you probably don't know what that is... Still...

Im pretty sure ive played three and thought that it was horrible

I may be wrong is this the FF with that chick as the main character (or at least for the beginning of the of game) im sorry but I really need to play a male main character with a cool sword and cool hair (FFXII is the exception)

You can't really identify a main character, though Terra does come somewhat close. However, let me assure you that many other characters are quickly added, and they receive quite a bit of focus. Besides, with her Esper-flying around, she spends a fair amount of time not in your party.

That would be 6, and I can't believe you said that... 6 is my favorite in the series. The story in 6 is much more interesting than the "save the planet from dying" stuff in 7... Cloud's just... Cloud is like Raiden... He's supposed to be this tough guy, but he's just a whiney kid. The whole thing with the pivitol moment in FF7 was amazing... I cried for days. However, it sorta went downhill from there, and I personally hated the ending (though I loved the last battle.)

UC was right. There is no main Character in FF6. Celes is as close as it comes to a single main character, and Locke as well... Terra is not even required to beat the game... There are so many interesting characters in FF6. Locke, Celes, Leo, Shadow, Relm, Stragos, Cid... I guess FF7's characters were interesting too, but I just really hated the whole "save the planet thing" and I despised the ending...

All of this is off topic seeing as how this is to discuss Final Fantasy 3, not 6. Final Fantasy 3's playable characters don't have personalities... They all look exactly the same and they're very one dimensional. It was just like the first game in that manner. Also, they're all male, but they're kids. I think they were trying to make them 1 dimensional character so you could project yourself on them. I thought the story that SURROUNDED what you did was interesting, but the characters weren't. FF3 was the game that introduced the class change system that made it into FF5 and into FF Tactics... (of course, Tactics Class change system was a modified version of "Ogre Tactics" class change system) and it probably holds the record for most vehicles. There are like 3 or 4 different flying ships, not to mention the other vehicles.

It is the last game to yet be released in the US legitamately.

Somewhat inspired by this thread, I started up a game of it. I have very little free time, however, so I doubt it will go very far. At this point I am still leveling up my characters, in their various classes. The class system is a bit interesting, but I don't like it as much, in that you're slightly penalized for levelling before you get the better classes. But I'm not going to quibble.

This is the only Final Fantasy I was never very interested in, but I'll give it a whirl if it get's released in the US.

Know what would be nice? Another Origins/Chronicles/Anthology game containing Final Fantasy 3 and Seiken Densetsu 3. That would rock.

(If any of you have never played SD3, you MUST go get yourself an SNES emulator and download the fan-translation of the rom)

I loved this game. Didn't beat it, but had Sabin's final special move, Bum Rush. Plus he had the Offering and Genji Glove combined, so he could attack 8 times in a row.

interesting game, though the storyline was kinda lame. somewhat similar to ff1, but now you have the job system (and CHOCOBOS & MOOGLES!!!). I like how they made it "1 weapon = 1 hit, 2 weaps = 2 hits". I needed 3 fighters and a red mage just to get through the first part lol

Music wise, it was great. My only complaint is on the battle themes, which weren't very "serious".

Strange how you go through 4 different airships tho

Once again, that would be "Final Fantasy 6" not 3... It was called 3 in the US on SNES, but they corrected it for the PS1 release, so even in the US it's not called 3 anymoer.

The topic at hand is FF3 for Famicom.

Last generation of NES games often had better sounding music than second Generation SNES games... Compare "Mother" aka Earthbound to the SNES sequal "Mother 2" which ALSO got called "Earthbound" because only one prototype cart of the NES game got out... Anyhow, the music on the NES game sounded much better and more dramatic... The music sounded horrible for the most part on the SNES Mother 2, aka Earthbound.

READ THIS BEFORE POSTING

We speak about FF3, not FF6. If the game had basic character names, and if you didn't start out with all four characters, it's the wrong game.

Meanwhile, I continue to not really play, as I'm too busy. Maybe some day.

That is, it's legal in America. A new law stated that "alternate forms of functioning software" are legal if the system the were originally created for is "considered obsolete or is no longer readily availible." If you want details talk to oldphilosopher, or search the forums.

So NES emulation (and probably SNES, though I'm staying back) is now legal.

So in theory I could play SD3, Mother 1, and FF3 legally?

It is tempting but I just don't know.... I was really hoping for those games to be ported to the GBA...

Mother 1 may come to the US, as a port had happened to GBA in Japan and Mother 2 (aka Earthbound) had a strong cult following. Final Fantasy 3 will only arrive if new interest in it is brought up in Japan to make it a NEW project for Japan. New projects for the US are only considered after new projects in Japan... Basically, the only thing the Japanese companies usually do for Americans is translate... Therefore, if there are not Japanese ports to modern systems, there won't be a translation to English it one had not happened allready.

Konami had been a partial exception to the rule, in as much as they actually released some American versions of Games before Japanese, or at least developed them first. Square, along the same lines, released upgraded versions of games in the US (I'm sure about FF7, not sure about some others) before releasing an even more upgraded version in Japan (like they ALSO did with FF7... Our version had the other Weapons (Ruby, um... the other ones) and the other upgrade included more background for Zack.)

As there are few things I'm really wanting to play on NES, I probably won't be leaping at the chance for NES emulation right now. I would like to finish FF3, and also Mother... I got about 2 or 3 hours into the game and couldn't go any further... That sucker is hard, and unlike the SNES game where you can be entertained by the Psychodelic stuff, you just have that static pic of the enemies to look at!

If SNES emulation was legal, and I could find a good Download site, I'd be all over that one... There were hundreds of Gems on the SNES... A lot of excelent RPG's, many of which never saw American soil, and simulations that were really interesting and groundbreaking... The SNES was the Pinnacle of 2D video gaming... 2d stuff on the PS just didn't have the same feeling to them... PS was all about the special effects and the 3d and such, and with few exceptions, there were no longer games like you found on SNES... Even ports of SNES games (FF4-6, Tactics Ogre) came up short. The increased power made the inferiority of the system they were made for show through, and the loading times that were non-existant in cartridge based systems were often intolerable... Often times, just as happens in modern day computers and even X-box, the new power in the PS1 was abused, leaving us with very flashy mediocre games... The SNES represents for me the height of creativity, and that height which I want to reach when I start making games... PS2 developers, having the least powerfull system to work with, have to figure ways to work around those limitations and are getting more creative, but I want to take it a step or two further... Especially if I'm going to be making any sort of Godly impact with my games.

I would like someone to let me know for sure if SNES emulation was completely legal in the US.

The problem is that the language used is ambiguous. There really is no specific mentioning of systems. Sure, an SNES is obsolete, but you can still find them. As of yet, there is no precedent.

But I wish I knew as well. There are a lot of good SNES games.

In any case, even if that law does not allow us to download NES roms we don't own, it does allow us to buy the japanese version somewhere and then download the rom and hack it (it allows for changing of code for outdated software that we own) so that means that all of those SMB hacks and FF hacks and the fan translation of FF3 is legal now! I gotta look at the bright side of it, and gotta get myself an FF3 Famicom game...

So we're talking about Final Fantasy 3 right? As in the third series according to the Japan numerology; if so I've never played it.

Final Fantasy 6 or known to American gamers who played it on SNES years back, what a game, I loved every waking moment of it. Go GO-GO!

I know this is late, but this is my only post. Saw it on a google search and the first post frustrated me...

It said:

The Freaking Japanese version was in Cart. form for the Famicom. I'd know since I own it (and have for years...)

1. Read the rest of this thread... You are alowed by law to reverse engineer software in outdated formats that you own originally... If you download an NES rom you own, there is no law against it. It's not pirated because you are allowed to have it in alternate forms.

2. So it was in cart form. Big deal. Actually, I don't know whether it may have been in both cart and disk, and why do you let this bug you so much? I mean, try watching g4 and hearing people repeatedly say "The first Metal gear game on the NES" and "the sequal on the NES" and "Solid Snake comes back in Snake eater" Then there's hearing that all the final fantasy games starred children (children were characters in 3, 4, 5, and 6, but the main characters of 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 were all adults) among other things...

Of course, are you even COMING BACK? I consider hit and run corrections to be just a couple steps away from trolling, but whatever. So it was a cart. Forgive me master. Let's discuss the game, or let it die (this was sorta old, wasn't it...)
