I really enjoyed the early Simpsons when it was more of a social commentary. It used to be the most intelligent fictional show on television. I don't get to see the new stuff very often, but I haven't been very impressed.

Major Simpsons fan... It's made by a large team of writers, so some episodes seem mocking of Christianity, and others seem very sincere and more respectfull... That's because they have Christians ans atheists on their writing team. I think this show is great, but of course it's flawed.

As for the new episodes, they ARE getting tired and a lot is getting repeated, but it is and always has been both a social commentary and satire, as well as always having been a show about rapidfire irony... It hasn't really changed in that respect, and the new episodes are fine for the most part.

I think it's funny most of the time.

There are Christians helping to write it?????

I love the Simpsons! I've really started watching it the past year or two. My brother owns the first two seasons.

I was going to write something a bit like this but it wouldn't have sounded as good.

Basically I was a HUGE Simpsons fan about 3 years ago, then I saw the episode where they go to Africa and the Rhino hatched out of the egg. It was then that I realised the simpsons had jumped the shark and become lame like so many other programs...

I do still like the originals: The one where Bart joins the Junior Campers is good.

I used to like the Simpsons, and I suppose I still do. I watched them faithfully right up until I went to college, and since then I haven't seen a single episode. I do like them.

One of my favorite lines is from the episode where they go to Washington, D.C., and Bart and Lisa get lost in the woods. They are found by some mountain people, and Lisa tells Bart to pray:

Bart: Lord, please smite these mountain folk...

Yeah, the first several seasons were great but you can't deny that it seems to be lacking something lately. That episode with Marge accidentally getting implants was just about the worst one they'd ever had. Seemed like the writers were really scraping the bottom of the idea barrel. Still though, as long as we're swapping favorite quotes...

Grampa: Movies were better in my day. For a nickel you got two movies, a cartoon, a bag of popcorn and a whoopin'. Kept your mind on your business.

By the way, Grampa once made my dad snarf his cream soda.

Hmm... some of my favorite quotes that haven't been said yet...

Lisa: I'm no theologian, I don't know who or what God is exactly, but I do know that he is a force more powerful than Mom and Dad put together, and you owe him big!

And from the Camp Krusty episode...
Lisa: Are we going to die Bart?
Bart: We're all going to die Lis.
Lisa: I meant soon.
Bart: So did I.

The Simpsons are a hoot... I generally don't take the episodes that appear to knock Christianity too seriously.... it's somewhat of a good look at how dumb we seem at times to the world IMNSHO.

And funny.... anyone see the one last weekend with Simon? Laughed all the way through the credits.

Thought the H stood for "Honest"

Anyway, Simpsons's have a contract until 2005, which at that time will discontinue the show and premiere the Simpsons Movie.

The last couple years have been pretty poor for the show. Old jokes, nothing fresh anymore.

Favorite episodes are when they do spin-offs of movies.
"Destroy all that which is evil, so that which is good may flourish" - The Boondock Saints

"Man creates dolls in his own image. If God exists, it's possible that we're all just dolls to him." - Evangelion (episode 22)

Then it would be "Not So Honest Opinion" ... sounds a trifle disingenuous ;) (unless you meant in IMHO, where I guess it could be read as that, too).

I'm a big Simpsons fan, but as many others have pointed out, the series has generally gone downhill in the last few years. However, the first six or seven seasons are hilarous! I get a kick out of the parody and satire.

My favorite quote pertains to Ralph's academic aspirations:

"When I grow up, I'm going to Bovine University!"
(After watching the kiddie documentary on how cattle are "processed".)

I'd say that I'm a simpsons fan, but I've watched so many of their episodes that if I watch more than two episodes in one day I think it's the worst show ever . . . until the next day.
I will not waver, doubt or falter for all truth in this world has been written into the book here at my side.

I also like Troy McClure's quote from that film:
"Don't fool yourself Timmy, if a cow ever got the chance it would eat you and everyone you love!" (cue dramatic music and close up of the cow's sinister black eyes)

my favorite ralphi-sms, can you guess which episode they came from?:

1."my dad likes to eat donuts!"

2."ms. krabappell?? I can't disect the worm, the worm jumped in my mouth and I ate it!"

3."me fail english? implausible!"

4."the leprechaun tells me to burn things..."

5."my face is on fire!"

6."Miss Hoover: Children, I won't be staying long. I just came from the doctor, and I have lyme disease. Principal Skinner will run the class until a substitute arrives.
....
Ralph: What's lyme disease?

Miss Hoover: You see, class, my lyme disease turned out to be [spells it on the board] psychosomatic.
Ralph: Does that mean you're crazy? "

7."Ralph: ... and when the doctor said I didn't have worms any more, that was the happiest day of my life. "

8."Ralph: [skipping with his diorama] I beat the smart kids! I beat the smart kids! I -- [trips] I bent my Wookie. "

I like using Ralph Wiggim quotes whenever possible. I currently have this one in my signiture on two other message boards:

"This is my sandbox. I'm not allowed to go in the deep end, because that's where I met the Lepurachaun. He told me to burn things." __ Ralph Wiggim, "The Simpsons"

I also like "My cat's breath smells like cat food."

And from the episode where he befriened Bart (same ep as the Leppurachan quote) and they snuck around an abandoned prison and were looking at the electric chair... then someone was going to get executed in it - "That man's going to smell like pop tarts!"

I haven't been following newer episodes of the Simpsons, but I used to watch it all the time. I stopped for a while due to church pressure, my church thinking it was evil.. then, I decided for myself whether or not it was "so evil" and watched it again. I don't think it's a good show for kids, but for adults and teenagers, it's great. I find the social satire witty and hilarious, even the making fun of Chrsitians eppis... those are so exagerrated of how the world thinks of us, and how we behave sometimes.

Ned Flanders: "Harry Potter and all his little wizard friends... burned in Hell for practicing witchcraft!"

Tod and Rod: "YAY!"

I think we need to step back and laugh at ourselves sometimes.

I've become much more of a fan of "Futurama", though. "Futurama" started out strong and stayed strong, and they mix the social satire with parody of everything science fiction. :thumb: Me likey!

Yeah, some of the best quotes come from Rev. Lovejoy. My favorite of his quotes comes from the episode with Homer as Paul Bunyan, when the meteor is hurtling towards the village.

"God has sent this fiery kill-rock to show us His love!"
