great-grandma to be taken off ventilator

Postby yukinon » Mon Dec 25, 2006 3:56 am

My great-grandmother is currently in the hospital, unresponsive, sedated, and breathing only on a ventilator. On the 26th, we will be taking her off the ventilator and allowing her to pass. Beforehand, those of the family who wish will go to the hospital to say good-bye.

I have a lot of mixed emotions about this myself. The woman I loved died a long time ago, in my opinion, and was replaced by a bitter, bossy old woman.

However, this is my grandmother's mother. She has been taking care of her mother for years, often at the expense of giving love and attention to the rest of the family, and I am worried about her.

My uncle, whom I also have a somewhat shaky relationship with, is taking this very hard. He is in bad health himself, and cannot make the trip to say good-bye.

But most of all, I worry about my aunt. She is mentally handicapped...a 30-something who operates at around the level of a 5-year old. She and my great-grandmother are extremely close. At the moment my aunt knows nothing beyond the fact that she is in the hospital. We will tell her after all is over. She's never lost someone close to her before. I don't know if she'll understand. If she does, I don't know if she'll be able to express it. I don't know if she'll lose her innocence.

And I'm so tired of all this.

Dear God,
Please surround yukinon and her family during this difficult time. Fill them with the assurance that you will welcome yukinon's great-grandmother with loving arms into a place where she will feel no more pain and will be the person who you created her to be. Please be with yukinon's grandmother as she transitions into a new stage of her life. Help her to find constructive activities to fill her time, and aid her as she rebuilds relationships with the rest of her family. I ask that you also be with yukinon's uncle as he grieves not being able to say goodbye. Fill him with faith. I also ask that you mend yukinon's relationship with him. And, dear Lord, please take yukinon's aunt into your arms and comfort your dear little child. Give the family wisdom and clarity as they try to explain what happened to her. Use this painful time to draw the entire family closer together and refine them. I trust that you will give them the strength to endure. In Your Name I pray,
Amen

look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!â€

I don't think that I can agree with those actions... I'm not for euthanasia-like actions, but a choice is a choice afterall that you have all made... Might've been a bitter old woman that she was "replaced" with, but still a person none the less and I just don't think I could ever bring myself to pull the plug on anyone, even if they are in a vegetable-like state...

Just sharing my opinions on this, but I'll definately be praying...

独り 子 を 信じる 者 が 一人 も滅 ひない で, 永遠 の 命 お得る ため で ある。

Thank you so much for your prayers.

And for the record, Tenshi, I had no say in this decision, and opinions are not really what anyone needs right now.

She passed at 4:26 PM yesterday. I was in the room with her.

My grandma seems to be ok. As usual worrying about everyone else before herself, but my Mom and I are here to give her the backbone to take care of herself as well.

My uncle will try to come for the funeral. I worry about it...he hasn't traveled in a long time.

My aunt still does not know. We will tell her after the funeral arrangements are made. I am staying with her while that business is conducted. So far, she's still caught up in the excitement of Christmas.

And Ryu, you have no idea.

Thank you so much all.

Sorry... I know it's a tough time and all... Did I know that you didn't have a say? No I didn't. And no, no one really needs opinions on anything, but people do express how they feel about issues. I guess I just didn't want to sound... supportive in a decision, which I didn't believe was the right thing to do. Once again I apologize, and it was in my prayers though...

Okay, I think that's enough going back-and-forth between you two, Tenshi no Ai and yukinon. Tenshi no Ai has apologized somewhat, and it should be left at that, yukinon. You've both expressed your opinions on the matter more than once, so drop it.

In the meantime, I will remember you and your loved ones in prayer during this difficult time, yukinon.
