Diagnosed with depression...please help

Postby girlninja » Tue Nov 21, 2006 6:52 am

hey guys,

Well i have been diagnosed with depression from my doc. I am kinda at a loss now....i mean does that mean i have lack of faith? Does that mean that i dunno, that God is upset with me? Does that mean I am not close to him anymore?? I dunno...Please pray for me. I just hope the Lord still is with me regardless of my depression. Please pray for me.

Love

My mom, my brother, my dad, and I have all been diagnosed with depression. It's no different from being diagnosed with a normal illness. You take some medication, see a counselor, and pray that God would heal you. God is no less with you than He is with someone who has cancer. And it's not like it's guarranteed to affect you all your life either. I was diagnosed five years ago, and I haven't had to take medication for over a year. Being diagnosed is the good part anyway because now you can correctly deal with the problem. If you ever want to talk more about it, I'm just a PM away. I'll be praying that God would help you to get through this and to have peace about it.

Kelly,

I'll be lifting you up to the Father in prayer. And like meobeck said, God is no less with you through this. It's not what we go through or how we feel that defines our relationship with God, but what His Word says about it, about how He sees us as His children and who we are in Him. Psalm 34:18 tells us, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

Be encouraged, my sister.
Theme Scripture: Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. (Galatians 5:1)

And a verse for all us single folks: Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? (1 Corinthians 9:5)

Ryupower, depression isn't just something you can turn off at the tap, but yes, spending more time with God can aleviate the depression somewhat.

Kellly, I also have depression. It doesn't mean you have a lack of faith, it means we live in a fallen world. God isn't upset with you anymore than the rest of mankind. He loves you, he loves all of us. Depression does create a wall between our relationship with God to a certain extent but you can be strong in your faith and still have depression (case in point: me). Its a more a matter of choosing between letting depression rule you or letting God overcome your depression.
It's a matter of choosing to try to live life to the full, even though there isn't much joy there.

Christian counsellors can help (I know I go to one) but spending time with God and other Christians - sharing your pain, joys and sorrows is vital.
Depression is a psychological thing so it's not an easy route, nor quickly fixed. But lots of prayer and trusting in God can go a long way.
I don't think depression will ever disappear for me but its impact will be minimized as I learn to trust God more and more and rely on his understanding and not mine.

God Bless you mate!

Just remember you're still in God's hands. You don't have to fix everything. And even David got depressed -- maybe even would have been diagnosed with deep depression or bipolar if he were alive today. God didn't love him any less because of it.

Like several have said, depression is not a punishment. Actually, I believe it is probably more like a chemical imbalance in the brain...nobody's fault.

However, as Christians we have a somewhat unique avenue for dealing with depression: sacrifice of service. I have heard that one of the best ways "out" of a depression episode is to do something for someone else. Shift your focus away from yourself (not that you're selfish, it's just that depression sticks you there). and onto someone else. A long road, but a good one.

Praying for you.

Believe me Kelly, I'll be praying for you. Those who've experienced the pain and sorrow it brings need to help each other on the narrow road to life!

Depression, another great reason why fellowship is so important. You're not alone although you probably do feel like you are girlninja. I've read that the best way to beat depression is to do something useful in the world helping others like volenteering. Something like maybe buying small gifts for old people at a old persons home for christmas and then going and giving those gifts to those old people. Something that brings joy into someone else life. I'll be praying for you.
Absence is to love as wind is to a flame. It extinguishes the little, it ignites the great.

Life is a test. It is only a test. Had this been real life you would have have been instructed where to go and what to do.
