Shenmue

Despite the fact that I consider this to be one of the worst games of all time, there has been a request to describe the game, so I will provide that.

First, a little background. In the final days of the Sega Dreamcast, this title was unveiled. People were amazed at the lifelike characters (most of the available pics were just detailed heads floating in space), and the details of the game. It was hyped for quite some time, then finally released on November 7, 2000, just in time for Christmas.

The game received pretty good reviews, so I got it for Christmas that year. What a mistake...

The game is set in Japan in the 1980's, with you playing some random teenage Japanese dude named Ryo. His father is an accomplished martial artist, and somehow gets involved with a Chinese crimelord named Lan Di. In the opening moments of the game, Ryo's father fights Lan Di, and is killed. The game starts there, with you trying to avenge the death of your father. Unforunately, this is the beginning of a long and boring quest.

The problems start as you realize that the hype consisted of nothing but half-truths masking a totally boring game.

Yes, the character models are quite detailed. What they neglected to mention was that everything else about them was terrible (i.e. annoying voices, repeitive dialogue, general goofiness etc.). From the kid that wanted you to buy him a soda at the vending machine, to the fat grocery story clerk Fuku-San, all of them deserved a punch in the mouth, which brings me to the next point: lack of freedom.

The hype about detailed environments was correct, but what they didn't tell you was that your actions are severely restricted in those environments. You could do thinks like look in drawers and take useless items, buy batteries at the convenience store, or play real classic games at the arcade. However, none of this stuff was relevant to the plot or your progression through the game: it was just put there to distract your from the boredom of the gameplay, which would otherwise have consisted of nothing but walking around a boring town and talking to people who can provide you with no useful information (that's my theory, at least ;) ).

That's right: all you could do in the is walk around and buy things. In addition, you could practice martial arts on the children's playground (but nowhere else, not even in Ryo's dojo), and watch the occasional railed fight scene.

And don't get me started on the fights...as a fan of fighting games, I can say with confidence that they are an insult to fighting games. In the the vast majority of battles, you would be told to press a certain button. If you did it fast enough, the fight continued; if not, you got your butt kicked, and then had to start the whole cutscene over again. A few times, you could actually control your character, using the karate moves you practiced on the children's playground. I will admit that I didn't have the patience to play the game long enough to reach one of these, but I can guess from the playground experience that they were lame.

To summarize, if you want to know what Shenmue is like, imagine your favorite Diablo-style RPG, except set in the 1980's, with no monsters to fight, plastic figurines from vending machnes instead of cool legendary items, a cast of characters that you will grow to hate, and lots of scripted battle sequences. Btw, if you skipped to this part, go back and read the whole thing, you lazy bum! :P

Final Score: 2/10 (I'll give it two for pretty graphics)

So, what did everyone else think of the game, although I imagine that very few of you have ever played it?

Does Shenmue 2 for xbox count? Cause I got that. The voice acting was definately anoying, but I think the fighting made up for alot. It was definately challenging at times and I think they used the same moves from Virtua Fighter. I liked the button timing challenges too. I'll probably get the third one too, just to see what happens.

I'd give it a 7/10

I was only talking about the first one for the Dreamcast, as I haven't played Shenmue 2.

Im just sad and generally like games like this (e.g. games with original themes, systems, plots, mini games...even a whole new game type altogether. That is why I love games like Shenmue, Project Zero (Fatal Frame) and The Mis-adventures of Tron Bonne etc... But despite this I hate games such as the sims (the pc version anyway because at some point you just realise that there is no real objective to the game so there was no point buying all the nice furniture and building your nice house) and harvest moon 2 (because there was so little time in the day that you would weed your garden for most of it and spend the few minutes there were left rushing to have a look round the area, it would take about 20 days on the game to actually get to grips with your surroundings)

Really i think you guys are being too harsh it's an 5 year old game for crying out loud!!! Don't expect it too match up with todays games. But Anyway I think it's a freaking awsome game but yes it does have it's bad side but it never kept me from enjoying it. I think this is an example of good and bad game design. This is a kind of game that I would want too create they did I fine job of balancing a feeling of freedom with a story without making it feel too you have no control over what happens.

But yes it does have it's really bad parts such as the really bad and uninmaginative music, the really awful voice acting, and somtimes cheesy parts in the story line. But don't put it down just because it's trying somthing new and orignal. I wish there would be more games like this but that would improve on the bad parts of a game like this. So there is my opinion.

I loved both Shenmue games, and I loved the first one so much that I imported the second one from Europe so I could play it on my Dreamcast. I loved walking around and playing the different games, collecting all the different capsule toys, and just watching the busy life of a small Japanese town. I thought it was neat how everyone had their own agendas, and how it was pretty much impossible to see every single event in the same game. Yeah, like everyone said the voice acting was terrible (Hi Ryu.... what... are... you doing?). I liked the second one even more though, because it seemed faster paced than the others. The only thing I don't like though, is that Ryu is seriously boneheaded when it comes to women. I wanted to smack him at the end of Shenmue. I'm not exactly sure how the voices were done in the X-Box version of part II, but the Japanese audio in the European version I had worked just fine. You guys have to admit, Xiuying Hong kicked butt...

I hope there will be a Shenmue III, though I hear that it isn't likely.

I'm basing my review on the opinion I had of the game when it first came out (that is when I got it, after all), not on picking it up for the first time last week.

Regardless, I have two random things to say. Not to add, necessary, but to say none the less.

First, the game reminds me slightly of "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" without the grand, theft, auto, vice and colon. This is merely a random thought.

Secondly, I find it very interesting that someone here enjoyed it considerably, especially due to the number of negative reviews it received in earlier discussions. I guess that just shows that people can be quite different. One man's trash...

No, I meant "despite." I would much rather expound upon the virtues of a game that I like than trash a bad game; therefore, despite the fact that I dislike the game, I will take the time to tell others about it.

Well after beating the whole game last night I can see why you all don't like it as I totally hate the game now. That was the worst ending ever for a game! The ending just makes you feel like you wasted all that time for nothing. Well I wonder if the second one is any better. Because the ending made me mad!

[quote="cbwing0"]No, I meant "despite." I would much rather expound upon the virtues of a game that I like than trash a bad game]

Actually, the comment on my part was tongue in cheek. I asked for a description basically because the game was considered so horrible (and to see if it was the same as one my friend enjoyed).

About jobs... I agree. This is similar to my reason for not liking some literature... I have my own life, why would I want to read about someone else's? This is the reason I tend to drift toward supernatural literature, which is obviously outside of my realm of experience, thus interesting.

But I haven't even seen this game. Perhaps I should stop posting here.

Along the lines of Volt's post: When I play old games, I'm not looking for cutting edge graphics, brilliant gameplay, breathtaking cutscenes or several other advertising cliches. Mainly I look for games to be fun. Like the old Mario or Sonic games, or some of the older Final Fantasys.

Take for example the ancient game Crystallis... far older than most games, yet possessing something resembling a plot with a few twists, and a decently enjoyable battle system. It's won my person Game Age-Quality Ratio award.

I liked Shenmue. It had its problems, sure. Mainly the voice acting was sub-par and there weren't enough fighting sequences to balance out all that errand-running. Still, I'm always open to a good adventure game and Shenmue was well worth my 17 bucks (plus, I thought it was cool that my finishing date on the in-game "calendar" just happened to be New Year's Day). If there was one reason for me to wish I had an Xbox, it would be to play Shenmue 2.

Well, thank you at least for being very respectful in your opinion, even with vast disagreements with the rest of this thread. Having not played the game, I have nothing else I can truly say, other than that there has never been any chance whatsoever that I would play this game, regardless of its quality.
