I just pondered this question! There was this one unnamed show. I heard a Vocaloid sing the opening and it was amazing! So I look it ip. CRUDDY TRASHY YURI! MUST UNSEE!
But God bless you guys for reading this, and any theories on the topic! Or do ya' just think I should shut up and get to my doodling!

I would argue that they don't. You're taking one experience and throwing it across the board. I can think of just as many great shows that have great openings, that equal the amount of terrible shows that have terrible openings.
But becuse I have no desire to destroy my eardrums and eyeballs by finding those terrible openings for terrible shows, I will leave it at that.
EDIT: Also, using 'trashy' to define yuri is technically using the word 'trashy' wrong. There are some yuri series that are excelent quality. However, people will find them morally wrong.

There's some anime that are awesome and have the best openings ever, like .hack//sign, Gundam Wing, and Rahxephon, to name a few. Then there are those that are great but have terrible openings, like Berserk. My point: don't judge an anime by its opening. The opening is just there to make the show look awesome (in theory).

I wouldn't say that's a trend, but at times mediocre series can have amazing soundtracks.
Case in point: Vampire Knight. Epic soundtrack. The anime itself is rather mehish.

One anime I would have never watched if I judged it by it'd opening is Ghost hunter. Just random cloudyness. But the anime itself is really good.

Seconding what Atria said here.
Something can be trashy without being morally wrong, and something can be morally wrong without being trashy.
I personally have seen quite a few anime/manga with yuri/yaoi relationships and thought they were great.

For the sake of the rest of the thread, I would prefer it if we didn't go down this road.

For this sake of this thread then I won't say what I was gonna say then. xD
Meanwhile yeah, never judge an anime by it's opening! I never would have watched quite a few good anime that I really enjoy based on their opening. xD

One Piece has some awesome openings. Naruto has some good opening songs too even though I don't like the show and think it's lame.

The Umineko anime also has an insanely awesome OP but the anime itself is mediocre when compared to the Visual Novel.

Clearly, the answer is to watch more good anime with good music, because if that is your appraisal of anime music, you haven't watched enough good anime.

But music is just one small facet of anime. It's like graphics on video games. Sure they look nice, but a game doesn't have to have great graphics to be a good game.
Good music is icing on the cake. You can argue that good anime series are more likely to have good music simply on the basis of quality.

Which is why I said 'enough'. If you've watched x good anime but none of them have good music, then you clearly have not watched a large enough sample to be representative of whatever you're trying to say about anime at large.

Thanks. I'll confess, I was only thinking of one series I accidentally stumbled upon. Ya know what? It seemed to have nasty (ecchi) images too. I.....just don't wanna talk about it. So I was wrong. I apologize for my misguidedness. Do whatever you like with this thread, take it down whatever road you (and the mods <3) like.

Agreed, and I fixed that for you. The opening and endings were amazing and fit what would have been an otherwise great adaption.
I can't think of any series I would call, "trashy" but I can think of ones who's openings I enjoyed more than the show itself.
Busou Renkin, Canaan, Kannagi, and Maria+Holic are all series where the OP is something I got more enjoyment out of than the show itself. Not to say they were particularly bad, though. (Busou Renkin was pretty average and Canaan was alright.)

This is pretty much why I have the OP and ED of Kuroshitsuji in my playlist.
