Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne

Has anyone here ever watched the anime Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne? A friend on YouTube told me it's pretty good and I should watch it, but she isn't a Christian either so I was just wondering if the series is good and if there is anything I should be looking out for. From what she told me the story follows a girl that is the reincarnation of Joan of Arc?

This might have been better in the anime/manga recommendations thread (we give advice about sieres there, too)

It is about someone who's considered the reincarnation of Joanne of Arc, and besides that is a fairly typical magical girl series. An angel gives her the power to help God and seal demons away.

"God's power is scattered across the Earth, and if He does not gather enough by the turn of the millennium, He will die. To block Him, The Devil had sent out agents to gather His power, which is the beauty in human hearts, in the form of chess pieces. With Finn's (an angel) assistance, Maron transforms into the reincarnation of Jeanne D'Arc in order to hunt Demons hidden within works of art." (from Wikipedia)

It does distort some things related to Christianity (Rosaries are apparently not the equivalent of prayer beads), but most of it is relatively light (there are demon knights and one of the angels that was fallen becomes saved again, and there's reincarnation).

But it also encourages faith in God.

I watched me some KKJ back in the day and other than it being a cross between DN Angel and Sailor Moon, it was pretty good. As long as you're aware of how it distorts Christianity, I don't think much else will bother you.

I never know what category to put anything anymore. Sorry.

Anyway, thanks for the information. :) Seems like a pretty interesting series.

There's a review of it on this site. Our previous owner, Ashley, once said it was her all-time favorite. She liked it so much, the main character was her avatar.

There is? I looked in the anime and manga review section and didn't see it?

Odd. Ah, well.

The anime is decent. A little dated in animation and music, but overall pretty good. The only real difference between it and the manga is that the manga has more background on the angels.

Oh, my! Where is Ashley-san? XD I'm feeling nostalgic. Maybe Shooby can sweep on and me me feel better. XD

I never watched the anime but I did collect the manga. I believe the anime is more generically magical girl. And yes, it has very typical misappropriation of Christianity and God to make for, what is for a Japanese, an exotic theology. *sigh* It bugged me enough to spoil it for me, but I can be awfully sensitive about those things.

It's listed under the English translation of the name.

Personally, I stay away from it, but that's just how I feel convicted about the spirituality of it. It's a little too much for my liking, but that's just my personal conviction.

And, as a die-hard fan of D.N.Angel, I couldn't help but feel like it was just a carbon-copy of it and Sailor Moon (as was stated before). It's possible it was released around the same time (if I'm remembering correctly, I read that the first chapter of KKJ was released a few months after the first chapter of D.N.Angel), but I still feel too interested in D.N.Angel to read/watch something that was *that* similar. This is also one reason why I watch Sailor Moon, but don't really care for Tokyo Mew Mew, Wedding Peach, etc.

^ The thing is, since Sailor Moon sort of set the genre for Magical Girl, a lot of things are going to feel like it. It's necessary to develop an ability to differentiate the fine differences between them.

There are similarities between KKJ and Sailor Moon, but they're pretty superficial.

Yeah, very true. I think that there *would* be enough differences for me to like KKJ if it wasn't so similar to D.N.Angel. I like Shugo Chara! too, but it's pretty different when compared to Sailor Moon. Tokyo Mew Mew and Wedding Peach are too similar to Sailor Moon for me... Likewise, KKJ is too similar to D.N.Angel.

I think Rushia just meant it's a mix of D.N.Angel and Sailor Moon because it's D.N.Angel's female version, with a girl that transforms instead of a boy... The girl even looks a bit like Sailor Moon. The boy also reminds me quite a bit of Tuxedo Mask. Or at least if she didn't mean like that, I did.

And, like I said, the questionable religious aspects that are in KKJ but not D.N.Angel also turned me off. But, that's just how I feel convicted personally.

I can get that, on both counts.

You're welcome! But yeah, you're not the only one to have trouble finding it, so no worries. I didn't even notice it until I saw somebody else post a link to it in some other thread a long time ago.
