Explanation: I had two ideas for a thread going at once. So, let's combine those ideas.
First, Japanese:
Hayao Miyazaki
Makato Shinkai
Satoshi Kon
Mahiro Maeda and the rest of the Gonzo crew
Shinichiro Watanabe
Katsuhiro Otomo
Mamoru Oshii
Sunrise
Leiji Matsumoto
Now, American:
All the Looney Tunes people
Walt Disney
Hanna-Barbera
Pixar
Walter Lantz
Max Fleischer (made some neat Superman cartoons)
Paul Dini and Bruce Timm

Time for the ultimate showdown Japanese animation vs American animation.
You forget Kaiba boy that Japanese cartoons are slightly slower than their American counter parts.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone FTW.

I don't know of many animators by name... In fact, I don't know many animators by name. I know a few directors, yeah. Animators? Disney was an animator, of course. Hideaki Anno was an animator who worked for Miyazaki. I'm not even sure if Miyazaki was an animator or just a director... I know Osamu Tezuka did all the designs for his anime, but I don't know if he actually animated.
Favorite American animation directors, living:
Don Bluth.
John Lasseter
Favorite Japanese directors, living:
I'd say Yoshitoshi ABe, but he didn't even direct... But he did work on animation for Lain, but I didn't find Lain's animation to be impressive, so it's sort of a catch 22. He is one of my favorite anime... creators, I guess. Lain was mostly his idea and Haibane Renmei was entirely his idea.
This thread gives me serious deja vu, though... Is this a really old thread that just got made to look new via a glitch?

I'm just here to edit the title and opening post to make things clear. Since I can't name any animators...
My favorite American Japanese animator is Tokyo Bill. In addition to doing an excellent job being two nationalities simultaneously, he's always gone to great effort to reduce the amount of fanservice in anything he animates.
