I did some searching, and I didn't find this topic already made into a thread, so I'm going ahead with it. Once again, if I have made an error and this topic has already been done (or it simply can't stand for a reason I have yet to conceive of), it may be taken down.

What are your top 10 favorite anime? This is a list that crosses all of the genres, whether your into science fiction, shonen, romance, drama, comedy, mystery, or anything of the sort.

This is a list of my own top 10 favorite anime:

1. Monster
2. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
3. Fullmetal Alchemist
4. Cowboy Bebop
5. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex & 2nd G.I.G
6. Durarara!!
7. One Piece
8. Naruto
9. Gundam 00
10. Dragon Ball Z (cut me some slack, its on here because it was the show that got me started on watching anime)

. True, but I simply can't believe such a thing would happen. Besides, I'm pretty sure that as I watch more anime that my list will be continually updated anyway.

EDIT: Oh, just realized you were talking about your own list. My bad.

I believe this is the first time a "top ten" thread has come up since I have seen more than 10 anime series or movies (and therefore am somewhat qualified to answer). How exciting.

1) 5 Centimeters Per Second
1) Cowboy Bebop
3) Cromartie High School
3) Sword of the Stranger
3) Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal
3) Durarara!!
7) Witch Hunter Robin
8) Serial Experiments Lain
8) Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door
10) When the Cicada's Cry

As a rule, I don't list movies because they're too different to rate as better or worse than a certain series. While 5 Centimeters per Second is obviously better than Bleach, it gets harder once you start comparing it to something like FMA:Brotherhood or Baccano!.

5. Haibane Renmei
6. Mononoke
7.Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

1. Rebuild of Evangelion
2. Kara No Kyoukai
3. Hellsing Ultimate
4. Spice & Wolf
5. Canaan
6. Ga-Rei -Zero-
7. Higashi No Eden
8. Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
9. Wolf's Rain
10. Mobile Suit Gundam

I'd say that's pretty close.

Can my list include anime movies as well? I actually haven't seen too many anime shows, and not many movies either, but if I were to combine them into a list, then it might make 10. XD!!

Most of the people posting are doing this, I just prefer not to mix the two because of the varying criteria I might have.

Speaking of movies...Which is only my top 5, since I have a lack of anime movie viewage. Beyond this I've seen a couple of movies for shonen series I used to like a lot(I can't believe I sat through all three Naruto movies) and a couple other Ghibli films, but I don't want to use films I don't like on a top something list, so I'm keeping it a top 5. Also, I have yet to see several films I wish to see.

1) 5 Centimeters per Second
2) Spirited Away
3) Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door
4) Whisper of the Heart
5) Princess Mononoke

I don't watch a lot of anime compared with most people here, and I don't know if the list can only include titles that are series, and not feature length "films", but here are mine:

1. Laputa: The Castle in the Sky
2. Planetes
3. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
4. Five Centimeters Per Second
5. The Place Promised in Our Early Days

My top 10 series:
1. .hack//sign (too bad the DVD version's no longer in print, or so I've heard)
2. Haibane Renmei
3. Cowboy Bebop
4. Inuyasha (now that it's actually ended, please give me a break)
5. Tenchi Universe
6. Rahxephon
7. Gundam 00 (Gundam Seed ties)
8. Chrono Crusade
9. Trigun
10. Full Metal Alchemist
Movies:
1. Spirited Away
2. Ghost in the Shell
3. My Neighbor Totoro
4. Princess Mononoke
5. Castle in the Sky
6. Only Yesterday
7. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
8. Cowboy Bebop: the movie
9. Place Promised in Our Early Days
10. Millennium Actress

PostPosted: Sat Apr 17, 2010 6:03 am
by Tancos
1. Haibane Renmei
2. Serial Experiments Lain
3. Dennou Coil
4. Cardcaptor Sakura
5. Shingu
6. Crest/Banner of the Stars
7. Oh! Edo Rocket
8. Animal Yokocho
9. Divergence Eve (including Misaki Chronicles)
10. Kino's Journey

The top five haven't changed for about two years, but the rest of the list varies from day to day. Tomorrow it might include Mushi-Shi, Mononoke, Paranoia Agent or Princess Tutu.

I have a different list for movies.

1. Spirited Away
2. Mind Game
3. Millennium Actress
4. Princess Mononoke
5. Beautiful Dreamer

The fact that I listed a particular show doesn't mean that I give it an unreserved recommendation. Divergence Eve, for example, is a good story with strong characters, but the character design is grotesque, the show is loaded with utterly irrelevant fanservice, and the first episode is mystifying. If you have patience and can stifle your gag reflex, it's well worth your time, but it's not for everyone.

1. D.N.Angel
2. Tsubasa Chronicle/xxxHOLiC
3. Bleach
4. Shugo Chara!
5. Vampire Knight
6. Ouran High School Host Club
7. Fullmetal Alchemist
8. Kanon (2006)
9. Wolf’s Rain
10. Revolutionary Girl Utena

Runners up, and why they aren’t on the list…

Fruits Basket – would’ve been on the list if it wasn’t for one thing… The anime ended WAY too fast! It doesn’t come to a satisfying ending. It ended way too soon. They need at least as many episodes as the manga has chapters. I wish they’d make more seasons.

Fairy Tale – So far, so interesting, but not on the list because I haven’t seen enough to decide yet.

Mamotte! Lollipop – Same as above.

One Piece – Same as previous two.

Cardcaptor Sakura – Was on the list for a long time, but after seeing Shugo Chara!, I felt that it just didn’t live up to it. It still has a special place on my list though, and I will always like Sakura and Syaoran… Another reason why Tsubasa is still there. ;P

Top 10 manga's a different story...

2. Spirited Away
3. Grave of the Fireflies

JAY/KAY

There was a discussion I read recently about how top ten lists tend to reflect more about what you want others to think of you at the time of writing. Of course, I don't think it's a conscious thing; it's more that it's something that happens when you're going through your mental list and thinking through your choices to slot in. Try reading some lists in that light and I'm sure it'll be interesting.

So how do I want to be perceived? Since I'm bored, let's spend effort to post content instead of writing for my blog:

10. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Higurashi is a horror/mystery known for its incredibly violent scenes of murder and torture. What's less well-known is that there's a pretty interesting twist to the story. On the surface, it's a story that's about the inevitability of man's violent nature. For those who are able to finish it, it's a story about trusting in your friends and overcoming destiny.

9. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Gurren Lagann is about super robot. I can't say for sure since I have not watched much super robot, but I hear that Gurren Lagann is essentially a journey through super robot, starting from humble beginnings and growing exponentially into something bigger than we could have possibly imagined.

8. Kaiba
Kaiba is the show with the deceptively childish art style about a dystopian future where physical bodies are transient and memories are data. All of a sudden, things like self and identity don't mean quite the same thing anymore. What happens if you lose your memories? What happens if you fall in love with a person based only on their physical appearance?

7. Hidamari Sketch
I don't expect anyone to get this except me. In particular, I feel like the way that the whole student life and living together with your friends dynamic is captured perfectly. My university living experience has been pretty much this, except instead of making art jokes, we make computer science jokes.

6. Bakemonogatari
The big draw of Bakemonogatari is the wit and dialogue, which is not something you can say for too many shows. It also features a fairly refreshing take on the shounen romance relationship and some excellent characters.

5. Summer Wars
On top of looking absolutely stunning, this is a movie that explores the possibilities of the future of computing in a way that isn't like the cyberpunk stories of old. It's very much a look at the future of the Internet in the context of social networking where normal people use it extensively as opposed to sects of hackers back in the 80s. Also, the main character likes math and can factor large numbers in his head, so he's good people.

4. 5 Centimeters per Second
A lot of stories tell us that love is powerful. This story shows us that distance is powerful and it does so very, very beautifully.

3. Aria
Aria is the story of a girl who finds the joys in the things she encounters every day as she meets new people and explores her city. Also, she's training to become a gondolier on Mars in the 23rd century. It's a show that really brings out the child-like wonder part of you.

2. Kara no Kyoukai
Kara no Kyoukai explores the nature of existence and death. What happens to a person's heart when they take the life of another? What pushes them to do it? Is there any going back once someone becomes a murderer? All of this is set in some of the most beautiful animation and music of the past decade.

1. Clannad
Clannad follows the journey of a boy from a broken family. Through several encounters, learns what family means and finds love. He experiences the joy of life and the pain of loss. He learns what it means to be a son, a husband, and a father. It's a heartwrenching and heartwarming story about family.

1. Will Always be Rurouni Kenshin. Although I have to be in a certain mood to want to watch it, this anime is what got me into the genre.
2. Aishiteruze Baby This is the cutest and most heart-felt anime I have ever seen, I fell in love with the characters, and Yuzu is so adorable... I will never look at onigiri without thinking of the little song she sings.
2b. (tie) Ouran High School Host Club Awesome Characters, hilarious stereotypes, and an actual storyline! :D
3. Honey and Clover Once again, amazing characters. I really adore this series, not only because I can relate to the art students, but because everyone is just fantastic and I really feel the emotions that the characters feel.
4. Eureka 7 Holland is in this, need I say more? :P
5. Blood + Hagi is in this, need I say more? :P
6. Fruits Basket- The anime is far less superior to the manga, and I guess after watching it like 10-15 times it just gets a tad old. (I show this anime to friends a lot, to introduce them to anime)
7. Full Metal Alchemist
8. Trigun
9. Cowboy Bebop
10. Haibane Renmei
