Looking for Name of Anime

Hi guys. I'm trying to remember the name of an Anime movie I saw a couple of years back. The style reminded me a lot of the 80's cell-shaded movies, so I guess it's a bit old. The story revolves around a feisty female reporter (she reminded me more of Vasquez from Aliens cause of the red headband she was wearing the whole time) that gets involved with an android that is accidently set loose and goes after the creator's daughter. There's fight scene between the army and the android (there were 2 androids to start off with, but the one got destroyed, or rather self destructed) and a cool scene an in elevator where she has to repel the android with a huge magnet. The android's design itself is female (not anatomically correct mind you), with long white hair. In the end it either overheats or gets blown up by a helicopter while the reporter and the scientist's daughter are trapped on top of a tall building.
Sound familiar to anyone?

I might be wrong, but the adaptation of Ozamu Tezuka's Metropolis jumps to mind. Though, if I remember correctly, the main character on that one is male.

No sorry. The style was more like the original Bubblegum Crisis and Battle Angel Alita.

Well, I don't know what anime it was you saw, but I can verify, it is/was not Metropolis. Completely different from what you described... sorry I couldn't be of help. :/

Cool! I had no idea "Black Magic" ever had an anime!
"Black Magic" was Shirow's first big success. It's ancient history (I think the comic was in the 1970s. It was published in English in the 80s).
For those that don't know Shirow, he's the same guy that came up with "Ghost In The Shell", amongst other things.

And unfortunately, Anime News Network thinks it sucks.

Ohhh that one. I downloaded a fansub of it several years ago but I neglected to watch it. I gave it a passing glance and thought that the animation and character design had aged badly even being Masamune Shirow's.

It's... average. Rampaging robot blows 80'd-future stuff up, and that's pretty darn cool. Kind of lacking in little things like "character" and "story" though.

I thought it was rather excellent. The action scenes were especially well done.
