My Lament for L, Light, and others. . . .

This is my first post in this thread. . . . I just finished watching DEATH NOTE recently and I loved it!!!!! I'm in the DEATH NOTE phase right now meaning I can't even think about new anime's or old anime's until i get over DN. . .

Anyway Here are my thoughts:
LIGHT YAGAMI : He had it all: the looks, the brains, the charm, a loving family, and a bright future. But he lost it all in his desperate quest to become a little 'g' god'. He was doomed the moment he first wrote in the Note as a simple test. It is said that whoever writes in the note book would live a life of misery. In Lights defense, he did not know that small piece of information until after he spoke to Ryuk. He also didn't know that He couldn't go to Heaven or Hell after writing in the Death Note. He should be thankful for that, for Hell is far worse than nonexistence. However, I'm sure there is no God in the world of Death Note. Instead of a god, Light became KIRA, a killer. That fact is clear since he was willing to kill anyone, innocent or guilty, who got in his way. He was even willing to sacrifice the life of his friends and his own father and sister to get power. His passion for a better world died when his pride and selfishness to gain power took over. He was not justice, as he claimed, he was a murderer. After He lost his memories, he was shown to be kind, caring and intelligent. Let me also add that he became beautiful again. The power of the death note had turned him into an ugly monster and it would have been better for him if he had never touched the Death note again and regained his memories. With his stupid pride and ego, he couldn't see that he was nothing more than entertainment for a bored shinigami who couldn't care less for him, and in the end killed him himself. He had it all, and he died alone. This is the tragedy of Light Yagami.

L : L, the world's top-rated detective and tasked with tracking down and arresting KIRA. The only tragedy here is that he knew all along from the very beginning. However, he was unable to act because of Light's Father and the Police Officers behind him. L was practically alone in his investigation since his entire team, excluding Watari, was biased on the accusation of Light. He would have caught KIRA, for he would have never let Light out of his site, however his team insisted that L was wrong and he should leave Light alone. In the end, L had won, but was unable to see his victory.

My Lament also goes out to:

Mello and Matt : The part they played was vital in the capture of KIRA

Touta Matsuda and Shuichi Aizawa : The death of their Chief and the revelation of KIRA as the person they thought was their friend

Reiji Namikawa and Watari I just wish they didn't die
Sorry this was quite long. . . .

apparently the hundreds of criminals don't deserve don't deserve pity, oh and you might want some spoiler tags in your post. Ask someone else to do them, I have no idea.

Yes, spoiler tags would be a good idea. Simply put

[*spoiler]

without the asterisk were you start your spoiler and
right after your spoiler.

So, it should look like this [*spoiler]some major character dies
without the asterisk.

Nope, they're criminals.

It's funny that anyone would say "Oh we should pity the criminals who died by Light's hands!" but let me ask you this. Would you pity a criminal who got the death sentence? Nope, you wouldn't. So what's the difference?

The only ones I'd feel pity for are the ones who were wrongly incarcerated and Light killed them anyway, because they were not really criminals.

Except everyone Light killed weren't death row inmates or serial killers.

I don't "pity" criminals exactly, but regardless of whether I believe in the death penalty or not, I still hold that everyone deserves a fair and just trial even in an imperfect governmental system.

Also, I get really annoyed when people throw around spoilers carelessly.
To the original poster: Use spoiler tags, or at least put a warning in the thread title next time.

I pity all of those manipulated by Light(Misa included.).
And also I don't think it is right to have someone die because of suicide. Really that is a personal decision that shouldn't be controlled.
I would hate you right now if other fangirls hadn't ruined this series for me . . . oh well, the ending sucks like crazy anyway.

Why would you expect anything else to have happened? Really that was how it was going to end and we all knew it. Haven't you ever read Macbeth?

It's been a while since I've watched Death Note but I think if I remember correctly, the criminals Light killed were all pretty big ones, i.e. murderers or rapists or the like. I don't think he killed off the ones that like, robbed a convenience store or something.

The only ones I remember Light killing that weren't criminals were the FBI agents tracking him, and I'll even count the guy who posed as L in the trap L set (since even though he WAS a criminal, Light didn't know that when he killed him).

Anyway my point was this. If a guy killed ten people and got the death sentence, people would probably go "Yeah he deserved it." But if a guy killed tne people and only got say, life imprisonment, no death penalty, and then he was killed by Light, I'm suddenly supposed to feel pity for him? No dice. I don't feel a shred of pity for those Light killed, like I said, with the exception of the non-criminals and the wrongly incarcerated.

Actually
when Light was put under survailence(spelling?) he could only kill a purse snatcher and some other minor criminal
sorry about not putting spoiler warnings i guess it's too late to use it now. . . I hope i didn't ruin it for anybody :red:

anyway this post was about how light's life could have been better not about whether or not killing criminals was wrong. . . actually to me they were only stock characters to help the story move along. i hadn't really thought about their rights because well, they're not real. . . I thought about the morals of Light

This anime does show something about human nature. It's pride. This was to pick just about any average person and show that they in their minds are righteous and that all criminals are unrighteous. But from the moment he wrote that first name in it, Light's path was set. He was consumed with the power to kill and that's what he chose to do. Of course there are some people who wouldn't do this, but to find one of those is a rare thing.

If you've read Macbeth then you may understand this stuff somewhat.

Yeah, Phoebe's right. And for what it's worth, Light had always planned to start killing big and whittle down to small so that eventually all "bad" people would be eliminated.

Anyway. I have a bone to pick with anyone who doesn't put Yagami Souichirou on their pitylist. His and Raye&Naomi's deaths are like, the most tragic and waaah in the whole series-- they're some of the most pure characters in the series to die.

Macbeth

Actually, my classic-literature-to-compare-to-Death-Note of choice is Crime and Punishment. Hubris, yes, but I don't think Macbeth's themes are even as powerfully close to Death Note's as C&P's. Also, I'm sure I'm going to literature analysis hell for this, but Raskolnikov is like an emo antisocial Light Yagami. And Porfiry is L and Sonia is Misa FWAHAHAHAHAHA.

Except Crime and Punishment's ending was better. OH YEAH I BROUGHT IT WHAT NOW?

Agreed.

Also, these two works compare easily.

Yeah you are right. I remember it too. I was reading Crime and Punishment during when AS showed DN. And yes, I did see the conections that you mentioned. I especially liked Porfiry as L. Porfiry knew just about the whole time to what Raskolinikov did and was about to bring at surprise about midway at which something unexpected happened. But the ending when Porfiry confronts him again is just plain SWEET.

Now, Light isn't really emo antisocial persay. I mean he did confine himself to his room to write names, but he did talk to Ryuk and other people. If anyone who had been emo antisocial, it would have been Near. Well there was ONE incedent where Light was emo antisocial and that may have been the chip eating thing. "I will take a chip....AND EAT IT!" That kinda weirded me out.

Im sorry but you're allusion from Misa to Sonya isn't quite accurate. Sonya was TRYING to get Raskolnikov to repent. While Misa encouraged Light's actions.

However Lady Macbeth went along with Macbeth to kill the people(Making her like Misa.). And Macbeth was like Light. But yeah that's about all the connections.

I meant that Rashy is an emo antisocial version of Light, i.e. Light is not.

Misa = Sonya was a joke XD
