Wall-E will win it.

There is not a lot of people outside of Japan that know what or even seen The Sky Crawlers and the Sword of the Stranger. I want to see Sky Crawlers, but Wall-E or Waltz With Bashir are very like and have had praise.

Plus, you know that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are going to be very uneasy on giving the award to anime film after Hayao Miyazaki didn't take the award, when he won it that year. That really really seal the deal on another anime film every winning it again.

Best Animated Film accepts only three slots? I'm mildly annoyed. Near every other award has five nominees, including Best Animated Short.

Anyway, Sword of the Stranger and Sky Crawlers. Neither of them have great chances, mainly because they had the bad timing to come out the same year as Wall-E, which was truly a groundbreaking achievement. I've heard people debating whether or not Wall-E might break the animation stigma (though pretty unlikely, in my opinion), but nobody's heard of these two. Aside from Anime fans, already a niche' audience.

At best, one of them may receive one of the nominations, but Hollywood isn't very charitable towards Japanese animation Not Directed By Miyazaki, so they'll both probably be passed over.

If Madagascar makes it in though, the entire category is essentially a joke.

[quote="AnimeNewsNetwork"]The academy allows up to three nominations in this category if more than eight films are submitted]

Also L-O-Freaking-L at Madagascar 2 even being considered for a nomination. Oh Academy, you amuse me so.

Though I doubt that either will win, it's good to know that they're at least receiving nods.

I think WALL-E deserves an Oscar. It was really well done, clean, funny, and had a good message...
Has anyone watched Sky Crawlers or Sword of the Stranger? Do they have an English translation? What do you think of them/it?

I'm so looking forward to Sky Crawlers. They've got to release it here (other than the occasional 'showing at the city-far-from-you film festival!' release) at some point.
