Some animes are long, some are short. This thread focuses on the latter. I've noticed that there are a lot of short titles that are actually quite rewarding. So what titles are your favorite. For the purposes of this discussion, "short" means at least two, but not more than 20 episodes. Here are some of my faves:
Geneshaft (13)
Dual Parallel Trouble Adventure (14)
Serial Experiments Lain (13)
Now and Then, Here and There (13)
Haibane Renmei (13)
Boogiepop Phantom (12)
Paranoia Agent (13)

Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket: This will always remain as one of my favorite anime series, short or long. I'm not sure why, but it is just so great.

No mention of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (14) yet? Also, Minami-ke (13) is an excellent slice-of-life comedy and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (13) is another excellent, but darker, comedy.

Oh yes! You are right Blkmage! I can't believe I could possibly forget The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, but I have one question. Is that still considered a short series combined with the new second season that they are making?

I'd consider the second season more of a sequel, so the two would be two different series. The first season had a definite end and it won't be necessary to watch the second season if you were satisfied with just the first. In contrast, we have stuff like Code Geass or Gundam 00 which are both really a series split over two seasons.

FLCL - Just enough insanity to leave the viewer satisfied, yet not too much as to put the viewer off.
Midori Days - I love this series, but there's only SO much of Midori's voice I could take.
ToHeart - 13 Episodes was JUST the right amount for a story like this. Were it to go on longer, it would start to get old FAST.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - How they managed to cram that much story into 14 eps is beyond my comprehension level.
Pilot Candidate - An anime that beautifully designed and with a story that unique deserved MORE episodes! But the ones we got were somewhat satisfying.

Read or Die the OVA was awesome! And I really like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Other than that I don't think I've seen any other short series.

The Tales of Symphonia OVA is eight episodes, but only 1-4 have been released yet. It's even better if you've played the game! ^_^

What about medium?
Full Metal Panic (24).
I would have thought .hack//sign was short, but its like 40. so i guess not:lol: I only considered anime long if it was like a tv show that ran for several seasons (Inuyasha, Full Metal Alchemist, etc.)

I dunno dude, this is the best "short" anime series thread not medium. And rocklobster even said must be under 20 episodes. I would like to say my favorite medium lengthed anime, but this is the short anime thread which makes it different than others because many anime that is made is about 26 episodes. So its kinda different to watch one shorter than that. Well okay 24 is less than 26. I don't know!

Well, I just have never seen an anime longer than one, shorter than 20. Shoot, I just gave away how little anime I watch didnt I? /runs for cover from angry CAA mob lol.
In all seriousness, I don't have the money to watch much anime, so I don't have much to pick from, so I was trying to see if I could get away with one that was close to the cap, if a little over it.

Ah it's okay, I didn't mean to be harsh. Yeah right now, I can't really afford anime, so I mainly just watch whatever I can get off of cable.

Short anime would be about one season, or 13 eps, give or take.
Baccano! goes without saying. Suzumiya Haruhi is a given for me. I also liked Chocolate Underground-- 13 eps but each is 3 minutes long (how's THAT for short?). It's not wonderful and original at all, but it IS unintentionally quite funny.

With an addition to most that has been said here, such as Baccano! and Haibane Renmei(which I still need to finish, but I know it's great already), I will also add that Kino's Journey (13) was brilliant.

I forgot all about that one...and I have the series! (Picked it up for a great price at FYE) It was a great short series. I haven't watched it in a while, so I do believe a marathon is in order on my next two back to back off days. I'm suprised nobody mentioned "Full Metal Panic! Fummofu!" Granted it does have it's fanservice moments, but it's hillarious in my book.
