kookiest anime-themed merchandise

What's the kookiest way to promote an anime? My vote goes to the panties included with Najica Blitz Tactics (I think that's the title). What perveted marketing idea-thinker-upper (or whatever the position is called)
came up with that?

Mine isn't merchandise. It's the English-language distributor's web page for
Shadow Star Narutaru. They may have completely changed it by now, but when I checked it out, I found it a cheerful and bright sort of thing, seeming to advertise a series about a happy-go-lucky group of kids and their vaguely pokemon-esque supernatural friends or toys or whatever-you-wish-to-consider-'em. It looked upbeat and positive, the sort of thing that most pre-teens will eagerly look forward to watching (at least, the way adults working in TV programming believe do they do.)
Anyone who knows the real
Shadow Star Narutaru can confirm that it is dark, often depressing, and sometimes borders on outright sick. It is chock-full of subjects like suicide, sexually active teens and resultant pregnacy, assaults, murders, mass murder, genocide... Nothing even remotely resembling the impression the web site promotes. And there's little sense I can see in advertising your product by advertising some other product entirely. Imagine representing
Tokko as if it were just like
Dragonball Z...SSNT's only positive characteristics are beautiful character designs, a catchy OP, and a gorgeous ED. I recommend fast forwarding through everything between OP and ED, where you can enjoy both the music and the character designs. The rest, IMHO, you can dispose of without missing anything worth watching.

Any kind of anime-themed bread is the awesomest merchandise ever, especially if the series has nothing to do with food.
I think the worst I've seen is like, some Evangelion canned beverage that's supposed to be LCL fluid. WHAT.

Breakfast of champions.
You've reminded me, I've got that ancient can of Sailor Moon spaghetti in the pantry, don't I?
Yeah. Spaghetti. No joking.

A CHALLENGER APPROACHES.
I don't think there is enough science in the world to explain why this is so awesome.

This one is just...odd... Now, I've heard of Digimon Pencil Cases... But Digimon COLOGNE?!?!?! Seriously, would you want YOUR child smelling like a kid that's been wondering around the digital world for DAYS at a time with no bath in sight!? And need I remind us all of the oddest aircraft to fly the friendly skies:

Domo-kun energy drink. Not kidding; saw them (along with Naruto energy drinks) at FYE recently. My gosh.
(And I'm still not even sure where the Domo-kun thing came from...but Target seems to have picked it up for Halloween *shrugs*)

Domo-kun is sort of the NHK answer to the NBC peacock... except that they have him actually doing stuff on station breaks.

What about Naruto Ramen Noodles?I've never seen them before but it would probably make some sense for someone to make them.

Yeah I know what you mean since when I went into Target a few days ago, I saw a lot of Domo-Kun stuff there like A big plushie and the other cardboard displays.
But I don't mind since it's better to see him then all that other crappy Halloween stuff.
About that Plate...Very weird looking, maybe even a tad sacrilegious.

I actually wouldn't mind having a set of silverware like that. The plate I can pass on though.
I don't know if this would necessarily be called "kooky", but in Japan, you can get a Char Aznable credit card.
See? That's how popular the guy is over there. XD
There's also a Char cell phone complete with Zaku head charging base.
Have a look. I love how on the back of the phone it says "Using this device while exposed to the Minovsky Particle at combat level density causes EXCESSIVE HEAT". Don't ask me to explain; you'd have to see Gundam to get the joke, haha.

You can even buy Char Aznable suitcases in Japan.

I don't know about cookiest, but that's the ugliest bit of anime merchandise I've ever seen... One of my friends, knowing I was a SM fan (and wanting to **** me off, no doubt) bought me a "Darien" doll... *shiver*
I probably just tossed it in a corner somewhere, but I think I may have stabbed it a few times, though.

do the gum and energy drinks taste like fish?
After all, Naruto does mean fishcake.

A surprising number of anime series actually have their own energy drinks. Off the top of my head, I've seen Naruto, Gintama, D.Gray-man, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, (what I believe was) Harukanaru Toki no Naka de -- and those were only the series I recognized. On top of that, I've also seen Reborn and Axis Powers Hetalia pasta (happily masticate Italy and Sawada Tsunayoshi!), various forms of tea, candy, and cookies, and Shounen Jump curry mix.
A friend of mine actually purchased the curry mix out of pure curiosity. I'll have to see how that one turns out.
Though none of that really measures up to my personal favorite: red Gintama-themed fundoshi (traditional Japanese underwear. I was going to link the Wikipedia page, but there's. Uh. Butt.).
Well. Then there's Fish's plate there...

That is somehow, strangely appropriate. Gintama energy drink not so much. Unless the can prominently features Kagura, I suppose.

Mayonnaise would have been a better choice, I think.

The Gintama drink, if I remember correctly, was Black Orange flavor, with Okita on the front.
I almost bought it, just to find out what Black Orange was exactly.
Then I thought better.

Making the various swords from various shows into letter openers. That's just kooky in my opinion. I mean, come on, these are awesome tools the characters use and they have been reduced to opening an envelope? It just seems to degrade the sword.

"Degrading the sword"? These are cartoons. It's merchandising - the only reason many anime exist.

Frankly I'd love a letter opener like that. XD
