hmmm...i haven't started a thread like this in a while but after watching Byosoku 5 Centimeter yesterday, i decided to start this thread. what's the most, or what are some of the most dramatic/emotionally touching animes you've seen. it can be bittersweet, or almost to the point of being depressing. or it can be very cheerful and happy.

Haibane Renmei is definitely one. On being bittersweet, I completely agree with 5 Centimeters. XD I'd also put Honey & Clover in that category, and absolutely Full Moon wo Sagashite. XD

I agree, Haibane. Also, if you really want a sob factory leak, try Grave of the Fireflies. Guaranteed to sadden even the coldest heart.

"I Can Hear The Sea", one of Miyazaki's made-for-TV pieces, is one of my favorite dramas.
"Now and Then, Here and There" is a real emotional rollercoaster. Possibly my favorite Sci-Fi anime (the nearest competitor would be "Noein")
And my vote for the most emotionally satisfying ending would be either "Noir" or "Dennou Coil".

In the mecha genre, the oft overlooked Gundam 0080 is a bit of an introspective tearjerker.

Byosoku 5 Centimeter was a great movie that did make me very sad but like Radical Dreamer said you should also watch Honey and Clover. If you want the happy side only watch the first half of the two part season. If you want the life story watch the full thing.

Basilisk... so emotionally gripping. I sobbed and sobbed.
The story just sucks you in.

I also think that Saikano and Ayashi no Ceres are among the saddest and most depressing anime I've seen. But they're beautiful!

I would recommend Rumbling Hearts / Kimi ga Nozomu Eien -- however do beware of some sexual content. Great series, as long as you're not offended by some of the subject matter.

Gintama.

Nope, not kidding.

It occasionally becomes what it parodies (a shounen anime), but I've never seen it done so well. I don't think any anime has made me cry as hard as the end of the Itou arc did.

Alright, I'm definitely adding X/1999 to my list as well.
I have been left feeling so heartbroken and despressed... though oddly challenged to make my future what I want it to be!

"The future is not yet decided, is it?"

Giant Robo is basically a Hong Kong action opera with giant robots. Not all that emotionally touching, but dramatic yes yes yes.

More traditionally, Kaiba. Episode 3 is just, maann...

Most? Grave of the Fireflies... Short of Blood Diamond, this is the saddest movie I've seen... Other than that, I'm a huge crybaby... I cried in Sailormoon classic when
each of the sailors died one by one, then Mamoru died in Sailormoon's arms, and finally she used her memories of them and sacrificed her own life to beat Beryl. Of course, her dying wish was to live a normal life, so she comes back to life (but due to Toei being greedy corporate heartless monsters, she WASN'T able to live a normal life, and they created a fake continuation in the "Doom tree" arc, forcing the author to continue the story so they didn't keep ruining it)
I've cried in:

Nadesico
Haibane Renmei (especially the last couple episodes, I think that is legitimately sad, even if it's bittersweet)
Serial Experiments Lain...

Let's just face it, before I list nearly every anime I've ever watched, I've probably cried in about 3/4 of them... I'm just a crybaby... And for some reason, I like it. I've read Deathly Hallows about 5 times by now, crying from
Dobby's Death all the way to the end, with Fred and Colin and Snape and Lupin and Tonks, and eventually Harry's time in the Forest... I mean, I bawled when the locket horcrux was opened and tormenting Ron... I was hearing the embodiment of so much abuse and insecurity, and I identified with a lot of it, and what I didn't, it lets me see it from a different angle...
Haibane Renmei - The ending is especially emotional, but the whole series has this thinly-veiled emotion running all the way through it. The thing with Kuu is especially sad, and the voice acting in the climax is so powerful and heart-wrenchingly beautiful it makes me want to cry every time I watch that part.

Full Metal Alchemist - This anime is about half humor and light-hearted stuff, but the other half is so dramatic and painful it's made me cry many times. Highlights would probably be episodes 7, 25, the Lab 5 arc, and the ending. How much more dramatic and emotional can you get than, "I'll give you my leg...my arms...I'll even give you my heart. Just give him back! He's my brother!!!"

Jin-Roh: Wolf Brigade - Talk about an emotional ending! I find it ironic that a movie with such blank-faced, seemingly emotionless characters can make such an emotional story.

Samurai X - I'm still marveling at myself that I became emotionally tied up with this OVA even when the quality was so bad I couldn't read the subtitles and could hardly see what was going on. I suppose that is a tribute in itself to Samurai X.

Yeah, I shed a few tears after Noir too.

This post makes me happy. I finished the Deathly Hallows for the first time last night, and I kept crying at various parts.. Heck, I'm still depressed.. XD

YES...a lot of that series made me almost cry...especially the episode where
Henrietta (I think) befriends the boy at the hotel and then when she goes inside to do her job, he sees her and she (having been commanded to shoot anyone who sees her) shoots him.
That was the first episode of the series that my friend Darwin saw and he was like "Man, that was depressing."
Yeah, that would be
Rico
I'd have to say that the saddest episode for me was:
The one where Elsa kills Lauro and then herself.
Yeah, sad stuff.

There's a lot about Death Note that was touching to me...Like L with the Bells.
And Abenobashi (Magical Shopping Arcade) there was a lot to learn from that last ep. Not to mention the emotional roller coaster that is the current Naruto Manga.

I cannot stand Deathly Hallows because of that. And knowing it, not in the mood to read it either.
I have no problem killing off characters, but writing them out in excess with no real weight or reason to it is a pretty cheap writing gimmick.
I have some good friends who watched Death Note. Most of their favorite characters ended up dying, so it made them depressed. <=' |

I haven't watched all of the anime yet, but the last Yugioh! Millenium World manga was pretty sad to me.
