Moved to the Anime forum. As long as I'm here, I might as well...

1. Paprika -- Beautiful animation and an involving story. It's really a treat for the eyes.
2. Castle in the Sky -- A wonderful fantasy adventure that I absolutely fell in love with the first time I watched it.
3. 5 Centimeters Per Second -- Again, gorgeous animation and a bittersweet, heart-rending story.
4. Millennium Actress -- Creative storytelling, top-notch animation, and really neat take on cinema mirroring the life of the main character.
5. Whisper of the Heart -- A light-hearted and fanciful movie that I just really enjoyed. XD

Spirited Away - This was the first Japanese animated movie I ever watched. When first viewing this movie I didn't know what to expect since I'm not really a big cartoon person per-say now that has completely changed... but this Miyazaki flick blew me away. I loved the storytelling and how in-suspense I was when watching this film. It literally "spirited" my mind away.

The Cat Returns - Cat Baron!! I love the Vocal Cast Anne Hathaway, Cary Elwes, Tim Curry (Ahh! ^__^) did such a great job! The story was loveable and exciting. Whisper of the Heart was great as well but I liked The Cat Returns better.

Double Feature: XXXHolic: A Midsummer Night's Dream and Tsubasa Chronicle: Princess of the Birdcage Kingdom - I love both animes so why wouldn't I love their Double Features though Tsubasa Chronicle I didn't think I liked due to it's length (only 30 minutes) but after I watched each 3 more times I now love them with a passion!

Millennium Actress - I agree with you Radical Dreamer. That movie was without a doubt top-notch. I just wish I could find the soundtrack to buy somewhere.

My Beautiful Girl Mari - Another great movie where I can't buy the soundtrack any longer!

Junkers Come Here! - So cute. It warms the heart and makes me want a schnauzer!

And as an "honerable mention": Voices of a Distant Star was amazing though I think the manga summed the story up better. It should be sold as the companion guide with the movie.

This was THE best anime movie, in my opinion. I am such a Miyazaki fangirll...!

2.) HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE--
Same as above, AND it's based of the Diana Wynne Jones novel! Score!

3.) MONONOKE-HIME ((PRINCESS MONONOKE))--
This movie was just so unique!

4.) BLEACH: MEMORIES OF NOBODY--
Well, it's a BLEACH movie. What more can I say as a fan?

5.) LAPUTA--
Yet another Miyazaki movie!! >XD

Well, all of them are made by Miyazaki except the BLEACH one....it's so sad that Miyazaki's retiring after his next movie!!!! *cries*[/font]

1) Spirited Away- Miyazaki's best, in my eyes.

2) Beautiful Dreamer (Urusei Yatsura 2) - If it didn't depend heavily on the audience already knowing the characters and background story, it could have been one of the all-time best animes.

3) Paprika - Kon at his best.

4) Ghost in the Shell (The original movie.) - Although I liked the TV series, the movie that inspired it was much better.

5) Akira - Sentimental Favorite.

Honorable Mention: Galaxy Express 999.

At least two are from this decade! Maybe I'm starting to warm up to the new stuff more...

1. Howl's Moving Castle - My favorite Miyazaki movie. Beautiful animation, fairy-tale-like story, sweet romance...the epitome of Miyazaki.

2. Spirited Away - ^ See above.

3. Laputa: Castle in the Sky - ^ See above.

4. Jin-Roh: Wolf Brigade - The animation is amazing and realistic, the music is haunting and fitting, and the story is captivating and wonderfully tragic. Probably my favorite tragedy out of every medium a story can be in.

5. Samurai X (if that counts as a movie?) - Sweet, sad...great for backstories and what-happens-after stuff. Made me love the romances.

1. Spirited Away -The movie that basically brought my passion for anime to light.

2. Howl's Moving Castle -One of the best impulse purchases I've every made.

3. Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (Knocking on Heaven's Door)

5. Final Fantasy 7: AC -It has absolutely no plot... but it's so pretty.

1. Any Miyazaki movie. I can't decide which one because all of them are so good. But I do like Porco Rosso alot.

2. Any Lupin the III movie. Again, I can't decide. But Im leaning toward The Castle of Cagliostro.

Im sorry that I can't decide between which of the Miyazaki and Lupin movies I like best. Its just that they are all so good. And note: the ones I did put beside Miyazaki and Lupin are the ones I thought of directly, and doesn't necessarily mean they are my favorite ones.

1. Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust. What really got me hooked on anime. It's so gothic and excellent art... Visual feast IMO.
2. Cowboy Bebop The Movie. I think I liked it better than the actual series. But both were great.
3. Highlander: The Search for Vengeance. What? Ya it's not the greatest but once again, the art is excellent and as a Highlander movie, its easily one of the best.
4. Vampire Hunter D. Art isn't the best but its still a pretty awesome movie.
5. Akira. Amazing animation, nice background art. Surpasses anything Disney ever made at the time IMO.

Actually my all time favorite cartoon/anime is actually The Last Unicorn but I don't know if thats actually considered anime since it was an american production.

I am trying to keep from listing the obvious movies based on series like
Inuyasha and Lupin III and go for the non-series type:

Ohhh, here's a thread I can cofidently post in!! ^_^ I couldn't decide between Samurai X and Ghost in the Shell so I have a top six. This is pared down from the dozen or so that I LOVE, these are just my hands down faves...

6. Samurai X: Reflection -- I saw this shortly after I found out about Rurouni Kenshin and fell in love with the cuteness of the show... This movie made me look at Kenshin, Kaoru and the others in a totally different light. It also became a personal testament to the depth and devotion of love. <3

5. Ghost in the Shell -- I actually got to see this in a theater. We have a historic "Playhouse" theater here in Tampa that plays avant-garde movies, and they have had anime from time to time... So seeing Shirow's masterpiece on the big screen was such an amazing experience! Seeing Innocence all these years later was pretty awesome, too.

4. Macross II: Lovers Again -- Again, I saw this one at the Tampa Theatre... Watching Ishtar sing her beautiful song in full stereo sound on a movie screen was a moment I'll never forget... It still gives me chills... And I began to make connections between Macross and Robotech.
3. Macross: Do You Remember Love (dubbed as Macross in Clash of the Bionoids) -- I actually saw a horribly done dub of the original Macross movie fifteen years ago and it thrilled me because I had grown up with Robotech and loved the characters. I had a VHS copy that my mom had found in a thrift store and I watched it constantly. Once I grew up (and with the glorious invention of eBay) I bought a bootleg DVD of the original Japanese film. Though it was all the dub could never be, that old-school, badly-dubbed movie holds a place in my heart.

2. Vampire Hunter D. -- Love it. LOVE it. LOVE. IT!! I can't say it enough. I loved the flick so much that I plan on walking down the aisle in my wedding to the "Theme of D: Parting", that song at the end where the credits start rolling... The beauty, the cyberpunk/steampunk imagery... *D*... awesomeness personified. From Lamika to Doris to Magnus Lee and of course, D... just yes.

1. Akira -- It's not an exaggeration to say that this movie changed my life. I first saw it when I was maybe ten or so? Yeah. Try watching this movie at ten years old. I was fascinated and disturbed and completely mind blown all at once. I watched it three times the first day I had the tape (We're talking 1989 here, people... no DVD's back then...). I am pretty sure that this was the first anime movie I watched, although I had seen anime all my life in the form of Voltron, Robotech, Starblazers and the like... This put everything I had EVER seen up to that point to SHAME. Still ranks right at the top of my list of favorite anythings... Sheer genius.

These aren't in order, its just 5 of my favorites that I actually own, not necessarily my top 5.

My Neighbor Totoro: This was the first anime that I ever saw. My parents bought it for me when I was somewhere between 3-5. I loved this greatly at the time, but I havn't watched it in at least 10 years, probably more...I need to watch it again soon.

Akira:I finally saw it a year or two ago on tv, just managed to get my hands on a copy of it today.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Series of movies: When I say this I mean The 2 original movies and the first one in the new series of movies that just started coming out in japan.

Initial D: The Movie: Okay, for this one I dont mean the animated movie, I mean the live action one that was based on the anime. It didn't really stick to the story all that well, I'd say 50%, and I didn't care for the soundtrack compared to the anime soundtrack. Still, the race scenes in this were much better than the race scenes in Tokyo Drift or things like that. In fact, the racing looks very realistic in this, especially considering that they are drifting around hair-pin turns going 50 mph.

Cromartie High The movie: Okay, yet another live action movie based on an anime. This was actually well, the tone and feel of the anime comes across very well. The way they did mechazawa was very good( Hes a robot), I actually was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie.

#1 HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE - The greatest anime movie in HISTORY!!! (that I've seen) I just love the entire story beginning to end. ^^ so sweet and just...Yeah... *gets dreamy look on face*

#2 FINAL FANTASY VII: ADVENT CHILDREN - Blame Kadaj.<3.... lol I actually really like the storyline and having friends who know Final Fantasy VII inside and out doesn't hurt... I LOVE this movie even if everyone disses it. You have to at least admit the animation is... AMAZING.

#3 KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE - My very first anime movie. EVER. I just love the story.

#4 WHISPER OF THE HEART - Cute Story and I actually ended up getting really emotional with it.... which was weird because usually "slice of life" movies don't affect me. I usually find them boring. But this one is so sweet. ^^

#5 CASTLE IN THE SKY - Two Words. One Name. Hayao Miyazaki. The story is sweet as well.

PS - No offense to anyone but I didn't really think that Spirited Away was that great. It left me dissapointed. Everyone says it's "THE BEST" but I like other Miyazaki movies better. *shrugs* just my personal opinion.

I'm somewhat similar. I rather like Spirited Away, but I still like Howl's Moving Castle better. I like the setting and the heroine better in Howl.

Augh, I hate quoting back to old posts. anyway, Miyazaki is not retiring, I'm almost 100% sure. In a quote from an interview not that long ago: *"When I talked with Miyazaki's wife, she said, 'He'll make movies until he dies. He cannot live unless making a movie.'" Miyazaki actually retired at one point after directing Princess Mononoke. However, While on an extended vacation, Miyazaki spent time with the daughters of a friend, one of whom became his inspiration for Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, 2001) I think after that, he realized, whether or not it was with Ghibli, he wouldn't quit making movies until he HAD to stop. he doesn't work as hard as he used to, or produce animation at the speed he once went at so as not to become stressed. But either way, if Miyazaki "retires" which is unlikely, he'll probably continue to make movies at his side studio, and they will continue to be released through the Tokuma Shoten/Disney deal.

Hm, here's a quick list. I'm not really sure the exact placing of movies, except that Howl's Moving Castle is undoubtedly my favorite.

I can't decide which should get #2. While I love Nausicaa, the manga is even better. Grave of the Fireflies is also incredible, although hard to watch often.

And yes, most of them are Miyazaki/Ghibli, but I haven't seen many anime movies yet.

Being one of my first anime movies I had seen, Kimagure Orange Road still remains one of my all time favorites. The rest of my list is in no particular order- just animes I have really enjoyed in the past. I guess my list could change a little depending on the mood. ^_^
