Buying Anime

Postby Fantasy Dreamer » Sat Feb 23, 2008 9:15 pm

Anybody know of any sites that sells anime that isn't bootlegged and is trustworthy? I'm specifically looking to buy an imported anime that hasn't been dubbed, but I want it to be of good quality and have clear subs.

So if anybody can give me any trustworthy websites, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

(also, I know there have probably been a lot of threads like this in the past, but I searched and couldn't get any results due to 'too broad of keywords'. So, sorry if there are other threads that could have given me this information, but I couldn't find any.)

Amazon.com, Rightstuf.com, and DeepDiscount.com are all good places to start. If you're looking for imports, I'm not as familiar with buying those, but I hear amazon.jp is a good site for that.

That's kind of a tedious demand as the subs vs. dubs matter goes. In this age of DVDs almost all Anime is sold with two seperate audio tracks, one with the original Japanese audio track on which subs are available, and another with the dub. And then there's those obnoxious issues with DVD regional coding. You could just as easily do what you want to with Anime liscensed to America and you would typically get a good quality product that meets your demands.

Imported anime, but you will need a region-free DVD player to play the dvd on.

Also, imported Japanese DVDs are NOT going to have English subtitles. Just so you know. Unless you meant Japanese subtitles, but...

Ebay and Amazon are good places as long as you know how to spot bootlegs. Bestbuy.com also has sales sometimes.

I know a few online anime stores like,store.animearigato.com,discountanimedvd.com and shopanimedvd.com that sells domestic and region free import dvds with english subtitles.so, don't worry about buying a region free dvd player and these dvds are completly legal.

I have used Right Stuf for years and I have been happy with them. They do offer a couple of perks worth considerating:

Most tiles are listed at 10% off of retail price.

If you order 2 months in advance of the release date for a DVD, the retail price is cut by 20% instead of 10%.

Frequent sales that offer from 20% to 40% off retail price on selected titles (usually by manufacturer).

If you join their Got Anime membership club ($12 per year, I believe) you get access to coupons and an additional 10% off of most prices - including most sale prices.

If you buy anime frequently - like 1-2 DVD's per month on average, then Right Stuf can save you a good deal of money.

YesAsia.com sells certain English titles as well as Japanese titles with English subs. I have ordered from their site before and they are very reliable. ^__^ They sell alot of different titles though, most are marked 'English Subtitled' and some aren't. You just have to check in the inforamtion about the product page. Nothing on YesAsia.com is bootleg. :D

All three of those sites carry a plethora of illegal bootlegs.

What about Anime First DVD? It's a Yahoo marketplace store that I bought a Dragonball DVD from. Looked legit when I bought it, but when it arrived (judging from the unedited content and packaging), I'm not sure if it is or not. No Chinese subtitles, regular English dub and Japanese audio. Regular subtitles. Not sure. What do you guys think?

You are talking about this place right?

If so, all dvds are bootlegs and have region free on them.

As far as I know, region free DVDs are all illegal bootlegs.

Oops...should I try to return it? I didn't know "region-free" meant bootleg. I thought I just had to watch out for Chinese subtitles.

Dang. This is the 2nd thing that I've bought online that turned out to be bootleg. The 1st was the LOTR series I bought on Ebay.
I feel so uneducated. They got me.

Not all region-free are necessarily bootleg, but it's the most prominent indicator other than Chinese subs.

Some bootlegs I've seen are remarkably professional looking, and it's easy to see how people get duped at times.

Yeah, I meant the site is sealing bootlegs. I went and look at other sites that tell you who the manufacturer is and most of them were MI or MAC and they were the same ones that Anime First DVD were selling. The thing is, Anime First DVD doesn't list manufacturer and just says all region-free on them. You just have to really read the fine print and I wouldn't buy from any place that will not list the manufacturer.

MI and MAC make bootlegs.

Thanks for the links so far. Can anybody tell me how to tell a bootleg from the real thing? Any tips would be appreciated.

I use RightStuf and Amazon. On Amazon, be wary of sellers who have a boxset for $20 or less. Those are usually boots.
