Lamperouge means "The red lampshade" in French.

That made me laugh.
And I guess he doesn't wear a red lampshade, does he?

Shame it won't save the inane plot probably, though Johnny might make Lelouche more bearable.

It sounds like it will be an overall fun series.

Anyone have strong opinions on this? I just watched the first episode... the CLAMP 12-head-tall character designs and the fairly typical plot and the general bad dialogue inherent to the genre kind of make me cringe, BUT! At the same time, from first impressions, it does seem a bit different from typical mecha fare... I'm trying to decide whether to continue watching, given that I generally don't like giant robot anime beyond casually catching an occasional episode of Gundam. Is it all laserbangbang and prettyboyangst, or does it... get to be more?
Given that someone on LJ compared Lelouch to Yagami Light, I AM curious. At any rate, Lelouch the Red Lampshade? That's got to be the sexiest name ever; I would almost sit through 26 episodes plus a second season just for that.

The only thing I can't stand more than Code Geass is the Code Geass fandom.
That's the short answer.

Well, it is pretty popular. It won a bunch of awards and tied with Haruhi and Death Note for last year's Tokyo Anime awards in the Best TV Show category.
But, all that aside, I found it a generally fun series. Lelouch does bear some similarities to Light Yagami but he isn't nearly the raging sociopath Light is (as he still has some morals, albeit a strong ends justify the means philosophy) although he get increasingly unhinged at certain points later in the series.
Code Geass' writing isn't as good as Death Note's(at least DN's first part anyway) but it's probably above average or so...I guess.
I wouldn't really consider it a straight mecha show, as it never really focuses heavily on the mechs. It has a lot of action, but does tend to concentrate more on the characters and their situations. It does require a suspension of disbelief at points. And a couple of things are rather silly(blatant Pizza Hut product placement...)
Would I recommend it to you? From what I've understood of your tastes, I'm not sure. If you really don't like things like angst, you might not like this as it has some (especially later on), but at the same time, a lot of people who don't generally like mecha titles seem to like this series.
A slight note: For anyone wondering about content, this series does have fanservice and brief nudity in a few of the episodes.

While I haven't spent a lot of time around it, the CG fandom is really that bad?
I don't know. I never got the same impression of its fandom as say, Naruto or Bleach.

(I love Pizza Hut ads. That's basically what made me stick with Darker than Black until it actually got good-- "Let's see how many we can spot in THIS episode!!")
Given your comments, MasterDias, I think I'll give it a chance and check it out a bit more. I'm glad it's not straight-up mecha-- I hate prolonged fight scenes-- so character drama is good, even if it is silly angst. (And anything that ties with Haruhi AND Death Note deserves a second chance, I guess.)

What bothered me most was the rampant anglo-phobia, bordering on racism that is prevalent throughout the show. I figured that I could blow it off after hearing about it from a review, but it really becomes grating after a while.

Umm.. don't forget the YURI.
Oh and the violence?
And be very careful with the bonus episodes if you get a chance to see those. They basically kind of made mini episodes using storyboards and the characters talking, but a few of them have LOT of nudity. A LOT.
Then the whole questionable religious thing this show has going on. And I don't really know how to explain it more without ruining the show.
It will be interesting to see where the 2nd season goes as it will be in a more "family friendly" time slot this time. They might cut out some of the nudity but the religious thing could easly get way out of hand.
So I guess I just want to say "Be careful" if you decide to watch this show. I really love the character designs, and the animation is some of the best I've seen lately. The basic plot is pretty darn cool and shows more originality so far then lots of the shows coming out lately. I like it but there is enough objectionable content to keep it off my list of top favorites.

When you say yuri, how strong is it? Is it like, girls blushing with each other, or like magical kisses, or is it really explicit "I love you forever, no man can take your place in my heart!!"?
Also, is the violence level like, atypical of normal giant robot shows?
(Because, for exampl, Host Club has pseudo-yaoi content, but I'm guessing you have little problem with it ^^)

Yuri is probably a slightly extreme word to describe it(If MyrrhLynn is talking about what I think she's talking about.), but this does deserve mentioning. It concerns a minor female character who develops an extreme (but unrealized and unrequited) crush on a major female character after the latter character stands up for her. It's mostly irrelevant to anything, but it does include a scene that really made me think the show's creators were really trying to push content restrictions...
As for violence, there's no gore or anything, from what remember. But there is some blood, and people getting gunned down and such. It's been awhile since I've watched most of it, so I can't really be more specific.
But, this does get a general warning from me, and would probably get at least a 16+ age rating on CAA's review database.
Then the whole questionable religious thing this show has going on. And I don't really know how to explain it more without ruining the show.
Questionable religious thing? Could you be more specific and put it in spoiler tags or send me a PM? Because, off the top of my head, I don't know what you mean.

I have heard some criticism similar to this elsewhere. But, it never really struck me as being too much more than a "What if the American Revolution failed, and Britain controlled most of the world with heavy-handed imperialistic attitudes?" scenario. It wasn't really that flattering on the Japanese nationalists either as they tended to be largely helpless without Lelouch(ironically, a Britannian himself and using the Japanese for his own personal vendetta).

It wouldn't actually bother me so much if it wasn't as clumsily handled. Every time they have the "elevens are Japanese!" thing its usually head to desk clumsy, story-wise, as if they have a quota of racial incidents to add to the story. I think the show could go on just as well with it handled in a way thats not as clunky. It just seems to be a personal vendetta expressed by the authors or something. It grates because it is poorly integrated and executed.

Well, I've sat through 4 eps of this show. It's absolutely ridiculous; the dialogue stinks, the plot is contrived, and too much of it is like a front to get pretty boys to do pretty angsty things.
Which is why I think I'm going to sit through another 20+. I'm surprised that I found it pretty entertaining so far; it's like a B action movie.

Lol, I need to come here more often. xD
So okay for the yuri there is one scene that almost made me quit watching the show. Ahh... so yeah I don't really know how to say it in a nice way so I'll just say it. And I'm not going to put a spoiler on it because seriously people should know about this scene if they are gonna watch the show:
There is one scene where a semi-main character is shown masturbating while she looks at a photo of one of the other semi-main female characters. And they make it very clear what she is doing not a "oh she might be doing that" sort of scene.
As for the violence there is blood in every episode but I guess it's about on par with most other gundam-ish shows.
For the religious thing the whole "Geass" source of power is what I was talking about. And the many flashbacks that (what is the green haird girl's name? it's like 2 letters long!) plus the scenes in the last episode from season 1 that aired over the summer lead me to think that there is a cult or religion thing that is going to play into this somehow. So far it doesn't seem related to Christianity at all, but with CLAMP who knows where they will take it.

When I first saw this thread, I was about to say that someone already posted this and then I saw that this thread was bump.
I will say one thing about the cast. You can have the greatest sub/dub cast in an anime, but it will not save it, when the anime has a bad plot and storyline in it.

Haha, to respond to a month-old post....
Saw That ep. Right, so I was EXTREEEEEEMELY shelted growing up, so I didn't get it at all >_>;
Eh, Code Geass is basically Gundam Seed drawn by CLAMP with a watered-down version of Yagami Light as the main character. This will sound terrible, but I actually like this show, against my better judgment. It's poor written and insanely contrived, but it's entertaining and MELODRAMATIC. Pure pulp fiction. It's the kind of series I'd recommend only to those people that don't overanalyze anime and spend long hours in their basements writing long essays on its literary merits.

I've seen about half of the first season so far, at the behest of my friends who are major fans. So far, I'm really enjoying it, though I don't think it makes use of its good ideas as well as it could. Without the comic relief/fanscervice concessions, it could be GREAT.
