What kinds of fans scare you the most?

Postby minakichan » Fri Dec 07, 2007 7:18 pm

So I was browsing the Serebii.net forums (yes, I AM a Pokemon fan), and I came across this little 100+ page topic:

"Is anyone here who's [sic] sexually attracted to a pokemon?"

The answer was yes, apparently.

So I'm curious: what kinds of anime fans scare the pants off of you the most? I'm turning this into a poll and will add more options as people suggest them, because there's no way I know all the frightening truths of this world.

Examples:
Yaoi/ Yuri
Lolicon/ Shoutacon
General Hentai
Otherkin/ Otakukin
Author-insertion Mary Sues/ Gary Stus
Guts Fetish
I am too progressive and open-minded to discriminate against any group of people.

EDIT :: Puh, I was too slow posting the poll. I guess just discuss then.

- Yaoi fangirls who live for subtext.
- Really, yaoi fangirls in general.
- Fans who think it's OK to jump and scream and act even more childish than a real child would.
- Fangirls who hate a girl character just because she's a girl. (Good lord, the bloodlust...DX)
- Fans who have no decency or self-respect. (Ha ha, wide fiel.)
- Fans who think Japan is THE best country in the whole wide world and that as soon as they get there, Japanese people will treat them like they are gods.

This is kind of meshing into also fans that I dislike, but they scare me too, in the sense that I would not want to be in a room with them for fear they might destroy.

Yeah, I totally HATE yuri fanboys and yaoi fangirls. Keep your obsession elsewhere other than A-Kon.

Also, lolicon is just...weird. 0_o And those big, sweaty dudes who are so moe-obsessed, they even COSPLAY as girl characters. Ugh...gross.

I've never really understood this obsession some women/girls have with yaoi. Doesn't make any particular sense to me.

- Fans who think Japan is THE best country in the whole wide world and that as soon as they get there, Japanese people will treat them like they are gods.

Never understood this one either. Sure, anime/manga/video games are cool and Japanese culture is interesting, but that's no reason to get all worked up about it.
Although, admittedly, I know much more about Japan than I do some other countries. Comes with the hobby, I guess.

Haha, I forgot about the Wapanese! There's one girl in my college anime club who I have never heard utter a word that was not generic anime fangirl Japanese (including anime girl "sounds" like "Uehhhh?"), or in a voice that was not at least an octave and a half above normal conversation. FRIGHTENING.

There ARE girls who like yuri though. I know one (she scares me sometimes) who ONLY likes yuri and absolutely despises yaoi, and I don't believe she's lesbian. Guys who like yaoi and are straight probably don't exist though -_-;

I am scared of all of these...but to add to the list:
- Japanese Audio Purists- The fans who are really picky about only watching the SUBS. Because the dubbers are somehow totally against their show and want to ruin it. (English VAs are ACTORS not Imitators!)

Haha, *raises hand* Rawr! Nah, I'm reasonable. Ghibli dubs are great, often even better than the original, as are the general in-theater anime films. (Christian Bale! Billy Crystal! *_*)

Actually, I think that if you've ever seen a CHINESE anime dub, you would have a strong opinion. That CAN'T be called acting.

Oh yes, the "Pokemon are hot" thread...I've...seen that. I'm not going to judge them, but...ya. I just find it strange how people look at certain pokemon and say they're hot. How?

It's one thing to say Piccolo from Dragon Ball is attractive or Minerva Mink from Animaniacs is attractive. I mean...they are drawn like humans! To be attracted to a shape that God intended you be attracted to? Nothing wrong with that. To look at Rokon (Vulpix) and say you wanna sex it up though?

*shakes head* And otherwise, I totally agree with the obsessive yaoi and yuri fans. I don't run in the street yelling about my couples, why must they need to? Also treating Japan like the best thing, or being generally inappropriate in how they act (and I don't mean perverted, I mean being rude!)...blah.

I understand when fans are loud about what they love, in fact...to some extent you should be. Japanese fans seem so scared to death of the public. They act like they should curl up and die just because everyone thinks they're weird for liking a young child's anime or something. Why? There's nothing morally wrong with it. It's silly to hide something that's not even evil...

To be outright rude and almost mean because you want people to know you love it? That's wrong too. People need to find a nice medium. ._.

so I herd u liek mudkipz? (And Piccolo? SO not attractive.)

Honestly, I see the Pokemon attraction thing more as kids who don't even understand sexuality trying to look "unique" and "liberal-minded" and "don't make fun of me just because my way of thinking is more progressive and therefore superior to yours!" than people who are honestly into bestiality. But there ARE some beasty-Pokemoners (i.e. Pokemon hentai DOES exist).

Well I like Piccolo, so he was the first male who came to mind. XD

But as for "wanting to look liberal-minded"? I have to agree. Some of those members are so young, I think they just find the pokemon awesome to look at, but then are perverted by the really nasty ones. I know there was someone who talked about wanting to "train" their pokemon and all this sick stuff...a person like that actually means it and that's where it's just sad...

I hate Kingdom Hearts fantards too. Sora isn't gay. In fact, as far as I know, there is no gayness. Any gayness would probably found from the Disney side!

BEST QUOTE EVAR.

Honestly, I'm a bit more disturbed that ladies write their yaoi porno fic/doujin about TWELVE YEAR OLD BOYS getting it on than just the fact that they make Sora gay. The stuff the ladies make him do with Riku or whatever would still be pretty disturbing if done with Kairi.

How interesting that I found this thread. XD

1. People who call themselves "Otaku". It's kinda annoying.
2. Wapanese/Japanophiles/Asian-Wannabes. People who obsess too much with asian snacks, cuisine, culture, etc bug me. I could go great lengths as to why I have a sense of dislike towards these types of people, but I don't feel like it.

But nowadays I just let them do their own thing. I don't find it a good idea to let yourself get so irritated by other people's habits and fandoms so I just don't let it get to me anymore.

The annoying fangirls are the reason I will probably never go to an anime convention again. Being around all those screaming people for 3 days was awful.

 Love that!

I'm not sure that any kind of fan scares me, per se; they just annoy me like no tomorrow. Types of fans that annoy me:

Yaoi/Yuri
Mary Sues/Self-inserts
Worshipers of voice actors (or any other celebrity, for that matter)
Those who are excessively obsessed with Japanese language, culture, going to Japan, eating with chopsticks, etc.

Now, this is not to say that I detest anyone who's interested in Japan. I think Japanese culture is very interesting and cool, and I would like to go to Japan someday if possible - as much for the beautiful countryside as anything else. I like Japanese food, not because it makes me cool to eat it, but because it tastes good. I want to learn Japanese, not because I'm some otaku who wants to lord it over the masses, but because I think Japanese is a beautiful language. However, when fans take it too far and devolve into unintelligent squealing...that just annoys me.

And can you honestly say that you've never at least been tempted to say things like, "Nani?" or "Gomenasai!" after watching an anime episode? Face it, Japanese just sounds that much cooler than English :hits_self

I don't mind people who will NEVER watch a dubbed anime. I'm rather inclined to agree with them; most dubs are atrociously horrible. But that's not to say that there aren't a few diamonds in the rough out there - Disney in particular. I agree that the Disney dubs of Miyazaki's movies are better than the original Japanese. And occasionally, the dubs will add some jokes that weren't in the original, or put things in a way that makes the meaning clearer. There's been a few times when I watched the dub, and I finally understood what the characters were getting at.
You can find out things about the past that you never knew. And from what you've learned, you may see some things differently in the present. You're the one that changes. Not the past.

You haven't beaten Kingdom Hearts II yet, huh?

In a later level Sora meets Riku and Kairi he freaking runs to Riku and hugs him and cries about how he searched EVERYWHERE for Riku and whatnot. He pretty much COMPLETELY ignores Kairi.

I won't spoil the ending, but let's just say, the ending is pretty heavy yaoi fodder. Fangirls LOVED it.
Guys who like yaoi and are straight probably don't exist though -_-]
ACTUALLY. I HAVE heard of some that exist, but I don't know if I buy it. They're probably gay but are just trying to hide it.

As far as why yaoi is more popular than yuri, I believe I shall have to quote my good friend, Cap'n Nick on this.

"But really, for some reason it's socially acceptable and even laudable for young girls to like gay pr0n, but fat male otakus watching lesbians is still exactly as creepy and unappealing as it sounds."

As far as being attracted to Pokemon though, I'd be willing to bet a lot of those people are furries. And well...since I'd rather not offend anyone on the site, I will just keep my mouth shut about furries. >.>;;
Heck, half the things people write about would get someone ARRESTED :/

If they performed it in real life yeah, but I'm pretty sure writing falls under "Freedom of speech" and therefore the government kind of can't arrest someone for writing it.

I haven't beaten the first Kingdom Hearts.

Ok, so the KH2 ending was a little, well... But it still doesn't absolutely confirm anything! (Well, it confirms that VG Cats comic...)

And the whole Organization XIII isn't gay either.

IT'S JAPANESE THEREFORE IT'S COOL!

Uh... that's a fake-gold plated turd...

As I got older I learned to not let the annoying people at cons destroy my experience.

In all honesty, I believe, the reason most fangirls go so nuts at cons is because they finally get out from under the thumb of their parents (how many parents actually stay for these things?) and can do what they want, henceforth go insane and do stuff they normally would not do in everyday life. Its like a mini version of the wildosity that goes on with freshmen at college (and yes I just made that up).

Yaoi fangirls get my vote for the most frightening of the fandoms, mainly because they show no self restraint. From hitting people to paddles to screaming their heads off, glomping and asking people to yaoi for them. They just are plain annoying.

edit

And someone mentioned the way people go nuts over the va's. Ever been to a rock concert or an after party? Same deal they will put a person on a pedestel to the point that they go nuts when they can actually meet and touch them. And thus we get anime groupies in a sense......

(And when you're learning Japanese, or any language for that matter, it's *really* hard to at least not say a few words in it without realizing. I mean, people say when you think in that language, you're fluent in it. Well, if you're thinking in it, it's hard not to say it.)

(Now, that said, those... people who insert a Japanese word for the sake of sounding cool annoy me. Very much. As I said to Debitt, the general rule is make sure the words you're using is part of the language of the conversation. It's one thing if it's reflex, another if you're just trying to sound cool.)

There were these girls in anime club last year and when I told them that I didn't like yaoi, they looked at me like I had just killed a litter of puppies.

The next time I get a yaoi manga shoved in my face, I know I'll be tempted to rip it up.

Besides yaoi fangirls, elite fans annoy me, too. Yes, I'm a fan of Naruto, but if someone gets the name of a jutsu wrong, I'm not gonna be like, "u fail @ lyfe11!1 ur stupid thats not teh name!1." But what annoys me the most about Naruto fans is, "what?!!? SASUKE IS THE BEST CHARACTER EVER! SHUT UP!"

Yes, the childish fans annoy me, too. They're the reason why my school's anime club has a bad reputation (though it's a lot better this year).
--act your age, not your shoe size!!

Quoted for the truth, XD.

I've never met any fans who treat anime like a religion, but the idea itself is scary. o.o I do know this one girl who relates everything in her life to anime or manga; that's basically all she ever talks about. It's a little weird, honestly.

Oh yeah, throwing in random Japanese words to sound "cool" is *extremely* annoying. "lol thats soooo kawaii!"

I think everyone goes through a rabid fan stage, though. I did, but I grew out of it. Maybe most of these fans will grow out of it as well?

Sometimes I drop a Japanese word in conversation. I do the same with Chinese and French. It's usually reflex, and I don't see a problem with that.

Yeah, so many female yaoi fans act under the assumption that if you're a girl who likes anime, you MUST be a yaoi fan. Pretty much every person in such a category believes that. While it might not be a huge stretch, considering that SO MANY FEMALE FANS ARE YAOI ADDICTS, that's still pretty lame.

And concerning Otakukin (I love talking about them, I swear): They don't really "treat anime like a religion," but it's close enough. Otakukin believe that anime and manga creators, when writing their stories, unconsciously tap their minds into an alternate universe in which these stories are real. They also believe that they (the Otakukin) themselves are the reincarnations of anime characters who lived in that alternate universe, and they are "trapped in normal human bodies." They say that they received an "awakening" when they saw the anime for the first time and realized their true identities, and they "dream about their past lives." They refer to people who are NOT Otakukin (and therefore do not understand their plight) as the "Mundane." Also, sometimes they will say that the original anime or manga "got it wrong," i.e. "In episode 39847 of Inuyasha, X happened, but it really should have been Y, and Takahashi got it wrong, and I KNOW because I'M INUYASHA and I WAS THERE." I am not kidding. If you laugh at them, they call you "narrow minded" and "oppressing my religion."

The non-anime counterpart is the Otherkin, who believes that s/he is a fox, fairy, dragon, sorcerer, etc. trapped in a human body. They always take pains to point out that they "are not human."
